I am having an issue with Storage Spaces in Windows 8 Pro. I have a few internal and a few external drives that I added to different storage spaces, (1 for video, 1 for music, 1 for pics, etc...) and they are all showing up just fine under Computer, but under the Manage Storage Spaces it shows no drives listed and won't let me make any changes at all to them (as they are not showing up). I did a refresh and it came back, but then disappeared a few days later. I only installed Plex media server and windows updates are this is being used to serve media only, not used for anything else. I want to be able to go into a directory and list all the files, recursively, putting the results in a file. But when I go to the directory and do dir, it shows only . and .. and none of the files which I know are in that directory.What is going on?Is there some other way to list all the files, recursively, in a given folder and put the results in a text file which can be examined later? Hi , this is my first question in Microsoft forum, I try to connect my old computer which i haven't been using for 6 years to internet but im not successful . I think my pc doesn't have a wireless adapter . But in services i have a service called "Wireless Zero Configuration" . I have to say this to someone. I am really disappointed with Windows 8. I upgraded from W7 after a great experience with my new W8 phone. I love the UI. Metro works great for me. I don't even mind that the Windows key is gone. It's the buggyness that I can't get past. Take the mail app for example. It crashes every other email. I'm not kidding either. I delete one email. I delete the next and it crashes. Visual Studio takes 5 minutes (that's 313 seconds) to load, and I have 4 gig of RAM, a 7200 RPM drive and an i3 chip. Then I run a simple app in VS and my network simply disappears! W8 hangs at least once a day, some days several times. It is completely unresponsive for about 10 minutes. Yesterday I got a sad face, apparently the "blue screen of death" for W8. After 0% collecting some stats for 35 minutes, I hard powered off my PC and rebooted. Back to the same screen. Bummer. Had no choice but to wait. One hour later it finally returned. This afternoon I booted and my PC hung for 15 minutes. Almost completely unresponsive. The tiles won't work. The Task Manager won't open. Control-Alt-Delete gives me choices but they simply return me to the home screen and do nothing. I am so done with W8. So done with it. It is WAY worse than Vista ever was. Please tell me that Microsoft understands there is a problem and that they are diligently working on a fix. View the full article

Hi everybody, I'm considering using Windows 8 "storage spaces" to combine two external disks with 2-way mirroring. What will happen if, for some reason, my OS disk is no longer available. How will a fresh installation of Windows 8 react to an existing storage space? Hi, I had problem with my laptop. The laptop won't connect to my home network. I found the wireless network but when I hit enter after entered the password (correct), suddenly a pop up come that said 'Windows was unable connect to the network". The laptop connects well with portable hotspot in my phone (3G Tethering). But my phone (Samsung Galaxy Pocket) connects fine to the home network. My specs: Acer Aspire 4250 running Windows 7 SP1. The story so far ... I spilled a glass of cola over the keyboard of my previous laptop which caused a lot of damage to the motherboard making it an uneconomic repair. I then replaced it with the one I'm using now, but still had a few useable parts e.g. 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 750 GB HDD. While waiting for the new laptop to arrive I put the drive into an external USB caddy and attached it to my very old laptop which was overheating despite all my attempts to keep it cool. Although this only happened when tasked heavily such as converting large video files that was just what I needed to do with some urgency. After several unsuccessful attempts which only resulted in the laptop shutting down before finishing the task I was forced to put the video conversion on the back burner until the new laptop arrived complete with Windows 7 Home Premium already installed. When it did I upped the RAM from 4GB to 8GB plugged in an existing external USB drive plus the one that's giving me trouble. At first neither drive would show up in 'My Computer', but eventually Windows reported that it would like to fix the first one so I let it have a go. It took a while and a few files had been lost, but at least it was working and there was little of consequence that had been lost. In fact the replacements are more up-to-date and better than the originals! Then I plugged in the problem SATA drive in its caddy and the results were much the same as with the first one - up to a point. The recovery app was chugging along at its usual snail's pace so I left the laptop running for 3 days and nights and it was around 3/4 of the way through the task at which point there was an area power blackout and the damn thing decided to shut down the app to conserve battery power. Since then I've bit the bullet, dug deep into my wallet, and upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. Unfortunately the drive still refuses to show up in 'My Computer'. I've fired up the Disk Management Console on several occasions, but it always reports a CRC error with the drive which I first put down to it having been set to read only. Neither DMC nor Diskpart seemed to be able to clear the read only flag although I appear to have managed to do it anyway as DP's attributes command says that it's not read only now, but still not initialized so I cannot do anything with it. Having seen a suggestion in a similar question I had a go with the CHDSK app, but it reports that, even as sole administrator, I don't have sufficient privileges to use it with or without the /f extension. Hunh? The last few attempts have produced several events described as "The IO operation at logical block address 0 for Disk 2 was retried" with an "Unexpected failure. Error code: 17@02000018" before those. There's also a few occasions of "VDS fails to write boot code on a disk during clean operation Error code 80070017@02070008" showing up in the past couple of days. I would really like to have this drive working as it more than doubles my overall storage space and money is too tight at the moment to consider buying another external drive of this kind of capacity. Any suggestions will be more than gratefully received and, where possible, acted on. Thanks in advance. View this thread
