Hi and welcome to ExTS I am sorry for the slow reply - I am on holiday at the moment. please take a look here - click here It is a rather complex process and I advise that you print out the advice that Brink has posted and read it through a couple of times. He is a Micro-soft MVP - so his advice is very reliable. If you find the above too complex then try a System Restore - click here Files - photos etc should be OK. You would need to be able to get to the Advanced Boot Options at startup. -
Laptop says 'Limited Connection'
KenB replied to Slumdog's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Slumdog I am away from home at the moment - but wifi seems ok for the moment. I had a similar problem last year and the year before on a caravan site - the same site. I couldn't get wireless internet access even if I stood next to the router. Others on the site had no problem. This year ( same site ) I have no problem at all. Why? The owners have installed a new router. I am using this connection at the moment. I doubt that the problem lies with your machine. Sometimes routers create problems that there is no logical answer to. Hopefully the guest house may have bought a new router and your problem may be solved. If not - ask them to switch it off - at night when nobody will be using it - leave it for an hour or so. The router needs to be off for a long time for the ISP to re-allocate the IP Address. The ISP will allocate a new IP Address when it is switched on again. This may solve your problem if it is IP Address related. -

Where do I install Windows 8?
KenB replied to Ladybird87's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to ExTS Take a look here and see if this points you in the right direction. click here This is a Win 7 forum - but i will be relevant for Win 8 Get back to us and let us know how you get on. [ I am away from home at the moment and internet connection is not good :( ] -
Hi H20, This is nothing but a glorified Registry Cleaner. Stay well clear !! This, and other Registry Cleaners, will do absolutely nothing to speed up your system. The registry is the heart of your operating system and I, for one, would not trust ANY software to delete keys from it. Redundant entries in the registry are simply that - redundant and not used. They do not slow down the system. I have not read any report that says differently. If your system is slow there are a number of things that you can do. 1. Scan for malware. We recommend Malwarebytes. [ the free version ] 2. Run Disk Cleanup. This is a Microsoft facility and is part of the operating system. 3. Check what is running at startup. 4. Make sure that your hard drive is not full. Windows needs at least 10% free disk space to operate efficiently Hope this answers your question :)

Hi Strange that they didn't know what you were talking about when you phoned them. Is this a reputable outlet ? It looks as if your OS is now activated. All's well that ends well :) -
It looks like the scanner part has died Jim :(
-
Hi Jim I moved your other post to this thread as it adds a little more information. [ see post #9 ] I assume that you tried the scanner on your wife's computer ?

That is very odd ???? Let us know how you get on with the install :) -
Hi Jim - keep the thread here please - it is easier :) [ I will delete the other post ] I would try it on your wife's machine. If, after installing the up-to-date drivers it still will not scan then it looks like the scanner function has died :(
-
Hi Jim Not sure why the board software censored the word - software - this is odd as it obviously isn't on the list of naughty words. Re your printer problem: Did you uninstall the original drivers before you tried the new ones ? Do you have another machine that you can try the printer on ? ============ The 0x8000ffff error is common when using system restore. It is something to do with file conflicts. If you want to try it again try it in Administrator Mode. Start > type in ....system restore .... right click on system restore in the left panel > run as administrator. [ assuming Win 7 ]

Hi I would leave the re-install as a last resort. Try this: 1. Press Windows key + X then clickRun, then type: slui.exe 4 .......[ there is a space before the 4 ] 2. Next press the 'ENTER' key 3. Select your 'Country' from the list. 4. Choose the 'Phone Activation' option. If it doesn't activate from here go through the above process again and do the following .... 5. Stay on the phone (do not select/press any options) and wait for a person to help you with activation. You will need the Product Code that you wrote down - have the new one to hand also just in case the first one doesn't work. -

Hi Try .....Windows Key + S Type in ......system .....click on the "System" box Bottom right corner is an option to "Change Product Key" .....click on this [ you may need to scroll down the page ] Type in the key ........don't type the hyphens. Hopefully this will sort it for you. -
You could give the suppliers a ring re warranty - see what they say.

Sorry Kev - I thought you were building it yourself :) There is a review of the CS650M here - click here It gets a good writ-up. [ There were 4 other pages - I just posted a link to the interesting bit ] If it were me I would go for this one and save a few pounds :) Remember - individuals who post a review are usually ones who have something to complain about. The happy customers tend to stay silent.

Why do you need to buy that particular PSU? Can't you get one from another supplier ?
-
Hi Kev The minimum recommended PSU for your Graphics Card [ GTX 960 ] is 400 Watts. I would recommend that you get a 500 Watt PSU. ( or bigger if you wish ) PSUs - even the better makes - are notoriously inefficient. So a poor quality one may only supply 80% or less of what it says on the label. The better makes are more efficient - but never 100% :) Quality makes: OCZ - Corsair - Seasonic - Thermaltake - Antec ......( in no particular order )

Hi Nev is correct. There is no sticker on Win 8 / 8.1 systems to let you know what the Product Code is. It is embedded into the BIOS on installation. Activation should be automatic when the OS is installed. You should be able to locate the product Key with this piece of software click here You will need to scroll down to "Feedback" for the link to download. I have just downloaded the zip option - it is fairly straight-forward to extract it and run the software. Once you have un-zipped it click on the ProduKey .........Application to show the 25 character product key. DO NOT post this here. Let me know when you have it. ( obviously make a note of this ...pay attention to zeros / noughts ) -

Hi Jontye, You may be in luck: Give this a try. It should analyse your RAM for you. I know it is a basic analysis - but if there is a definite problem it should highlight it. Let me know how it goes :) -

KenB replied to jontye's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Jontye If it said this then you drive would appear to be OK. I am not now convinced that your drive is the problem. This may be worth looking at after my next suggestion. We took the RAM out earlier and tried them one at a time. It could be that they are both faulty. When you saw the "Repair your Computer" .....was there an option to test hardware ....RAM specifically ? -

Hi again Sounds like a legitimate package. Is there a 25 character Product Code with it ? This should be on / in the box that the DVD came in. [ Do not write the code in your reply ....you need to keep this to yourself :) ] If there is a Product Code you are good to go with a reinstall if you want to take this route. We can advise with this if you wish. Just a bit confused over the message you got. Is this what you got? If you can still boot up ....... do the following: Hold the Windows Key down ( left side bottom row ) and press S Type in .... system ..... click on the "System" box. Right at the bottom it will tell you if Windows has been activated or not. Has it ? If you cannot boot up - do you get an option to enter the product code ? If so - you could try the one from the new package. -

Hi Jontye From what I have read - the log is actually saved onto the RAM and not in Windows itself. I assume that you typed in dir.log [ and other combinations ] immediately after completion of the test - without re-booting ? There is a DOS guide here - click here
