  2. At CES, Acer debuted updated models of its popular convertible notebook PC line, expanded its Creator PC line and introduced a trio of new Predator monitors with large displays and a powerful feature set. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2020/01/c4121f7aa2a9117b45edf610b9fb6047-1024x578.jpg The Spin 3 and Spin 5 now sport slimmer designs, the latest 10th Generation Intel Core processors and Windows 10 Home. Four modes (tablet, notebook, display or tent) encourage sketching, taking notes, and creating content and presentations throughout the day. The hinge features a design that elevates the keyboard in laptop mode. The Spin 5 display’s 3:2 aspect ratio adds 18% more vertical space compared to an equally wide 16:9 display, so users scroll less when viewing websites, documents and spreadsheets. Its magnesium aluminum chassis and palm rest make it durable and lightweight – only 2.65 pounds (1.2 kg). It also comes with an integrated fingerprint reader for fast and more secure logins via Windows Hello. Both include a fast-charging Acer Active Stylus that employs Wacom AES technology, reliable and speedy Wi-Fi 6, and a full range of ports, including USB Type-C with support for Thunderbolt 3. They’re also enhanced with dual speakers and Acer TrueHarmony. Dual microphones ensure a clear audio connection when using the HD webcam for online chats. You can connect to the device via voice to interact with Cortana, even in Modern Standby mode, which is designed to give consumers better access to their PC. Find out more at Acer. Acer also expands its line of ConceptD creator PCs with new convertible notebooks and a powerful workstation. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2020/01/ed9edbdd60816bab78406124cca4a529-1024x819.jpg The ConceptD 7 Ezel series comes with Acer’s Ezel hinge, which translates to five usage modes, making it easier than ever for creative professionals to collaborate, share and bring ideas to life. A desktop replacement that can be taken on the road, this series is ideal for those who want to sketch, finalize and present on one device. Creators’ work comes to life in brilliant detail and clarity on the notebooks’ 4K IPS displays (3840 x 2160 resolution) which deliver more than 8 million pixels. The displays also include integrated color correction technologies and have been tested and calibrated to deliver superior fidelity in reproducing the PANTONE Matching System (PMS) Colors. The touch screen displays provide a natural writing experience via the included Wacom EMR pen, which provides fast and accurate control. EMR pens perfectly replicate the fluidity of ink. Plus, they don’t require a battery and offer better precision, response times, resolution, pressure sensitivities, hover accessibility and durability. The displays are made of Gorilla Glass 6, making them resistant to drops. They also include an anti-glare coating, making it easy to see images when used outdoors or under bright lights. Demanding workflows are no match for a 10th Generation Intel Core H-series processor coming soon, NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs, up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory and up to 2 TB PCIe SSDs. Creators can quickly edit and render videos or create 3D animations and showcase their work in real time. The ConceptD 7 Ezel convertible notebook will be available in the U.S. in June with a starting price of $2,699. The ConceptD 7 Ezel Pro convertible notebook will be available in the U.S. in July with a starting price of $3,099. The ConceptD 700 workstation was also built to handle heavy content creator workflows with ease, thanks to an Intel Xeon E processor and up to NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 graphics to address the needs of film makers, animators and AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) designers with powerful and stable performance for 3D computer-aided design (CAD). To keep up with evolving workloads, it can go up to 64 GB 4x DIMM 2666 MHz DDR4 memory, and use fast storage options like on-board PCIe M.2 SSD. It also has four internal storage bays supporting both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch HDDs. Optimal thermal ventilation is critical for taking on heavy design rendering. The ConceptD 700 uses three efficient cooling fans to draw air in through the triangular-patterned front air panel and circulate it throughout the chassis. The Predator CG552K features a huge 55-inch 4K OLED panel that’s Adaptive Sync and HDMI VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) compatible, making it ideal for hardcore PC and console gamers wanting a higher vantage point. The 37.5-inch monitor increases gaming immersion with a 2300R curved UWQHD+ panel and VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification that makes colors pop. And the 32-inch Predator X32 gaming monitor reproduces brilliant visuals with NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate, VESA Display HDR 1400 certification and 89.5% Rec. 2020, perfect for gamers who also create their own videos. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2020/01/15052b2ad18c5a9cf24b2c5ee3568d98-1024x845.jpg The Predator X32 gaming monitor will be available in Q2 2020 for $3,599 (MSRP), the Predator X38 in April 2020 for $2,199 (MSRP) and the Predator CG552K in Q3 for $2,999 (MSRP). Host Jessica Chobot – full-time gamer and mother – covers a wide range of topics, including how to setup a new console ahead of time so kids can get right into gaming, how to set up screen time limits and content filters, and family-friendly games to consider. The short video includes lots of helpful tips, but if there is one main takeaway for parents it’s this: make sure your children are using a child or teen account when using their Xbox One console or Windows 10 device. These accounts give you access to customizable and easy to use family settings so you can decide what is right for your children: Screen Time Limits: Manage how much gaming time is appropriate for each day of the week. Content filters: Ensure kids only have access to age-appropriate content. Privacy: Determine who your kids can play and chat with. Spending Limits: Avoid surprise spending by setting up an allowance or requiring your permission to make any purchases. Head over to Xbox Wire to watch the video and find out more. But Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport was designed to be more than that. “This airport is the biggest single, walkable terminal building in the world,” says Patrik Schumacher, who leads Zaha Hadid Architects, the global firm based in London tasked with designing the airport, which opened in September. “Its distinctive character is its long span roof structure which sculpts the space, draws in natural light and orients passengers to their gates.” Schumacher was a student 30 years ago when he started working with Zaha Hadid, who passed away two years ago. He helped her build the brand to a firm of more than 400 employees. They started designing museums, cultural centers and concert halls; now the firm is also reimagining workspaces and whole city districts. One thing that helps them stay ahead of the curve is technology. The firm writes their own software, so Schumacher says they’re “very hungry” for new processing power in a mobile package, as they’re constantly roaming around the office, and around the world. They used to lug around heavy models to meetings. Now, they bring laptops. “That’s why we love Acer and ConceptD’s product line,” Schumacher says. “ConceptD is helping us to visualize and simulate the experience with real time navigation through the airport. ConceptD opens a powerful window into our creations ahead of construction.” Find out more at Microsoft Stories. 11. https://blogs.microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/2019/12/2-Cropped-3-people-Happy-Hour-3-1024x598.jpg Bill Borden and Connie Leung, Microsoft Financial Services Asia Business Lead, meet with a customer. If you worked on Wall Street like I did in the fall of 2008, you most likely can recall exactly where you were and what you were doing when the market crashed, leading to the financial crisis that shook the world. Looking back over the last decade, its impact on the financial services industry has been profound. 2010 launched new legislation, international standards, regulatory requirements and provisions that financial organizations are addressing today. In the last 10 years, financial services have also been one of the industries most impacted by digital disruption. Financial institutions gradually shifted their views of technology from a way to improve operational efficiencies – automating manual and paper processes – to enhancing customer service through mobile solutions, and now as a transformative tool to enable everything from new business models, to compliance, to combating financial crime. As we prepare to enter the 2020s, what will the financial services industry need to succeed in the next decade? Below, I share a few predictions, learnings and tips to help financial organizations thrive. The next decade of financial services Looking ahead, financial services organizations will need to be at the forefront of both technological disruption and geopolitical shifts. Together, these influences will continue to bring new competitive pressures, change the nature of work, impact people’s major life purchases, evolve customer expectations, and create the need to adapt business models and products to reflect societal and economic norms. Banks will also need to foster trust with a new generation of customers and employees who have different preferences and expectations. As technology enables business models to shift and products and services to evolve, competition will be fierce, and relationships will change. Who in the industry is now a friend or foe? The single biggest tension will be between the traditional financial services organizations – particularly banks – and new, non-financial services entrants into the market who are carving away large portions of business and customers. Among these disruptors, “digital natives” pose the largest threat. Their business models are enabling them to quickly build and adapt new, intelligent products and acquire dedicated customers at an incredible pace. That said, innovations that are helping digital natives thrive will also provide industry incumbents with the ability and agility to enable cultural and digital transformation and keep pace with the changing world. As I meet with our global customers, a common focus is on moving faster with higher impact. So, is there a formula for future success? Leading with tech intensity At Microsoft, we believe what will determine an organization’s future success is an approach called “tech intensity.” We see tech intensity as an equation: Tech Intensity = (Tech Adoption X Tech Capability) ^ Trust, and as a company, we are focused on providing the inputs to help our customers solve it. Speed technology adoption: First, every leader will need to tune their organization to become a fast adopter of best-in-class technology. The use of cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, open APIs and blockchain are all key technology tools that can help financial services address ongoing challenges and modernize and transform the way they do business now and in the future. At the core of their success is the ability to tap into the volumes of available data —from both inside and outside their organizations — and use it in meaningful ways to unlock new value, insights, opportunities and revenue streams. As an example, LV= General Insurance (LV= GI) is one of the U.K.’s largest personal lines insurers with more than $2.23 billion annual premium income and serving more than 4 million customers. Data scientists within LV= GI looked for opportunities to supplement their existing claims processing expertise with machine learning to increase certainty in claim resolution. The result was a pioneering AI solution that LV= GI believes is – not only U.K.-leading – but industry leading worldwide. The results of integrating the new AI-driven system exceeded LV=GI’s expectations by reducing the 20% of complex, unclear claims to an astonishing 3.9%. It’s a massive swing that delivers customers real value and a net benefit to LV= GI in excess of seven figures. Build unique capabilities: Second and equally important, organizations will need to build their own unique digital capabilities, essentially becoming technology companies themselves. There’s a very important human factor here that starts with workers who are deeply knowledgeable about the latest technology, backed by a culture that encourages capability-building and collaboration to generate new, breakthrough concepts. New York-based Mastercard, processing about $20 billion in transactions a day across more than 210 countries or territories, and Microsoft, one of the top e-commerce merchants in the world, both felt an urgency in shifting toward online payments – especially with the increasing popularity of mobile apps and devices, which has made security more difficult even as consumers expect greater ease of use. Bringing together teams of engineers, the two companies spent three days hacking together and came up with a new service to make shopping online easier and more secure around the world, not only for shoppers, but also retailers and banks. This tech-intensity collaboration kicked off a new way of thinking about innovation that promises to lead to even more developments to help e-commerce thrive. Ensure trust is your priority: Third, leadership in the digital economy will be exponentially amplified by the level of trust created with customers, partners and stakeholders — for their organization and the underlying technology. With the goal of creating legendary experiences for more than 26 million customers, TD Bank Group, one of North America’s largest banks, knows that keeping up with changes in customer expectations and anticipating their needs is critical. They also know just how important each step of the customer’s journey is to their feeling about the experience. They are using the benefits of the cloud and complex information processing capabilities to receive detailed results from their data about the factors influencing customer satisfaction — including the feeling of trust the customer has — to improve the overall experience and deepen relationships with its customers. Today, we announced results of a new Microsoft study, which found broad agreement across industries that tech intensity is essential for their survival: 75 percent of those surveyed said it’s the most effective way to build a competitive advantage today, and 83 percent agreed it’s critical for future success. Building the future together Tech intensity is the motivation behind our mission at Microsoft to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As the new decade brings new challenges and opportunities, we are committed to helping our financial services customers unlock the power of data and empower their tech intensity journeys, by providing them with the choice of a more secure and compliant platform embedded with pervasive intelligence. Here are a few tips to help harness the benefits of tech intensity. Adopt an entrepreneurial outlook that encourages risk-taking. Be willing to look outside your organization – and even industry – to gain a broader perspective of what technology can make possible. Stay up to date on the latest trends in software and applications so your IT team has access to the latest commercial platforms, tools and training. This way, they can avoid recreating technology that has already been commoditized. Seek resources on building trust in your technology. A good place to start is our AI Business School and new white papers — providing Microsoft’s perspective on ethical AI principles in financial services and exploring how to implement governance and risk management to foster the responsible use of AI. While the new decade will bring many challenges for the financial services industry, I believe it will bring even more opportunities. We’re already seeing many of our customers leading in the industry with a tech-intensity approach, and I’m excited to see how it will help our customers grow their businesses even more. Visit the Microsoft Financial Services Blog for more information on our work in the industry. 12. Hello Windows Insiders, today we’re releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19536 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. The Fast ring going forward Back in early November, we announced that Windows Insiders who had opted into Skip Ahead would be migrated back into the Fast ring with the goal of providing everyone in the Fast ring the freshest builds at the same time. With today’s flight—we’re excited to put that plan into motion! Internally, our engineers work in development cycles with various milestones. The active development branch (called “RS_PRERELEASE”) is where the teams check in all their latest code changes into the OS. Moving forward, the Fast ring will receive builds directly from this active development branch and new features will show up in these builds first. While features in the active development branch may be slated for a future Windows 10 release, they are no longer matched to a specific Windows 10 release. This means that builds from the active development branch simply reflect the latest work in progress code from our engineers. New features and OS improvements done in this branch during these development cycles will show up in future Windows 10 releases when they are ready. And we may deliver these new features and OS improvements as full OS build updates or servicing releases. We heard the feedback from Insiders in the Fast ring loud and clear that the way we were doing Skip Ahead was a little confusing and frustrating for those who didn’t get a chance to opt-in before the limit was reached. With the changes mentioned above, Insiders in the Fast ring will always receive builds with the freshest code from our engineers regardless of branching off for a specific release. Everyone in the Fast ring is always moving forward! What’s new in Build 19536 Optional Drivers We’re still working on making it easier for you to see all optional updates (including drivers, feature updates, and monthly non-security quality updates) in one place. When optional updates are detected, they will be listed under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View optional updates. For drivers, you no longer need to browse Device Manager for a specific device to update. Windows Update will automatically keep your drivers up to date, but if you’re having a problem, one of those optional drivers might help. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/f92952d4b5339c0980ef773a57cc9003.png Re-releasing the updated Korean IME During 19H1 development, we’d started work on an updated version of the Korean IME as part of our ongoing efforts to modernize and improve your typing experience in Windows. Based on feedback, we decided not to ship this with 19H1, and instead worked on further improving the experience first. With Build 19528, we’re re-releasing the updated IME, along with some improvements that help it work better with various apps. To recap the most noticeable changes included as part of this IME work: For those who’re familiar with typing in Korean when writing in Hanja, we have a new candidate selection window that uses modern controls and clearer typography: https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/17baa87bb553ab0d1bc9f5de682d3a7d.png The new IME version also comes with an updated algorithm used for text prediction when writing Korean using the touch keyboard. Text suggestions should now be more accurate and relevant to what you are writing. Family group setup Microsoft has family features that span across multiple platforms, like Windows, Xbox, and Android. On Windows, you can set things up for your family, like screen time limits, content filters, have kids ask before they buy things, or even stay organized with a shared family calendar, OneNote, and Office 365 Home subscription. If you share a device with family, it’s easy to get their account set up in a family group to take advantage of all these features. In this build, we want to help customers set up their device to be used by multiple people in their family. While we’re not releasing an ISO for this build, some Insiders who choose to reset their PC may see a screen during setup that asks who’ll be using the device. If they select People in my family, we’ll help them get set up in a family group once they get to their desktop, so that they’re ready to get started with all the features. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/df545e6188f866eee1db8f9f73382240.png If you see this new page, let us know what you think by going to Security and Privacy > Child accounts and family settings in the Feedback Hub. Other updates for Insiders Your Phone app – new features rolling to Insiders and production Photos has evolved. View and interact with your most recent 2000 photos! General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC Whether you want to increase your productivity, decrease your stress levels, or just free up some mental space, Microsoft To Do makes it easy to plan your day and manage your life. If you are opening To Do for the first time, you may notice some new UI that helps ensure you have the latest version of To Do installed. You will only see this the first time you open the app, and users who already have To Do installed will not see this step at all. Windows RE (Recovery Environment) no longer requires an administrator password to access recovery tools. We’ve updated the new File Explorer search experience to enable you to remove previous searches via an option if you right click the entry in the dropdown. We fixed an issue resulting in the first character of your query getting dropped when “automatically type into the search box” File Explorer setting was enabled. We fixed an issue that could result in unexpectedly needing to re-download the whole game when an update to your installed game came via the store. We fixed an issue that could result in Task Manager’s icon not appearing in the notification area of the taskbar even though it had been enabled in Settings. We fixed an issue that could result in Resource Manager getting stuck and not showing any disk activity. We fixed an issue with the Vietnamese Telex keyboard where after typing an upper-case letter in certain apps, Ctrl+A would stop working in that app. We fixed an issue where creating a new storage pool in the UI would fail with incorrect parameter. We fixed an issue where after dragging the bottom of a UWP app up to resize it, any further resizing actions from the bottom wouldn’t work. With this build, users who had previously used HomeGroup will no longer see a notification on upgrade about its deprecation. We fixed a typo in the text under Settings > Search > Searching Window. We’re working on adding Downloads Folder to your Privacy Settings options, and you’ll see it in today’s flight. More details will be shared later. We fixed an issue where if your device was offline, Narrator would still announce that language features were available to download when you navigated to the per-language options under Language Settings. We fixed an issue that could result in no tooltip with the full text appearing in Settings when hovering over text truncated with an ellipsis. We’re removing the separate Hotspot 2.0 setting under Wi-Fi. This setting was provided while the feature was still in experimental phase, and having it enabled is now part of having Wi-Fi enabled. We fixed an issue that could result in the Bluetooth battery level displayed in Settings getting stuck and thus reducing accuracy. We fixed an issue where if you rolled back the build you were on, Windows Update might still list the older build number under Update History. Known issues BattlEye and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues due to changes in the operating system between some Insider Preview builds and certain versions of BattlEye anti-cheat software. To safeguard Insiders who might have these versions installed on their PC, we have applied a compatibility hold on these devices from being offered affected builds of Windows Insider Preview. See this article for details. We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build. We’re looking into reports of certain external USB 3.0 drives not responding with Start Code 10 after they’re attached. The Optimize Drives Control Panel is incorrectly reporting that optimization has never run on some devices. Optimization is completing successfully, even though it is not reflected in the UI. The Documents section under Privacy has a broken icon (just a rectangle). Share your desktop experience directly with our engineers If you’re a regular user of Windows, Office 365, Microsoft Edge, SharePoint—or all four—we’d like to talk with you about your experience at an upcoming research event. Organized by Microsoft User Research, this voluntary, online event is a unique opportunity to talk one-on-one with our Microsoft engineers and help guide future development—so you can do even more on your PC, faster and more efficiently. Microsoft User Research: Desktop experience Tuesday, Dec 17 from 10:45am-12:45pm PST (tomorrow!) Get more details, including how to call in. 13. Every day, we have questions. Search engines, apps, digital voice assistants, or phones are usually our go-to places to find answers. You may already know that you can use the search bar in Windows – found on your PC taskbar – to find things like an app, setting, or a file you’ve been working on. But did you know it can also find answers to questions like… What’s the weather like in Paris? What’s the score of the Leicester City match? How do you unzip a file? Windows brings all these searches together in one place. It’s easy to find and easy to use. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/e68705327b7e73244b89f15f7b048fdb.jpg You don’t have to scroll through a long list of results, you don’t have to open a browser, and you don’t have to leave whatever application you’re in. With a couple of keystrokes, you can find your answers. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/ecd9083fd4ff4757d20cdab12d5a2e83-1024x768.jpg “The goal was to enable search in Windows to bring the web to where you are,” says Alexander Campbell, a senior program manager working on search. “People spend a lot of time on the web and in browsers. We saw an opportunity to help people save time in Windows by bringing convenient, fast web results directly to the search bar in Windows. Stay on task and in your flow, just by hitting the Windows key or clicking on the search box.” It’s also a convenient place to start a search that leads to a website. From the search bar in Windows, you can quickly type and navigate to a URL, without having to open a browser first. “We have a search experience that gives you quick answers, web results and helps you start your web task. It’s amazing what you can do with it,” he adds. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/bd5b88c5509de4f9ba94f2edd8cb124f-1024x768.jpg Every day it gets more useful: a full web search experience powered by the intelligence of Bing. You can search for quick calculations, music videos, movie trailers, sports scores, stock prices, movie times, weather forecasts and much more. Results turn up right in the taskbar. If you want to see more, you can open the results in your browser. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/fcef37749b4ded65eeae27bd235f9e15-1024x768.jpg “The search bar in Windows gives you the quick info you need with none of the distraction,” Campbell says. “In the middle of an essay? It’s easy to jump in, check a fact and then get back to your work.” The Windows and Bing teams worked together to bring a true web search experience into Windows, just like what you’d expect in a browser, into the search bar. And the teams continue to improve the search capability thanks to your feedback and Bing innovation. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/99b2cd42a4903613ecdeeeae49d3887b-1024x768.jpg The search bar is also the best place to go when you need to get things done on your Windows 10 device. Let’s say you need to download an app, Search can find it for you fast. For example, type “download microsoft to-do” or “download solitaire” and get an install link in the results preview. It’s also an easy way to get Tech Help answers to common questions, like “how do I connect a printer” or “how do I unzip files.” https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/08648a211529e061cc2be62881ab8c25-1024x768.jpg And now, in addition to entering a text search, you can search with an image by taking a screenshot. This feature is rolling out to users in the U.S. first with international markets to follow shortly after. (You need the Windows 10 May 2019 Update or newer to see this.) Simply click the Bing Visual Search button in the bottom right corner and snip any part of your screen to search the web using the image. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/110f38ab678ba343f448e7221906bae2.gif “Visual search is a new way of searching,” says Ravi Yada, product lead for Bing Visual Search. “There are a lot of things you can’t describe in words to get good enough results. By using an image as input for search, Bing can help you search what you see.” Bing added camera-based searches in 2017, and made visual search features available in the Windows Photos App, Microsoft Edge, the Bing App and on Android phones through Microsoft Launcher. With the latest releases of Windows, you can use Windows Search to snip any part of your screen and search. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/fa1e1584d030eb3d9efa0b186ef0473d.jpg https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/f6634952c46d4420ad999d31187104e1.jpg “We found people also wanted to search with screenshots, so we brought searching with screen snips to the Windows search bar,” says Nektarios Ioannides, Bing Image Search lead. For instance, if you’re planning your wardrobe for winter and you want inspiration from what your favorite celebs are wearing? You’ll find similar results. Or you might be shopping for furniture and see a sofa you like. Snip it and use it to comparison shop with Visual Search results [1]. Aside from finding similar products, Visual Search can recognize landmarks, flowers, celebrities, animals. It also recognizes text in images, so you can copy or search it [2]. “Search is evolving. We’re still expanding the breadth of capabilities,” Ioannides says. “It’s cool to see the growth and excitement it generates, especially as we move into a world where using our eyes to search becomes more common.” https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/906cb66f898b669979dad328ca423165.gif For developers, there’s an API to incorporate Visual Search within products and apps they create. “Search in Windows is now more intelligent than ever at getting you where you want to go, saving steps and time,” Campbell says. “We can’t wait to see how you use it.” Let us know your feedback and what you want to see next by clicking the “Feedback” button in the top right corner of the search experience. Eager to try this yourself? If you’re reading this on a device running Windows 10 May 2019 Update or newer, click on the following examples: Open Search home “How to zip files” “5 pounds to euro” “Boston to Seattle flight status” [1] Shopping results are only available to users in the United States and United Kingdom. Pushing against expectations, this girl became one of the pre-eminent technologists of our times and made it possible to convert human language into machine code understood by computers. On Dec. 9, the anniversary of Admiral Grace Hopper’s birthday kicks off Computer Science Education Week, an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. As technology such as AI and cloud computing rapidly transforms the future of work, it’s more important than ever for students and educators to develop STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—skills. It’s estimated that over 85 million jobs worldwide will go unfilled by 2030 if we don’t bridge the STEM skills gap—but schools often struggle to implement quality STEM curriculum and prepare students for career paths that are just starting to come into focus. Inspire students to ignite a passion for Computer Science Microsoft Stores are committed to empowering students and educators with computer science resources and will host over 400 events in partnership with STEM influencers throughout Computer Science Education Week across locations. Ensuring no one is left behind when it comes to developing increasingly crucial computer science skills, programming this year has an increased focus on inclusion for traditionally underrepresented students. Microsoft Store workshops will offer hands-on learning centered around coding, game design, app development and more using technologies from Windows, Surface, Office 365, Minecraft and more. Participants will hear from a diverse group of mentors and organizations from across the STEM field, including Lynell Caldwell, NASA, Brandon Copeland, Black Girls Code, Al Smith, Curtis Baham, Lee Woodall, Dennis Brown and Titus O’Neil. https://blogs.windows.com/wp-content/uploads/prod/sites/2/2019/12/a4d89566a3c17a717fcc91f8f146da61.jpg Check your local Microsoft Store to register for exciting workshops geared toward empowering every learner, including workshops like; Latina Girls in Gaming with MakeCode Arcade: Learn basic block coding and create video games with Gabriela Ponce, producer with Turn 10 Studios and advocate for helping the Latinx community succeed in the gaming industry. Gaby will share more about her journey combining her passions for art, culture and technology, and empower Latina girls to embrace STEM skills. All Kids Code with Tynker Space Quest: Solve coding puzzles to guide an astronaut in space with Nadmi Casiano, the first deaf woman to graduate with an aeronautical engineering degree. All students are welcome, and ASL interpreters will be available at participating Microsoft Store locations to empower students with hearing disabilities. African American Girls Code with Tynker Space Quest: Joan Higgenbotham, one of the first African American female astronauts to go into space, will share her experience at a workshop geared toward inspiring African American Girls to pursue STEM. Participants will learn basic coding concepts in an engaging format as they navigate aliens in search for a spaceship. MANCODE with Design and Code Apps: Brainstorm app ideas and bring ideas to life with MANCODE, an organization aimed at addressing the stagnate growth of African American males within the STEM industry, who currently represent only 2.2% of the field. This workshop is geared toward underrepresented male students aged 13 and older, who will meet a male minority mentor and learn about the importance of technology. Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit Workshop: Explore the magic of STEM at a Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit Workshop that introduces foundational coding concepts, including drag-and-drop coding. This autism-friendly workshop features alternate activities to allow a broad level of participation, and parents are welcome to join with their child. In addition to these workshops, Microsoft Stores will also host Minecraft Hour of Code workshops, teaching students of all ages to code with Minecraft. The new Minecraft Hour of Code lesson aligns with this year’s theme, Computer Science for Good. Students will explore coding and artificial intelligence as they protect a village from forest fires in an immersive Minecraft world. 21. What do you believe creates our future? We believe it’s imagination. Take a moment to imagine with us. What if the clothes you wear could be both beautiful and alert you to increases in harmful pollution? What if cloud technologies based on optics could make datacenters more affordable and more sustainable? What if we could use every bit of data on every species that ever existed, to help tackle our toughest conservation challenges? Innovation and imagination rely on our ability to see things differently. Microsoft is full of people who do just that, and the result of their alternative perspectives are groundbreaking ideas that will help shape the future. We are proud to share some of their most exciting projects and visions to inspire you to imagine along with us – stimulating your own ideas to spark even more breakthroughs. This is the idea behind ALT: The future from an alternative perspective, an initiative designed to open a window to some of our projects through video stories, labs and online experiences and at events. We want more people to experience our biggest, boldest bets and dive even deeper into how we are looking at the world’s greatest challenges from a different perspective. Think about computing, for example. By 2025, a fifth of the world’s total power is expected to be consumed by datacenters. We need to rethink compute, storage and networking to fulfill the future needs and do it in a sustainable way. In one of the projects highlighted, the future of the datacenter, we explore how optics can address this challenge. An example of this larger effort is Project Silica, which provides the ability to store terabytes of data on a virtually indestructible, thin platter of glass. But beyond ones and zeros, we’re also thinking about Gs, Cs, As, and Ts – the building blocks of DNA. Applying programming principles to biology has the potential to transform medicine, agriculture and energy at global scale. Within Microsoft Research, a team known as Station B has been working with partners to leverage our expertise in languages, compilers, machine learning and cloud to develop the tools that will allow scientists to uncover computation in living systems. We will continue to share these and many more ideas to spark your imagination. Just today we are releasing a new story that I hope you find as inspiring as we do – “A planetary computer of Earth.” This story shares how through artificial intelligence (AI) the power of cloud computing we can convert massive amounts of data into the insights and information needed by researchers, academics and environmental experts to create a more sustainable planet, redefining areas such as agriculture, biodiversity, climate change and water. YouTube Video All these stories share our principled approach to innovation. We believe innovation should be meaningful – developed for lasting impact. We believe technology should be created to make our lives better, but also that can be trusted. And lastly, we believe innovation should be applied, turning incubations into mainstream products and platforms that help you to do the same. The magic that comes when imagination becomes reality – when breakthroughs become disruptive technologies – is incredible! Think about the many technologies that started with these principles in mind and are now available for you to use and build on top of. Azure Cognitive Services which is now used by more than 1.3 million developers, started as an incubation project called “Project Oxford” and now puts our AI innovations in the hands of every developer. Automated Machine Learning began as a research paper on how to use machine learning to create machine learning and is now included in PowerBI, enabling hundreds of thousands of business users to create their own AI models. Just last week we released our annual holiday ad which showcases Microsoft Translator – which doesn’t really translate reindeer but is used by millions of people through the power of Microsoft Office, Teams or Skype. YouTube Video Think about the ambitious ideas, once considered unattainable, that are now part of our lives. Far-off visions coming out of “science fiction,” that were once considered fantasy are now reality. As a long-time “Star Trek” fan, I’m amazed that the replicators I saw as a kid are now 3D printers, that “virtual display devices” are wearable technology and the concept of “warp speed” continues to be explored as a way to make interplanetary travel possible. Looking at things from an alternative perspective gives us all license to imagine, dream and create. We invite you to join us on this journey of imagination and possibility. Visit ALT: The future from an alternative perspective to experience the stories, consider what’s important to you and set off on your innovation journey today. 22. Hello Windows Insiders, today we’re releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19035 (20H1) to Windows Insiders in BOTH the Fast ring and Slow rings. If you want a complete look at what build is in which Insider ring, head over to Flight Hub. You can also check out the rest of our documentation here including a complete list of new features and updates that have gone out as part of Insider flights for the current development cycle. NOTE: We are looking to begin releasing new builds from our development branch *very soon*. This means we will be releasing builds to Insiders in the Fast ring from the RS_PRERELEASE development branch again instead of the VB_RELEASE branch. This also means the desktop watermark will be returning with these builds. As is normal with pre-release builds, these builds may contain bugs and be less stable. Now is the time to check your Windows Insider Settings and switch to the Slow ring before if you wish to remain on 20H1. For Insiders in the Fast ring who have selected to stop getting Insider Preview builds when the next major release of Windows 10 is available under Windows Insider Settings, we will be moving you to the Slow ring as part of honoring this setting. You will remain here until 20H1 is finalized. This only applies to Insiders in the Fast ring who selected this. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC The build watermark at the lower right-hand corner of the desktop is no longer present in this build. This doesn’t mean we’re done… We’ve completed the experiment related to how we deliver driver updates through Windows Update. Devices that were involved in the experiment will no longer see the Optional Updates link under Settings > Windows Update. This also resolves an issue where after successfully installing printer drivers from the Optional Updates section, the same driver is still showing as available for install. Thanks to the Insiders who have provided feedback on this feature. We fixed an issue that could result in fingerprint (if enabled) sometimes unexpectedly not being offered as a sign-in option after waking your device from sleep. We fixed an issue that could result in certain apps not launching the first time you tried after resetting the app via Settings. Thank you for all the feedback you provided on the Store version of Notepad. At this time, we’ve decided not to roll this out to customers. Insiders may notice some changes as we remove this change from this build: If you pinned Notepad to your Taskbar or Start menu, you will need to re-pin after you upgrade to this new build. If you had certain file types set to open in Notepad by default, you will see a prompt when you try to open files of that type again and will need to re-select Notepad. Some Insiders have reported when attempting to install recent builds, setup rolls back and returns error code 0xc1900101. In some cases, the update completes successfully on a subsequent attempt. If you are experiencing the issue, please be sure to file feedback in the Feedback Hub. We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build. We’re looking into reports of certain external USB 3.0 drives not responding with Start Code 10 after they’re attached. We’ve received reports of the Optimize Drives app incorrectly reporting that optimization has never run on SSD devices. Continuing our #WIPTurns5 celebrations In honor of the Windows Insider Program turning 5 this year, we’ll be celebrating with a special holiday treat!
