  3. https://blogs.microsoft.com/uploads/prod/2018/05/Team-1024x726.jpg Team members from Semantic Machines. AI researchers have made great strides in recent years, but we are still at the beginning of teaching computers to understand the full context of human communication. Most of today’s bots and intelligent assistants respond to simple commands and queries, such as giving a weather report, playing a song or sharing a reminder, but aren’t able to understand meaning or carry on conversations. For rich and effective communication, intelligent assistants need to be able to have a natural dialogue instead of just responding to commands. We call this “conversational AI.” We are excited to announce today that we have acquired Semantic Machines Inc., a Berkeley, California-based company that has developed a revolutionary new approach to building conversational AI. Their work uses the power of machine learning to enable users to discover, access and interact with information and services in a much more natural way, and with significantly less effort. The company is led by many pioneers in conversational AI, including technology entrepreneur Dan Roth and two of the most prominent and innovative natural language AI researchers in the world, UC Berkeley professor Dan Klein and Stanford University professor Percy Liang, as well as former Apple chief speech scientist Larry Gillick. Microsoft has driven research and breakthroughs in the fundamental building blocks of conversational AI, such as speech recognition and natural language understanding, for more than two decades. The goal has been to expand our vision of computers all around us to a world where they could see, hear talk and understand as humans. In 2016, we took another big step toward realizing this vision of conversational computing with the introduction of a framework for developing bots and the release of pre-built Cognitive Services for infusing speech recognition and natural language understanding into intelligent assistants. Today, there are more than 1 million developers using our Microsoft Cognitive Services and more than 300,000 developers using our Azure Bot Service, all helping to make computing more conversational. We are further developing our work in conversational AI with our digital assistant Cortana, as well as with social chatbots like XiaoIce. XiaoIce has had more than 30 billion conversations, averaging up to 30 minutes each, with 200 million users across platforms in China, Japan, the United States, India and Indonesia. With XiaoIce and Cortana, we’ve made breakthroughs in speech recognition and more recently become the first to add full-duplex voice sense to a conversational AI system, allowing people to carry on a conversation naturally. With the acquisition of Semantic Machines, we will establish a conversational AI center of excellence in Berkeley to push forward the boundaries of what is possible in language interfaces. Combining Semantic Machines’ technology with Microsoft’s own AI advances, we aim to deliver powerful, natural and more productive user experiences that will take conversational computing to a new level. We’re excited to bring the Semantic Machines team and their technology to Microsoft. For more information on Semantic Machines, visit http://www.semanticmachines.com/. 4. Today I’m thrilled to share a new collaboration between Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Microsoft’s Quantum team demonstrating the power of quantum computing. With the goal of improving patient care, Case Western Reserve will use Microsoft’s quantum-inspired algorithms to enhance their approach to detecting cancerous tumors. This scenario is a great example of an organization using quantum technology to solve the real-world challenges of today. Case Western Reserve has been leading groundbreaking research in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a space that previously hadn’t drastically changed in decades. To improve accuracy of MRI results in less time, Case Western introduced an approach called magnetic resonance fingerprinting. Where typical MRI machines use a series of fixed acquisitions to establish a diagnosis, magnetic resonance fingerprinting uses a constantly varying sequence of pulses, resulting in a single, unified exam. The final quantitative maps are generated by comparing the response against a lookup table, resulting in a more rapid and repeatable characterization of tissues. This approach brings significant improvements over traditional MRI methods, but the remaining challenge is in identifying the best sequence of pulses and readouts in order to achieve the best scan efficiency, or an acquisition optimized for identifying a particular disease. These are problems conventional computational methods will take too long to solve. Microsoft will help optimize the pulse sequences by mapping the problem to a form suitable for quantum computers and then use a quantum-inspired algorithm, which runs on the classical computers we have today. By generating an optimized pulse sequence, researchers at CWRU will be able to create a solution that improves the diagnostic capability of MRI. This work will lead to an improved patient experience, requiring less time in the MRI machine and providing more accurate, rapid results. Once the scan is complete, Microsoft HoloLens will be used for a 3D, holographic model of the results. This is an inspiring demonstration of an organization taking advantage of the quantum capabilities offered today with our quantum-inspired algorithms and Microsoft Azure simulator. We see incredible possibilities to not only improve the quality of healthcare and medical research, but also demonstrate how quantum computing, machine learning, and mixed reality can be combined to turn challenges of the past into solutions of the future. 5. Today we celebrate the seventh annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day and announce new technology and resources for people with disabilities. The goal of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about accessibility. For us, it’s also about digging deep into how technology can empower the 1 billion people worldwide who have disabilities. Not only is it important that we do this for our customers and our employees, it’s also an exciting area for technology and innovation to drive incredible impact. In 2011, the World Health Organization changed the definition of disability to the result of a mismatch between what a person wants to achieve and the environment or society that he or she lives in. Technology can play a leading role in bridging the gap. It’s both exciting to think about the tremendous opportunity to empower and humbling to think about our responsibility to get it right. Technology has human impact. It can empower people like Dan, a devoted gamer whose life was changed by an accident; Nori, who is passionate about Japanese culture and public speaking and has low vision; and Joseph, a first-year student who studies biology at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and is deaf. While we live our mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more every day, on GAAD we are pleased to be announcing the Xbox Adaptive Controller, a new technology to help more gamers game. We’re highlighting AI for Accessibility, which provides opportunities for inventors and researchers to use AI to empower people with disabilities. We’re reimagining accessibility as an important issue we can tackle together through a short film. And we’re launching a new Microsoft Accessibility website to make it easy to find, discover and experience all that we are doing. As our CEO Satya Nadella recently said, “The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.” In the long term, we believe that designing with and for people with disabilities will lead to innovations in ubiquitous inclusive computing. In the short term, it’s about ensuring that accessibility is woven into the fabric of how we design and build. Accessibility isn’t optional. The results are tangible. Last week at Microsoft’s Build conference, we showed a . Microsoft employee Katie Sullivan arrived late but was able to catch up on what she missed by reading the transcript via Microsoft Translator and auto-generated meeting notes and actions made available when the meeting ended. She used this technology side-by-side with her ASL interpreter to ensure she brought her full self and her amazing engineering knowledge to the table. This technology is crucial to Katie and to me as deaf individuals, but the benefits accrued to everyone else at that table. It’s a beautiful example of how accessibility can be effortless, ubiquitous and empowering to everyone. We need to get these technologies into more people’s hands, and we’re excited to share new features that help people play, work and build human connections as we continue to drive awareness. And it’s just one example of how we are working every day to create a more inclusive world. Here are a few of the other ways we’re ensuring inclusive innovations are infused in modern life, employment and human connection: Game on! As I learn daily from my kids, gaming is a huge part of modern life and having fun. I’m thrilled by the progress we are making to empower more people with awesome gaming experiences. Today, we announced the Xbox Adaptive Controller, coming later this year. Designed primarily for gamers with limited mobility, the Xbox Adaptive Controller allows you to create a custom controller experience that can be adapted to meet the needs of people with various disabilities in an affordable way. We gained feedback from people with disabilities and collaborated with gamers to build an accessible controller from the ground up, and I think this will make a huge difference for gamers of all abilities — connecting more gamers than ever before. From the Xbox Adaptive Controller to Copilot and Game Chat Transcription, advancements in technology are playing an important role to make gaming more inclusive. These initiatives have grown out of our Inclusive Tech Lab, a resource for employees across the company to come and test new ideas, receive feedback from people with disabilities and truly make gaming for everyone. Accelerating innovation This is a transformative time for technology and innovation. Learning from the past is crucial as we look forward to the possibilities with AI. We want to inspire more innovation with AI, so we were thrilled to announce AI for Accessibility at last week’s Microsoft Build conference. AI for Accessibility is a new $25 million, five-year program to put AI tools in the hands of developers, makers, researchers and academics to accelerate the development of accessible and intelligent AI solutions. Get creating! Just last week in Today in Technology, Microsoft President Brad Smith shared his thoughts on Louis Braille, who created Braille at the age of 12. Louis Braille and today’s Seeing AI inventors share the same spirit of innovation to enable people who are blind and with low vision connect with the world. Seeing AI is an iOS app that narrates the visual world around you. Seeing AI launches today in 21 new countries, bringing global availability to 56 countries— and we can’t wait to hear how you use it. Accessibility in the modern workplace We need to make accessibility a priority in the modern workplace to enable transformative change. To make that easier, we’ve included built-in assistive technologies and accessibility features in our mainstream technologies such as Microsoft 365: Empowering people with disabilities to create, consume and share content in their preferred way is a key part of the Microsoft 365 vision for accessibility in the modern workplace. We have enhanced many of our existing features over the past year and created new ones, including Ease of Access settings in Windows 10 and more built-in settings such as Read Aloud and Dictate in Office 365. We are also unveiling new Office 365 features to help diverse teams collaborate inclusively and ensure equal access to information for people with disabilities. Get a closer look at the latest accessible technologies and discover additional ways to foster digital inclusion in your workplace by watching the short film: Empower every person: reimagining accessibility. To help create more inclusive digital environments, we are also showcasing how Windows 10 and Office 365 in Education focuses on creating inclusive classrooms. Raising awareness every day Technology has become a crucial component in our daily lives, and learning, sharing discussing how to be inclusive with our technology has never been more important. Look for these opportunities in the coming weeks, as well as ways you can get involved and informed: Microsoft Store locations across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico are proud to host Ability Week from Tuesday, May 29, through Saturday, June 2. It’s a five-day series of events focused on accessibility. Today we launched the new microsoft.com/accessibility website, which provides an overview of all the Microsoft technology available, as well as details of our dedicated Disability Answer Desk support team and more. Coming up on July 1, Seattle will host 4,000 athletes and coaches from across the country to compete in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games for the state of Washington. Microsoft is proud to be the presenting sponsor of these games, and I can’t wait to cheer on the athletes alongside our employee volunteers supporting the event. We need your feedback! We count on your feedback to keep us moving forward, and we will keep pushing to create a more inclusive world for every person on the planet to achieve more. You can share your ideas on the Accessibility UserVoice Forum, and don’t forget to bookmark the Disability Answer Desk and Accessibility Blog. It is an incredibly exciting time to be at Microsoft. I am proud of our recent momentum, excited at the journey ahead and looking forward to continuing the conversation with @MSFTEnable on Twitter. See you there! 6. Here are some of the highlights from Phil’s post: “We have been on a journey of inclusive design, which celebrates and draws inspiration from people who are often overlooked in the typical design process. For gamers with limited mobility, finding controller solutions to fit their individual needs has been challenging. The solutions that exist today are often expensive, hard to find, or require significant technical skill to create. A number of individuals and organizations are creating custom solutions, but it has been often difficult for them to scale when most rigs need to be so personalized. Joining the Xbox family of controllers and devices, the Xbox Adaptive Controller was created to address these challenges and remove barriers to gaming by being adaptable to more gamers’ needs. It was developed in partnership with organizations around the world, including The AbleGamers Foundation, The Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Craig Hospital, SpecialEffect, and Warfighter Engaged. We worked closely with them and directly with gamers who have limited mobility to assist in our development. Our goal was to make the device as adaptable as possible, so gamers can create a setup that works for them in a way that is plug-and-play, extensible, and affordable. In addition to working with common adaptive switches that gamers with limited mobility may already own, it has two large buttons built in. These buttons can also be reprogrammed to act as any of the standard controller’s button inputs via the Xbox Accessories app. To make the Xbox Adaptive Controller a viable solution for the widest possible range of gamers with limited mobility, we’ve worked closely with third-party manufacturers to support external inputs which can be plugged in to the new controller. At $99.99 USD and available exclusively through Microsoft Store, the Xbox Adaptive Controller will offer significant value over the customized alternatives that exist today. We’re looking forward to sharing more about the Xbox Adaptive Controller in a few weeks at E3. The Xbox Adaptive Controller will be launching later this year, and we’ll share more information soon about pre-order availability.” To read the full post from Phil Spencer, head over to Xbox Wire, and learn more about accessibility at Microsoft here. 7. At Microsoft, we want to empower every person and every organization to achieve more. We deeply believe everyone should have the opportunity to reach their potential and we can help by empowering all people, regardless of their abilities. Global Accessibility Awareness Day gives us the chance to celebrate our differences and reflect on the ways in which we continue to strive to make Windows more accessible to everyone in their everyday life. Windows for each of us. Inclusion starts with embracing what makes each of us unique. And it’s this belief that drives our passion to create technology that reflects the diversity of our customers. We have teams dedicated to discovering ways to make technology more accessible, developing products such as the recently updated Narrator, a built-in screen reader that empowers people with low or no vision to navigate and use their computers. Narrator helps people who are blind or have a visual impairment to read the text that is displayed on the computer screen with a speech synthesizer or braille display. This feature is invaluable to many of our customers, including Nori, who has had a visual impairment since birth. Narrator has helped her pursue her passion for Japanese culture and public speaking. She’s a fan of using it to prepare for Japanese oratory competitions (which she has won five years in a row!). We’re grateful to have Nori in our Windows Insider program—her insights help us continue to develop tools to reflect the diverse needs of our customers. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/c5cd61049f6fa4f60a161e805335d5c9-1024x577.jpg Windows adapts to you. We fixed an issue resulting in the Korean IME sometimes entering duplicate characters when typing into text fields in certain websites in Microsoft Edge. You can now refresh the Books pane in Microsoft Edge using a pull gesture. When you pin books to Start from Microsoft Edge you will now see a live tile that cycles between the book cover and your current completion progress. When printing PDFs from Microsoft Edge, you’ll find a new option to choose the scale of your print out (Actual size, or Fit to page). We’ve updated Timeline so that in addition to seeing the number of available tabs to restore associated with a particular Sets activity, you can now cycle through them. We’ve made some adjustments to improve the quality of audio when recording clips using the game bar (WIN+G). Thanks, everyone who shared feedback about this – please take a moment to try it out in today’s build and let us know how it goes. We fixed an issue that could result in apps sometimes not fully maximizing to the top of the screen. We fixed an issue resulting in certain devices not being able to wake from sleep in the last two flights (just showed a black screen). When you hover over the leaf icon in Task Manager’s Status column, you will now see a tooltip describing what it means (this app is suspending processes to help improve system performance). Building on our work from Build 17639, in addition to showing Bluetooth battery level in Settings for supported devices, you will now see a notification when one of those devices is low on battery. For our WSL fans out there: if you’ve enabled WSL, you’ll now see an option to “Open Linux Shell here” when you Shift + Right-click on the whitespace of a File Explorer folder. We’ve introduced preview support for same-site cookies in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11. Known issues After completing the Windows Mixed Reality First Run experience, OOBE is black. Motion Controllers are also not recognized in exclusive apps. If you need your Mixed Reality experience to be working it is advised you not take this build until these issues are fixed. We’re aware of an issue that causes Narrator to read extra text when invoking Alt + Tab, and we’re working on a fix. If you complete the setup for a Windows Mixed Reality headset on this build, the headset will remain black until it is unplugged and reconnected to the PC. We’re making progress on our work to support dark theme in File Explorer and the Common File Dialog, and you’ll see improvements in this build, but we still have some work to do. Insiders who use Remote Desktop, project their screen, or have multiple monitors may experience explorer.exe hangs on this build. This issue can also lead to Microsoft Edge hangs. Known issues for Sets & Office Sets UX for Office Win32 desktop apps is not final. The experience will be refined over time based on feedback. The top of some Win32 desktop app windows may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when created maximized. To work around the issue, restore and re-maximize the window. Closing one tab may sometimes minimize the entire set. Tiling and cascading windows, including features like “View Side by Side” in Word, will not work for inactive tabs. The Office Visual Basic Editor window will currently be tabbed but is not intended to be in the future. Opening an Office document while the same app has an existing document open may cause an unintended switch to the last active document. This will also happen when closing a sheet in Excel while other sheets remain open. Local files or non-Microsoft cloud files will not be automatically restored, and no error message will be provided to alert the user to that fact. 9. I’m proud to announce that the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) has extended its digital transformation investment in Microsoft technologies through a transformative agreement worth potentially hundreds of millions of dollars over six years. This agreement expands the IC’s use of Microsoft products to now include Windows 10 and Microsoft’s Cloud for Government, including Office 365 for US Government and Azure Government, via a Joint Enterprise Licensing Agreement awarded to Dell Inc. Microsoft has longstanding relationships with the IC. With this agreement the community will now be able to leverage the full innovation of our complete Microsoft Cloud for Government platform for the first time. This agreement bolsters Microsoft’s position as a leading government cloud provider delivering advanced capabilities to further the IC’s national security mission, and we are deeply committed to continue to expand our support to serve the full spectrum of IC initiatives across all its agencies. The IC is responsible for handling some of the toughest problems facing the nation, harnessing the intelligence derived from the most sensitive data at unprecedented scale. This new agreement provides the IC with a vehicle for accessing the latest Microsoft technologies to further empower its agencies, optimize operations and modernize infrastructure. This agreement positions Microsoft to help the IC achieve its mission at home and around the world with a trusted cloud and modern workplace solution that keeps critical data secure, while delivering advanced capabilities including artificial intelligence, machine learning and large-scale data analysis. Microsoft is also unique in offering an end-to-end, government-only cloud platform across Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS), complete with modern collaboration and productivity tools. Through this latest agreement, the IC can leverage technology innovation, embracing interoperability and providing secure hyperscale cloud that extends to meet each of their 17 agencies right where they are. Over 10 million government customers from every federal cabinet level agency, including the Department of Defense, and multiple state and local governments rely on Microsoft’s Cloud for Government to help them move their modernization efforts forward. Examples of the potential innovations include: Advanced cyberthreat protection through Microsoft Cloud for Government’s billion-dollar security investment in cutting-edge security tools and services that deliver a comprehensive picture of an agency’s security posture and use them to proactively detect and remediate malicious activity. The power of deep learning across applications, through Microsoft’s AI solutions such as Cognitive Services. The ability to build on the Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities of Azure to bring advanced compute capabilities to the edge, giving them the ability to analyze and gain insight from data streams in near real-time to enhance decision making. Using Office 365 for US Government, employees can stay productive from anywhere, using virtually any device, with a seamless platform experience and leading capabilities for mobility, teamwork, analytics, accessibility and AI-driven search. To ensure world-class security, Azure Government’s eight geographically distributed, highly available government-only datacenter regions host no commercial data. Only U.S. federal, the Department of Defense (DoD), state and local governments and their partners have access to this dedicated instance of Azure operated by screened U.S. persons. Azure Government also offers the deepest built-in compliance on the market, maintaining more than 70 certifications, the most of any cloud provider at every level of government. Office 365 for US Government also supports U.S. federal security standards like both FEDRAMP Moderate and High, as well as industry regulations like CJIS in law enforcement, FERPA in education, or HIPAA in healthcare, along with many others. We’re committed to meeting the needs of the full spectrum of government. We will continue to expand our trusted government cloud offerings to deliver the latest emerging commercial technology innovation to empower the public sector to achieve its mission. 10. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are pleased to release a new build of the Windows Server vNext Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release that contains both the Desktop Experience as well as Server Core in all 18 server languages, as well as a new build of the next Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel release. There are two major areas that we would like you to try out in each preview release and report back any issues: In-place OS Upgrade (from Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016) Application compatibility – please let us know if any server roles or applications stops working or fails to function as it used to What’s New in the Latest Build Click here to see the full list of new features introduced in earlier builds. Performance history for Storage Spaces Direct This build improves the Get-ClusterPerformanceHistory cmdlet to be more scripting-friendly. It’s now convenient to pipe performance history into utility cmdlets like Sort-Object, Where-Object, and Measure-Object so you can quickly find the average or peak value, filter values, plot trend lines, run outlier detection, and more. You can see examples with these cmdlets in the topics linked under “Insider Preview content” on aka.ms/StorageSpacesDirect. This build adds performance history for the Storage Spaces Direct cache for reads (% hit rate) and writes (% full), as well as the CSV in-memory read cache (% hit rate). These new series are available per-server and in aggregate. Some performance history series have changed names in this build for greater clarity and consistency—for example, Node.Cpu.Usage is now ClusterNode.Cpu.Usage. Note that this change will result in some blank charts in Windows Admin Center until its next update. Delimit volume allocation with Storage Spaces Direct New cmdlets, provided in this build, simplify the management of volumes with delimited allocation. Use Get-StorageScaleUnit to see fault domains; follow associations to/from Get-VirtualDisk to see the current allocation; and set or modify allocation by using friendly names for fault domains. For more details, see the links under “Insider Preview content” on aka.ms/StorageSpacesDirect. Available Content Windows Server 2019 Preview is available in ISO format in 18 languages, and in VHDX format in English only. This build and all future pre-release builds will require the use of activation keys during setup. The following keys allow for unlimited activations: Datacenter Edition 6XBNX-4JQGW-QX6QG-74P76-72V67 Standard Edition MFY9F-XBN2F-TYFMP-CCV49-RMYVH Windows Server vNext Semi-Annual Preview The Server Core Edition is available in English only, in ISO or VHDX format. The images are pre-keyed – no need to enter a key during setup. Symbols are available on the public symbol server – see Update on Microsoft’s Symbol Server blog post and Using the Microsoft Symbol Server. As before, matching Windows Server container images will be available via Docker Hub. For more information about Windows Server containers and Insider builds, click here. This build will expire December 14th, 2018. How to Download To obtain the Insider software downloads, registered Insiders may navigate directly to the Windows Server Insider Preview download page. If you have not yet registered as an Insider, see GETTING STARTED WITH SERVER on the Windows Insiders for Business portal. We value your feedback! Use your registered Windows 10 Insider device and use the Feedback Hub application. In the app, choose the Server category and then the appropriate subcategory for your feedback. Please indicate what build number you are providing feedback on. We also encourage you to visit the Windows Server Insiders space on the Microsoft Tech Communities forum to collaborate, share and learn from experts. Known Issues The size of a file according to NTFS and a stream control block can become different from the size according to Cache Manager. This might cause a bug check if a read operation is out of bounds for the file size that Cache Manager has stored. Inplace OS upgrade: Domain Controllers. During an in-place OS upgrade, Active Directory (AD) Domain Controllers (DC) might not be upgraded correctly. So, back up any AD DCs before performing an in-place OS upgrade. Editing or creating policies for AppLocker can cause the MMC snap-in to crash when generated rules for a packaged app. After upgrading the operating system, the AppX database may have corrupted entries, which causes problems for components that use those entries. Terms of Use This is pre-release software – it is provided for use “as-is” and is not supported in production environments. Users are responsible for installing any updates made available from Windows Update for as long as this build is available All pre-release software made available to you via the Windows Server Insider Program are governed by the Insider Terms of Use, which takes precedence over any license agreement that may be in the product. 15. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17666 (RS5) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring in addition to those who opted in to Skip Ahead. What’s new in Build 17666 The next wave of Sets improvements is here! We’ve been steadily going through your feedback, and this build contains a number of improvements based on what you’ve been telling us: Bring on the acrylic! We love Fluent Design as much as you do – in today’s build you’ll find that Sets now have an acrylic title bar. We’re also adjusting the window border so that it’s now grey. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/ff9c4d130affd8d3f031205338db2640-1024x473.png Recent Microsoft Edge tabs now show in Alt + Tab: Do you use Alt + Tab to quickly switch back and forth between apps? All of your recent Microsoft Edge tabs will now be included, not just the active one. Prefer it the old way? Use the “Pressing Alt + Tab shows the recently used…” setting in Multitasking Settings. Should apps and websites open in a new window or a new tab? It’s up to you! The Sets section of Multitasking Settings now lets you set your windowing preference. If you choose “Window”, new windows won’t open into a new tab unless you explicitly click the + or drag with your mouse. Choosing “Tab” opens any new windows invoked from your running apps into tabs. As a reminder, if you would like to exclude any particular app from Sets, you can do this from this same settings page. Want to mute one of your web tabs? You can now do that! When a webpage in Sets starts playing audio, you’ll now see a volume icon on the tab. Simply click it and the audio will mute, just like in Microsoft Edge. Tabs will now restore with better performance – they’ll open in the background and use no resources until you go to the tab. This means you can restore a lot of tabs at once with no issues. We’ve also made other fixes, changes, and improvements to Sets, including: Task Manager has now been added by default to the list of apps where not to enable Sets. We fixed an issue where right clicking a tab in the Sets title bar didn’t bring up a context menu. We fixed an issue where if Microsoft Edge wasn’t already open, clicking the plus button in Sets would open all of your default websites along with the new tab page. As always, thanks again for the great feedback – keep it coming! This link will take you to the Sets section of the Feedback Hub. Say hello to your new clipboard experience! Copy paste – it’s something we all do, probably multiple times a day. But what do you do if you need to copy the same few things again and again? How do you copy content across your devices? Today we’re addressing that and taking the clipboard to the next level – simply press WIN+V and you’ll be presented with our brand-new clipboard experience! https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/751ff4939fd18023822297dc69bf5c5a.png Not only can you can paste from the clipboard history, but you can also pin the items you find yourself using all the time. This history is roamed using the same technology which powers Timeline and Sets, which means you can access your clipboard across any PC with this build of Windows or higher. Our new settings page for enabling this experience is under Settings > System > Clipboard – please try this out and share feedback! This link will open the Feedback Hub to where you can tell us about your experience and what you’d like to see next. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/22f3cf17de3c09c018b87a11b5424f5f-1024x792.png Note: Roamed text on the clipboard is only supported for clipboard content less than 100kb. Currently, the clipboard history supports plain text, HTML and image less than 1MB. Dark theme comes to File Explorer (and more!) As many of you know, we added dark theme support to Windows based on your feedback. This setting is available under Settings > Personalization > Colors, and if you switch it any apps and system UI that support it will follow suit. Since releasing this feature, our top feedback request from you has been to update File Explorer to support dark theme, and with today’s build it’s happening! Along the way, we also added dark theme support to the File Explorer context menu, as well as the Common File Dialog (aka the Open and Save dialogs). Thanks again for everyone’s feedback! This screenshot below is from the very latest code and not what’s in the flight. When you install this build, you will see some unexpected light colors in File Explorer and the Common File Dialog. This is something we’re aware of and are working to address. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/3b996c4660e65aa63878506b6c547aa1-1024x640.png Introducing extended line endings support for Notepad Announced at Microsoft Build 2018, we’re excited to let you know that in addition to Windows line endings (CRLF), with today’s build Notepad now supports Unix/Linux line endings (LF) and Macintosh line endings (CR)! https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/9bedd8b678eba829bfc177fe1fcc4553-1024x551.png For more details, check out the command line blog. When you expand the folder, you’ll see a new option to name it. The name will be visible when the folder is medium, wide, or large-sized. We appreciate everyone’s feedback requesting this! Alt text: showing a named folder in Start Have a question about Settings? We’ve heard your feedback that settings can be confusing sometimes, so we’re working with Bing to bubble up some of the most common questions we hear right into the Settings pages themselves. The FAQ’s are contextual in nature and aim to you to quickly get the answer you’re looking for to complete configuration tasks. It may even help you discover something you didn’t know was an option! Clicking on these questions will take you to Bing.com to display the answer. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/91aa51b4a1c1bf92348250cdbab4d1cb-1024x792.png NOTE: Currently this experience is supported in all en* markets (en-us, en-gb, en-ca, en-in, en-au). Your phone and computer have made a new connection From this week’s Build keynotes and Joe Belfiore’s blogpost on Microsoft 365, you may have seen what we’ve got instore for you in a future Insider Preview build release. There’s a new way to connect your phone to your PC with Windows 10 that enables instant access to text messages, photos, and notifications. Imagine being able to quickly drag and drop your phone’s photos into a document on your PC in one swift movement – without having to take your phone out of your pocket. Today, this experience allows you to link your phone to your PC. Surf the web on your phone, then send the webpage instantly to your PC to pick up where you left off to continue what you’re doing–read, watch, or browse with all the benefits of a bigger screen. With a linked phone, continuing on your PC is one share away. We’re working hard to expand these experiences so check back here for updates. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed an issue with dll from the previous flight that could result in explorer.exe crashing every few minutes. We fixed an issue resulting in VPN potentially not working after updating to the previous build. We fixed an issue from the previous build where apps may appear to be missing in secondary accounts after receiving app updates from the PC’s primary account. We fixed an issue from the previous flight resulting in a bugcheck with the error IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL in tcpip.sys. We fixed an issue where a border would be visible when you maximized windows in the last few flights. We’ve updated the design of This PC so that there’s no longer space displayed for the cloud files state icon (which isn’t relevant on this page). The snipping toolbar (with WIN + Shift + S) will now follow your desired theme, light or dark. We fixed an issue that could result in the Emoji Panel and the touch keyboard not displaying correctly if invoked immediately after restarting explorer.exe. Known issues After completing the Windows Mixed Reality First Run experience, OOBE is black. Motion Controllers are also not recognized in exclusive apps. If you need your Mixed Reality experience to be working it is advised you not take this build until these issues are fixed. On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected. When Movies & TV user denies access to its videos library (through the “Let Movies & TV access your videos library?” popup window or through Windows privacy settings), Movies & TV crashes when the user navigates to the “Personal” tab. We’re aware of an issue that causes Narrator to read extra text when invoking Alt + Tab, and we’re working on a fix. If you complete the setup for a Windows Mixed Reality headset on this build, the headset will remain black until it is unplugged and reconnected to the PC. 18. The world is a computer, filled with an incredible amount of data. By 2020, the average person will generate 1.5GB of data a day, a smart home 50GB and a smart city, a whopping 250 petabytes of data per day. This data presents an enormous opportunity for developers — giving them a seat of power, while also giving them tremendous responsibility. That’s why this morning at Build, we don’t take our jobs lightly in helping to equip these developers with the tools and guidance to change the world. On stage in Seattle, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is describing this new world view, fueled by AI that can power better health care, relieve challenges around basic human needs and create a society that’s more inclusive and accessible. Helping create a better, safer, more just world is a responsibility we take seriously at Microsoft. We’ve always been committed to the ethical creation and use of technology. As AI increasingly becomes part of our lives, Microsoft’s commitment to advancing human good has never been stronger. Today, we’re announcing AI for Accessibility, a new $25 million, five-year program aimed at harnessing the power of AI to amplify human capability for the more than one billion people around the world with disabilities. AI for Accessibility is a call to action for developers, NGOs, academics, researchers and inventors to accelerate their work for people with disabilities, focusing on three areas: employment, human connection and modern life. It includes grants, technology and AI expertise to accelerate the development of accessible and intelligent AI solutions and builds on recent advancements in Azure Cognitive Services to help developers create intelligent apps that can empower people with hearing, vision and other disabilities. Real-time speech-to-text transcription, visual recognition services and predictive text functionality that suggests words as people type are just a few examples. We’ve seen this impact through the launch of and alt-text which empowers people who are blind or low vision; as well as , which helps people with autism. If AI is the heart of how we can advance society, the intelligent cloud and the intelligent edge are the backbone. In the next 10 years, billions of everyday devices will be connected — smart devices that can see, listen, reason, predict and more, without a 24/7 dependence on the cloud. This is the intelligent edge, and it is the interface between the computer and the real world. The edge takes AI and cloud together to collect and make sense of new information, especially in scenarios that are too dangerous for humans or require new approaches to solve, whether they be on the factory floor or in the operating room. Today we’re giving developers the tools and guidance to build these possibilities. For example, we’re making it easier to build apps at the edge by open sourcing the Azure IoT Edge Runtime, allowing customers to modify the runtime and customize applications at the edge. We’re giving developers Custom Vision — the first Azure Cognitive Service available for the edge — to build applications that use powerful AI algorithms that interpret, listen, speak and see for edge devices. And we are partnering across both DJI and Qualcomm. Microsoft and DJI, the world’s largest drone company, will collaborate to develop commercial drone solutions so that developers in key vertical segments such as agriculture, construction and public safety can build life-changing solutions, like applications that can help farmers produce more crops. With Qualcomm Technologies Inc., we announced a joint effort to create a vision AI dev kit running Azure IoT Edge, for camera-based IoT solutions. The camera can power advanced Azure services like machine learning and cognitive services that can be downloaded from Azure and run locally on the edge. Other advancements include a preview of Project Brainwave, an architecture for deep neural net processing, that is now available on Azure and on the edge. Project Brainwave makes Azure the fastest cloud to run real-time AI today. We are also releasing new Azure Cognitive Services updates such as a unified Speech service that makes it easier for developers to add speech recognition, text-to-speech, customized voice models and translation to their applications. In addition, we’re making Azure the best place to develop conversational AI experiences integrated with any agent. New updates to Bot Framework, combined with our new Cognitive Services updates, will power the next generation of conversational bots, enabling richer dialogs and full personality and voice customization to match a company’s brand identity. It was eight years ago when we shipped Kinect, which was the first AI device with speech, gaze and vision. We then took that technology forward with Microsoft HoloLens. We’ve seen developers build transformative solutions across a multitude of industries, from security to manufacturing to health care and more. As sensor technology has evolved, we see incredible possibilities for combining these sensors with the power of Azure AI services such as machine learning, Cognitive Services and IoT Edge. Today we are excited to announce a new initiative, Project Kinect for Azure — a package of sensors from Microsoft that contains our unmatched time-of-flight depth camera, with onboard compute, in a small, power-efficient form factor — designed for AI on the edge. Project Kinect for Azure brings together this leading hardware technology with Azure AI to empower developers with new scenarios for working with ambient intelligence. Similarly, our Speech Devices software development kit announced today delivers superior audio processing from multi-channel sources for more accurate speech recognition, including noise cancellation, far-field voice and more. With this SDK, developers can build for a variety of voice-enabled scenarios like drive-thru ordering systems, in-car or in-home assistants, smart speakers and other digital assistants. This new age of technology is also fueled by mixed reality, which is opening up new possibilities in the workplace. Today we announced two new apps that will help empower firstline workers, the first workers to interface with customers and triage problems: Microsoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout. Microsoft Remote Assist enables remote collaboration via hands-free video calling, letting firstline workers share what they see with any expert on Microsoft Teams, while staying hands on to solve problems and complete tasks together. In a similar vein, Microsoft Layout lets workers design spaces in context with mixed reality, using 3D models for creating room layouts with holograms. Whether creating a more inclusive and accessible world, solving problems that plague humanity or helping improve the way we work and live, developers are playing a leading role. As new ideas and solutions with AI and intelligent edge emerge, Microsoft will continue to advocate for developers and give them the tools and cloud services that make it possible to build these new solutions to solve real problems. From the top down, we are a developer-led company that continues to invest in coders and give them free rein to solve problems. Learn more about how we’re empowering developers to build for this future today using Azure and M365, via blog posts from Executive Vice President of Cloud + AI Scott Guthrie and Corporate Vice President of Windows Joe Belfiore. 19. In the world of connected things, devices are getting more powerful. Advances in silicon, memory, and cloud technologies including machine learning and artificial intelligence are enabling devices to do more at the edge. These advances will expand use cases in manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and many other industries where an intelligent edge will unlock the power of the intelligent cloud in new ways. Today, we are excited to announce a Windows AI Platform-enabled solution to put this power in the hands of every developer. In the next update to Windows 10, the Windows AI Platform with Azure Machine Learning together with Azure IoT Edge will bring hardware-accelerated machine learning model evaluation on the edge. By using instruction set optimizations on modern CPUs, hardware acceleration on GPUs that support DirectX 12, and a driver model for purpose-built AI processors in the future, the Windows AI Platform will deliver performance and efficiency on the broadest range of form factors. At Microsoft Build 2018, we are showcasing this through a powerful demonstration. Imagine a production line in a steel factory equipped with cameras that can capture every square inch of steel passing through the line. Using traditional image processing techniques, it’s difficult to process and analyze this information, derive insights, and take actions in a timely and affordable manner. Using the Windows AI Platform available on every Windows 10 device, the machine learning model on the device will process the images at the edge and can detect anomalies on the steel surface instantaneously. With Azure IoT Edge, the device can be configured to send alerts or take a corrective action. With Azure Machine Learning, the ML model will be retrained and redeployed easily and quickly across devices. Such a deployment will enable a truly intelligent edge with hardware that is already available in market on a Windows 10 device with Direct X12 GPU. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/c56d7124e0d612ba3f9267a521a62552-1024x453.jpg Windows AI Platform powering edge solution at a steel factory. At EmbeddedWorld2018, Microsoft announced 10 years of security updates and an expanded offering of long-life silicon for Windows 10 IoT Core. In close collaboration with NXP, we have begun a private preview of Windows 10 IoT Core on NXP i.MX 6 and i.MX 7 processors. Today, we are announcing that Microsoft and NXP will release commercial support for IoT Core with i.MX6 and i.MX7 with the next release of IoT Core. 20. Hey everyone! I am quite excited to share today’s blog. This morning I will be joining Satya Nadella at day one of Microsoft Build 2018 to announce two new apps coming to Microsoft HoloLens customers as a limited-time free preview starting May 22 — Microsoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout. Last year I had the chance to speak at Future Decoded and talk about our vision for mixed reality in the modern workplace. In particular, I talked about expanding our focus from Information Workers to include Firstline Workers. Firstline Workers in any company are the first to the customer and the first to the problem. This includes people who primarily interact with customers, as well as people who create and operate products, machines, and spaces and who need to move around and use their hands to do their work. We learn so much from others who are using what we create early on. Customer feedback is our most important development tool. Over the past two years since we started shipping HoloLens, we’ve been paying attention to the highest value workflows that cut across a variety of Firstline industries. In close partnership with hundreds of customers, we discovered that the highest value workflows are around remote assistance, space planning, training and development, product development collaboration, and access to spatial data from IoT devices. Over the past several months, our team has been working hard to develop and deliver applications that will empower Firstline Workers to achieve more. It’s my privilege on behalf of everyone on our team to introduce you to Microsoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout, coming as a limited-time free preview for existing HoloLens customers starting May 22. To learn more about how you can participate in the limited-time free preview starting May 22, please visit us here. Microsoft Remote Assist — Collaborate in mixed reality to solve problems faster With Microsoft Remote Assist we set out to create a HoloLens app that would help our customers collaborate remotely with heads-up, hands-free video calling, image sharing, and mixed-reality annotations. During the design process, we spent a lot of time with Firstline Workers. We asked ourselves, “How can we help Firstline Workers share what they see with an expert while staying hands-on to solve problems and complete tasks together, faster.” It was important to us that Firstline Workers are able to reach experts on whatever device they are using at the time, including PCs, phones, or tablets. Our work led us to focus on three capabilities. Collaborate with shared perspective With video calling, made possible using Microsoft Teams, image sharing, and mixed-reality annotations, Firstline Workers can share what they see and collaborate with experts remotely. Workers and experts can annotate their shared view with mixed-reality ink and arrows, or insert images into their view, to pinpoint and solve problems efficiently. Communicate securely The ability to control access to remote communications with industry-leading identity and security measures. With Azure Active Directory login and Mobile Device Management, Firstline Workers and experts can focus with peace of mind on what matters most. Increase efficiency With mixed-reality annotations, live streaming, and video capture, we can enable Firstline Workers and experts to identify and address issues accurately the first time. This can help customers eliminate travel and expedite troubleshooting, increasing employees’ efficiency. Here is a peek into what Microsoft Remote Assist will make possible. Microsoft Layout — Design spaces in context with mixed reality With Microsoft Layout our goal was to build an app that would help people use HoloLens to bring designs from concept to completion using some of the superpowers mixed reality makes possible. With Microsoft Layout customers can import 3-D models to easily create and edit room layouts in real-world scale. Further, you can experience designs as high-quality holograms in physical space or in virtual reality and share and edit with stakeholders in real time. With Microsoft Layout we wanted to help customers see ideas in context, saving valuable time and money. Here is a peek into what Microsoft Layout makes possible. We want to make sure you have what you need to prepare for the limited-time free preview of Remote Assist and Layout when they are released on May 22. To make sure your roll-out is smooth and seamless, additional information, such as device requirements, technical requirements, and network requirements can be found here. As excited as we are about these apps, there is nothing more important than seeing how our customers and partners are using them. The workplace is changing now more than ever. While we live in a world where technology is everywhere, many people don’t have information where they need it most: in the real-world context of their work. Today, as part of our presentation I was able to showcase how ZF Group, a German car-parts manufacturer headquartered in Friedrichshafen, is using Microsoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout on its factory floor. An early partner on our journey, it has been working with us over the past few months to help ensure these apps, even in preview, are crafted with insights from those who will be using them daily to get their work done. Here’s a look into how ZF Group has been using Remote Assist and Layout over the past couple of months. World-sensing devices will use spatial analytics to make data more valuable Finally, we talked about the empowerment that comes from world-sensing devices that can provide invaluable spatial data and context for physical workflows that matter most. These environments are an untapped opportunity for getting work done more effectively. We’re taking this further by making sure this class of data will have enterprise-grade manageability and extensibility that integrates with existing applications and processes. One of our earliest HoloLens partners, thyssenkrupp, is leveraging this work now to discover insights that will make it easier for its employees to complete some of their most important tasks. Here is a look into the work our friends at thyssenkrupp are doing to leverage spatial analytics. We will have a lot more to share in the coming weeks and months. Soon you will hear us share more on how we are going to help with training and development and collaboration on product design and prototyping. Our team loves doing work that really makes a difference for our customers! And a reminder — if you want to be a part of the preview for Microsoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout, please visit us here. As always, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter to share what you are doing with mixed reality. Talk soon! 22. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17661 (RS5) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring in addition to those who opted in to Skip Ahead. Going forward, Insiders in the Fast ring and in Skip Ahead will receive the same RS5 builds. What’s new in Build 17661 A modern snipping experience Today we’re taking the first step toward converging our snipping experiences. The new modern snipping experience is here to help you effortlessly capture and annotate what you see on your screen. While working on this we’ve been carefully going over all your feedback about taking screenshots in Windows – you’ll find the flow and tools are optimized for sharing and make communicating visually with others quick and easy. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/8a6dafce2c43d574ff6e7ea9caa8a980-1024x683.png What to expect once you update to this build: Screen Sketch is now an app! Originally introduced as part of the Windows Ink Workspace, this comes with a variety of benefits, including that it can now be updated via the Microsoft Store, it will now show up in the list when you press Alt + tab, you can set the window size to be your preference if you like multitasking, and it even supports multiple windows (and tabs, thanks to Sets!). Easy snipping is only a single step away. One of the loudest things we heard is that you want to be able to quickly snip & share a screenshot, and we’re making it happen! WIN + Shift + S will now bring up a snipping toolbar – snip a rectangle, something a bit more freeform, or full screen and it will go straight to your clipboard. If that’s all you need, you can take it from there. Want more, though? Immediately after taking a snip you’ll now get a notification that will take you and your snip to the Screen Sketch app where you can annotate and share away! https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/6456138a418b5046eae40f4bc4a673d3.gif ALT-TEXT: Immediately after taking a snip you’ll now get a notification that will take you and your snip to the Screen Sketch app where you can annotate and share away! But wait, there’s more! Is the WIN + Shift + S keyboard shortcut too long to remember? Guess what! We’ve added easy entry options for every input modality: Just click the pen tail button. If you have a pen, go into Pen & Windows Ink Settings – you’ll find Screen Snipping is now an option for single click. This will launch you directly into our snipping experience: https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/a6fec44b2e12f915c14ce8b007b1dcfc-1024x707.png Press Print Screen. You heard it right, just one button! It’s not enabled by default – go to Keyboard Settings – you’ll see a new option that says “Use the Print Screen key to launch screen snipping”. Opening Settings and searching for “print screen” will take you to the right page. Press the quick action button in Action Center. Called “Screen snip” – it should be there as soon as you upgrade, but if not you can always enable it via Notifications & Actions Settings. We’re looking for feedback! Tell us what you want to see next via the Feedback Hub under Apps > Screen Sketch – just click the ellipsis in the Screen Sketch app and it will take you straight there. NOTE: After installing this build, please check the Microsoft Store for Screen Sketch app updates. You will need an updated version to receive the ability to crop screenshots. Continuing the Sets Experiment For the last few weeks, we have made the Sets experiment available to all Windows Insiders who have opted in to Skip Ahead. Now that the Fast ring and Skip Ahead are merging back together and will be receiving the same RS5 builds, we are going to continue with the controlled study just like we did back in December. This means that not all Insiders will see Sets. Insiders who were opted into Skip Ahead who had Sets previously will continue to have Sets. However, unlike the controlled study we did in December, the large majority of Insiders in the Fast ring will see Sets and a smaller group won’t. More Fluent Design: Introducing acrylic in Task View We’ve heard you like acrylic! We like it too – when you update to this build you’ll find that the entire Task View background now has a soft blur effect. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/211e9577bf0ea12596569439352058fa-1024x683.png Windows Security improvements Windows Defender Security Center is now called Windows Security. You can still get to the app in all the usual ways – simply ask Cortana to open Windows Security or interact with the taskbar icon. Windows Security lets you manage all your security needs, including Windows Defender Antivirus and Windows Defender Firewall. We’re also bringing some changes to how we present threats and actions that need your attention, and we’re continuing to refine that over the coming months. Focus assist improvements when gaming Now Focus assist will turn on automatically when you’re playing any full screen game. No more interruptions when you’re crushing it. This behavior should be turned on automatically, but you can always check by going to Settings > System > Focus assist and ensuring the “When I’m playing a game” automatic rule is enabled. Continuing our Sound Settings migration Consolidating our settings experiences is an ongoing priority for us. We started our work moving Sound settings to Settings with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, and we’re happy to announce the next piece of that with today’s flight. Device properties has now been integrated into Settings – just click on the links in Sound Settings and you’ll find a new page where you can name your device and select your preferred spatial audio format. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/21e46d4ba929c668423999b922237b38-1024x707.png Taking the Microsoft Pinyin and Wubi IMEs to the next level Do you write in Chinese (Simplified)? We’re updating the Microsoft Pinyin IME! We’ve been focusing on addressing your performance, reliability and compatibility feedback. You’ll also notice a number of other improvements, including: Design improvements – a new logo (for the Microsoft Pinyin IME), new IME toolbar, and dark theme support! https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/3d1d60e4dab1490243aba30e62ae44e4.png An updated context menu. We’ve added a bunch of options to the IME mode indicator’s context menu in the taskbar, so you can quickly access the things you need. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/42722f955df327b5cdb54f773a747b81.png The IME now uses the same UX for Expressive Input as other languages. You can bring it up by clicking the emoji button in the IME toolbar, or use the Emoji Panel hotkeys (WIN + period (.) or WIN + semicolon (;)). You can browse between Emoji, Kaomoji, and Symbol input when Chinese (Simplified) is the active locale. https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/3970260ddb1b42d56697142ff7d83e5d-1024x349.png We’d love to hear what you think of this new experience – this link will take you to the Feedback Hub where you can share your thoughts. Improving HEIC support We announced support for the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17623. We are happy to announce that in build 17661 you can now rotate HEIF-format images in File Explorer, and edit metadata, such as “Date taken”. The new functionality requires the latest version of the HEIF package. The latest version will be installed automatically be the Store. If automatic updates are disabled you can download the HEIF package manually using this link. HEIF files use the HEVC video codec to compress the image into approximately half the size of JPEG. If your Windows PC does not already have the HEVC video codec, it can be purchased from the Windows Store using this link. To rotate a HEIF image file, simply right-click on it in File Explorer and select “Rotate right” or “Rotate left” from the menu. “Date taken” and other properties can be edited by clicking on “Properties” and selecting the “Details” tab. Please stay tuned for additional functionality related to the HEIF file format in future Windows 10 Insider Preview builds! https://blogs.windows.com/uploads/mswbprod/sites/2/2018/05/5e0c764672e9d26397ea3c34e59cba79-1024x898.png General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We’ve made a number of improvements to how Narrator communicates the use of Sets – for example, Narrator will now inform you of the tabs by reading information such as Tab # N of M as you open and move between tabs. If you’re a Narrator user, please take a moment to try out Sets with today’s build and share feedback about the experience. When you clean install or do a PC refresh, you’ll find that the Out of Box Experience for setting up your PC now includes a page for enabling activity history sync, which will help you continue what you were doing, even when you switch devices. We’ve adjusted how you access skin tones in the Emoji Panel – you’ll now see a row of skin tone colors to select from when people emoji are in view. We fixed an issue where using arrow and Page Up / Page Down keys didn’t work to scroll webpages in Microsoft Edge. We fixed an issue resulting in the mouse cursor becoming invisible when hovering over certain UI elements and text fields in the last two flights. We fixed an issue resulting in the mouse cursor not animating correctly in the last two flights. We fixed an issue resulting in the Game Bar not appearing for some Insiders after pressing WIN+G. When you hover over the Windows icon in the taskbar, a tooltip will now appear for Start. We’ve updated the design of the handwriting panel so that the delete button is now a top level button. The button to switch languages is now under the “…” menu. If you go to Pen & Windows Ink Settings, you’ll find a new option that allows your pen to behave like a mouse instead of scrolling or panning the screen. Known issues Certain notifications from Action Center may cause regular Explorer.exe crashes. We’re working to get this fixed in the next flight. VPN may not be working after updating to this build. To get VPN working again, delete the %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Network\Connections\pbk* directories. Check if the VPN profile you need shows up already and if not, reinstall the appropriate VPN client app you need. After updating to this build and installing the latest app updates from the Microsoft Store, when you log in to additional user accounts on the PC there may be missing apps. You can run the following PowerShell script when logged in to users with missing apps on your PC to fix the issue: Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”} On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected. Right-clicking a tab in Sets will not bring up a context menu in this build. Local files or non-Microsoft cloud files will not be automatically restored, and no error message will be provided to alert the user to that fact. 25. Last year, M12, Microsoft’s venture fund (formerly known as Microsoft Ventures), set out on a mission to uncover the most innovative startups harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform businesses and solve real-world challenges. Together with Madrona Venture Group, Notion and Vertex Ventures, we put a combined $3.5 million in investment funding on the line to kick off Innovate.AI, a global startup competition that would drive progress in AI and further Microsoft’s commitment to making AI accessible for all. Six months later, we’re overwhelmed with the response. Not only did we receive hundreds of submissions, the companies were all innovative, impactful and inspiring. In healthcare, startups are utilizing AI to create personal and mental health assistants, conduct drug research and diagnosis as well as spot patterns and abnormalities. In retail, computer vision is used to automatically recognize and tag items in images and video, enhance advertising and optimize shopping experiences. In financial services, machine learning is fueling research summaries and insights that investment professionals can use to invest smarter and faster. In human resources, AI is helping to understand people’s strengths, skills and networks and properly match them with jobs and schools. The number of use cases across industries is endless. For more than 25 years, Microsoft has worked to advance transformative power of AI, believing in its ability to accelerate human ingenuity and solve some of society’s most pressing challenges. The hundreds of startups that applied to Innovate.AI make it clear that the next generation of innovators is realizing this vision in ways we never could have imagined, and we can’t wait to help drive the progress. Today, I am thrilled to share that after narrowing it down to 34 finalists, we have selected the four winners for the Innovate.AI competition. Most importantly, I wanted to share a little bit about the stories behind their successes: AI AT THE FOREFRONT OF SCIENCE AND MEDICINE Company: Envisagenics Region: North America VC partner: Madrona Venture Group More than 30 million people in the U.S. are living with cancer and/or a genetic disease. By integrating ribonucleic acid (RNA) splicing analytics and AI, Envisagenics aims to unlock previously inaccessible cures for hundreds of diseases caused by splicing errors. Envisagenics is a biotechnology company that applies AI to the genetic sequence of patients to discover new therapies. The company focuses on RNA splicing, a cellular process occurring in every cell that “edits” RNA to produce functional proteins required for our body to work. Its proprietary cloud-based discovery platform, SpliceCoreTM, uses machine learning to prioritize new drug target candidates from patients’ RNA, our genetic blueprint. Photo courtesy of Envisagenics WHERE THE CITIZEN’S VOICE IS HEARD Company: ZenCity Region: Israel VC partner: Vertex Ventures One of the most important measures of a city’s performance is through the feedback of its citizens. Yet many current planning and performance solutions for city officials today are done manually and only capture partial data. These solutions are often costly and limited to anecdotal results. To solve this challenge, ZenCity has built an innovative application that uses AI to analyze data from hundreds of thousands of public interactions on social media, city hotlines and other communication channels to surface sentiment trends in real time. The application provides an accurate citizen pulse on how they are viewing the city. City officials can interpret this data to drive more informed decisions that improve the lives of its people. Photo courtesy of ZenCity ANONYMIZING DATA WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Company: Hazy Region: Europe VC partner: Notion With data privacy concerns on the rise, more and more companies are looking for partners that can help them achieve the new European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance by anonymizing their data. Hazy is working to make this a reality. Using any arbitrary structured data source (e.g. a database or stream of data), Hazy leverages deep learning algorithms with topological data analysis and knowledge representation technologies to accurately identify and classify personal and sensitive information, while providing a human-like understanding of the data. Learn more about Hazy. https://blogs.microsoft.com/uploads/prod/2018/05/HAZY.jpeg From left, CTO James Arthur, CEO and cofounder Harry Keen and Dr. Fintan Nagle of Hazy. Photo courtesy of Hazy Each of these winners will receive a combined $1 million investment from M12 and our regional VC partners and up to $500,000 each in Microsoft Azure credits and prizes. MAKING SPEECH RECOGNITION ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE Company: Voiceitt Region: Israel Alongside the above regional investments, M12 separately selected an “AI for Good” winner for best using AI in a way that positively impacts society. Voiceitt, which shares our commitment to making technology accessible for all, will receive $500,000 in VC funds from M12 and up to $500K in Azure credits and prizes. Most of people take for granted the ability to verbally communicate feelings, ideas and desires. Yet diseases like cerebral palsy, autism, stroke, ALS and Parkinson’s prevent more than 100 million people around the world from communicating naturally using their voices. Voiceitt’s mission is to make voice recognition technology available to everyone. Through a hybrid of unique statistical modeling and machine learning technologies in Microsoft Azure, Voiceitt will enable tens of millions of people to overcome communication barriers and help them connect with the world. Voiceitt is building speech recognition technology designed to understand non-standard and dysarthric speech. The company’s core mobile application — already in closed beta testing — is a hands-free voice recognition app that enables face-to-face, real-time communication with friends, family, and strangers. In addition, the technology is designed for integration into smart homes, assistive and augmentative communications devices, and smart speakers. Learn more about Voiceitt. https://blogs.microsoft.com/uploads/prod/2018/05/Voiceitt-1024x683.jpg Members of the Voiceitt team. Photo courtesy of Voiceitt Thank you, everyone, who shared your story with us. We continue to be inspired by how AI is being used to change the way we work, play and live and are looking forward to working with Envisagenics, ZenCity, Hazy and Voiceitt to continue driving the next wave of transformation.
