8 out of 10 updates from windows update fail at 15% I've tried the fix it program, it said nothing was wrong. I've tried doing them one at a time (takes ages) doesn't work very often. I've tried leaving the one update going for a whole night just to see what would happen. Nothing changed. My computer is 64 bit running win7 home premium sp1 and it downloads the updates easily and problems don't start until you've restarted the computer sits there trying to configure and fails. Microsoft Security Essentials found DOS/ALUREON.J on my Windows XP Home Edition computer. It partially removed it, but left remnants, and I am unable to remove them; the computer is still logey and temperamental. I found a page (and have now lost it) explaining an intricate way to start removing the trojan remnants on windows 7, and it said to click on a line for Windows XP instructions, but the link was not functioning. I have since been unable to find the page again. Until yesterday, I had Avast (free) antivirus, and yesterday I switched to AVG (free) because fore weeks the computer got increasingly slower, causing me to reboot a couple of times a day. MSE found the trojan today. I have not changed any settings since then. I use both IE8 and Chrome Version 26.0.1410.64 m. Please...I am desperate....what are the steps I should take? (Warning: I am 75 and no computer genius. ) View this thread

I had to restore my computer to factory condition. WIN7 SP1 done @ 6 this morning. Everytime I restart, there are a TON of updates still to do. Been doing this ALL day. Is there a way to just get the latest update & not have to do 246 like I did the 1st time. Then it was 36 updates, then 24, it goes on & on. I've been at it for 9 hours...Anyone? Anyone? Please help. The install looked like it went well and it goes to the first page defining personal settings. After that the screen goes blank and the machine locks up. The only way out of it is to power down and re-boot. When re-booting it comes all the way up until it is time to display the desktop and the same thing happens. I have installed Win 7 and UBUNTU and they work fine. It is just Win 8 that craps out. I would like to install an updated driver for Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS but how do you do that without a screen. This machine is an HP IQ506 with 4G of Ram, 500G HD and a core 2 Duo T5850 chip. Im about ready to trash can 8 and go to UBUNTU. View this thread

Last night was running malware removal - several bad files detected, but computer unplugged before I could complete scan. Tried again today with Microsoft malware removal, but now after I advance from "safe-mode/networking" I can't get to clean desktop - I get dark screen, in corners it says "safe mode", but it also displays a small image of a virus (one of those "FBI - pay me" things) I can't click on anything. Ay options at this point? I'm open on "advanced boot options page." View this thread

Hello, Have variety of issues that I'm looking for assistance with, please. Firstly, I have Windows XP Home SP3, previously used MS Works and then added MS OFFICE 2003 and now have the Student Edition of MS OFFICE 2010. I don't have MS OFFICE 2007, nor OneNote nor VISIO in the suite nor as stand-alones but do have those pesky updates. Although at one time I think I accepted OneNote but removed it but that I'm not sure as that could have simply been on a flash drive with U3. Doesn't MS automatic updates check the binaries of various editions of the suites or stand-alones before the auto updates select which updates should be downloaded for a particular system? When I get my update notification, the list doesn't provide the same description that I'll see in the Update History list which will then show which applications the update KB applies to. After I get the notification and before download/installing I click on the MS link to see more info about the update BUT it doesn't show the application name as it will in Update History, so that's useless to refer to for lay people. As mentioned, I don't have the above mentioned features/applications BUT do have the unneeded updates. Can I safely remove these and HOW do I get MS to provide only pertinent updates for particular editions of applications that they market but seem to just update based on the general title of a application or suite AND provide the same application's name and applicability information that the Update History will show but doesn't show it upfront when the update is being offered. Additionally, I also want to remove MS OFFICE 2007 installed updates as well as MS C++ 2005 Visual Studio 2005 installed updates for which I've never had these applications installed. I guess I would have to ask if the C++ updates would affect other applications in MS Office 2010 such as Excel, etc, but if not, I really don't want these unneeded updates removed and for MS to do a better job of distinguishing what updates to offer up and what app's they apply to in the initial updates are ready to download descriptions. It appears that MS just wants to disguise the fact that they have to update their products so frequently due to poor software quality development and testing since hackers can easily find and exploit what obviously shouldn't have been released until MS had bullet proofed the software. Imagine how much better MS and our lives would be if they spent the time/money to prevent the expenditure of resources to have to have this overblown system of updates and tech support for fixing their poorly tested products. They wouldn't have to worry about people looking for open standards software of O/Ss and applications or even Google if only MS had put the design and quality up front and center as opposed to rushing along and now can't do anything with quality and endless fixes and updates. Thanks for any info and guidance. View this thread

MSSE found 2 copies of this Trojan on my computer. I told the program to remove it. Should I consider it thoroughly removed or do I need to do anything else? Thank you. View this thread

After Windows Update installed 9 important updates on my Windows 7 machine today, it needed to restart, so I clicked "Restart" to do. Shortly after, received the message "Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete." For the last 90 minutes the same message is on screen, and some occasional DISK light activity. (I can't believe it's taking this long to reboot.)I'm afraid to turn the machine off and restart without talking to someone who might know better first. Is it OK to force a restart, or should I be doing/looking elsewhere for answers first? I don't want to cause more problems than necessary. I'd love to talk to a tech, but finding a number is impossible.Thank you for your help! View this thread

I ran a Full scan last nite at 11::30 pm and it is the next day at 2:21 and it stuck on system 3. It won't let me cancel the scan. I do not have an error number or anything saying something is wrong. How do I fix this problem. I also have Avira on my computer too. Do I need to delete that for this program to run correctly Thanks Therese View this thread
