  1. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17639 (RS5) to Windows Insiders who have opted into Skip Ahead. What’s new in Build 17639 The next wave of Sets improvements is here What belongs together stays together – we designed Sets to help you keep webpages, documents, files, and apps connected. We’ve been hard at work since our first wave of Sets improvements for RS5, and when you install today’s build you’ll find: Drag and drop app tabs within and between Sets windows is now supported: It works just like it sounds! You can now drag an app tab around within the Set or combine tabbed app windows into Sets. Note: If you open a Microsoft Edge tab outside of a Set, you can’t drag and drop it into a Sets window. Drag and drop for Microsoft Edge web tabs within Sets isn’t supported yet and you may experience a crash if this is attempted. Tabs are now bubbled up in Alt + Tab: Have Photos, Microsoft Edge, and OneNote tabbed together? You can now use Alt + Tab to switch between them. Prefer to only show the primary window in Alt + Tab? There’s a new setting – more on that in just a moment… Note: If you have multiple Microsoft Edge windows in a Set, only the one most recently accessed will be visible in Alt + Tab. Improved Settings for Sets: We’ve updated the Settings for Sets via Settings > System > Multitasking. To start with, Sets now has its own section on this page, and is searchable (try typing “Sets” or “tabs” and it will appear in the dropdown). We’ve also added a setting to control the Alt + Tab behavior mentioned above. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/sites/2/2018/04/c4994b2064fe0fb2607716763e09e80b-1024x778.png File Explorer & Sets Improvements: We’ve heard your feedback – you’d like it to be easier to get two File Explorer windows grouped together, and we’re working on it. To start with, you no longer need to hold CTRL on the new tab page to launch a File Explorer window in a tab (this was a temporary necessity with the last wave). We’ve also added a new keyboard shortcut to open a new tab when a File Explorer window is in focus: Ctrl + T. Remember, you can use Ctrl + N to open a new window, and Ctrl + W to close the window/tab. Finally, we’ve added some new UI for easily opening new tabs and windows in the File Menu. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/sites/2/2018/04/dfeddb930f52eb001a00454d5a2db68b-1024x676.png And also, in the context menu when right-clicking on a folder. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/sites/2/2018/04/fb17194dddf6ffe7e4ca070159c2d3ab.png New context menu options for tabs in Sets: If you right-click on a Sets tab, you’ll discover we’ve added several options for you to leverage, including “close other tabs”, “move to new window”, and “close tabs to the right”. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/sites/2/2018/04/0b5bbadd9b13e7158186ecf3a1747ee9-1024x479.png Improvements to Previous Tabs: We’ve done a few things to improve the experience in this space, including: https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/sites/2/2018/04/497ec26004cb72d721b9257c5de1298e.png You can now pick and choose which Previous Tabs you want to restore, instead of only being able to restore all tabs. Note: if you use the Sets activity card in Timeline, it will automatically restore all tabs. You can now restore Previous Tabs from any type of activity – whereas with the previous wave of features we only supported restoring tabs when the primary window was a document. When you open a document that previously had tabs, a prompt will appear offering to restore those tabs, and the Previous Tabs button will be in the filled state. For things that aren’t documents, a prompt will not automatically appear, but you’ll know that there are tabs available to restore because the Previous Tabs button will be in the filled state. We added an animation to the experience when there are no Previous Tabs available to be restored. Other Sets improvements and fixes based on your feedback, including: We fixed an issue where the active tab color wouldn’t be visible until you hovered over it. We’ve been working on our polish, and you’ll notice that switching between open tabs is now a lot smoother. We’ve improved the reliability when restoring tabs, fixing some issues where tabs didn’t restore as expected. We fixed an issue where closing a tab in a Set then immediately opening a new tab might result in the window unexpectedly maximizing. Here are a few things we’re still working on that aren’t quite finished / resolved yet: File Explorer ribbon doesn’t stay pinned open across restart. It may take some time for the app exclude list in Sets settings to populate the first time it’s opened. Sometimes it takes two tries to bring up an inactive tab from the taskbar. There’s a chance that you may see an unexpected second row of tabs when you open the new tab page. When you launch an app or website from the new tab page, there’s a chance focus will change to a different tab. The “filled” state of the restore icon in Sets will remain filled even though you’ve restored all tabs. We’re aware of an issue that causes Narrator to read extra text when invoking Alt + Tab, and we’re working on a fix. The new tab may sometimes open blank. Closing the tab then opening it again should resolve this issue. Coming soon: We’re planning to enable Sets for more Win32 (desktop) apps including Office! In order to try this new experience out with Office, you’ll need to be an Office Insider running the latest Office builds. Sign-up to be an Office Insider today if you aren’t already! Bluetooth battery percentage in Settings In Bluetooth & other devices Settings, you can now check the battery level of your Bluetooth devices. For Bluetooth devices that support this feature, the battery percentage will update whenever your PC and the device are connected. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/sites/2/2018/04/61a773958cfb884ecb36cef53b47f2d5-1024x764.png Windows Calculator Improvements Windows Calculator has been updated (version 10.1803.711.0) to now correctly calculates square roots for perfect squares (integers that are squares of other integers). Because of the arbitrary precision arithmetic library used by the Calculator app, the square root calculation is an approximation calculated using the Exponential Identity function. Previously, when you would calculate the square root of 4, the result would be 1.99999999999999999989317180305609 which would be rounded to 2 when displayed, because we calculated enough digits to do the rounding correctly. However, as soon as you subtract 2, you would see the remaining digits. After this update, the square root calculation now recognizes perfect squares and correctly returns exactly 2 for the square root of 4. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed an issue resulting in duplicate entries in Disk Management. We fixed an issue that could result in certain UWP apps silently terminating when minimized. We fixed an issue resulting in certain devices with BitLocker enabled unexpectedly booting into BitLocker recovery in recent flights. We fixed a race condition that could result in the taskbar not autohiding after opening and closing the Start menu while a fullscreen window was visible. We fixed an issue where typing in Start would switch to a blank Cortana screen if Start was open when the PC went to sleep. We fixed an issue when using Arabic as your display language where after using the X to close the touch keyboard in a UWP app text field it might stop coming up automatically in that field. Sometimes having too many choices can be confusing and less is more. That is why this new build has consolidated the places where users can adjust their display brightness by removing the display brightness slider in Control Panel Power Options and the “Display brightness” section under Power Options Advanced Settings. Don’t worry! You can still adjust your display brightness via Settings > System > Display settings, the Action Center, and via keyboard hot keys. Known issues If you open Settings and clicking on any links to the Microsoft Store or links in tips, Settings will crash. This includes the links to get themes and fonts from the Microsoft Store, as well as the link to Windows Defender. On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected. When Movies & TV user denies access to its videos library (through the “Let Movies & TV access your videos library?” popup window or through Windows privacy settings), Movies & TV crashes when the user navigates to the “Personal” tab. 7. I’m excited to share this month’s blog post with you all. In addition to highlighting some of the cool work we are seeing from the mixed reality community, I also have some important Simplygon news to share. In the time since we acquired Simplygon they have been working quickly to bring the value of the Simplygon service to mixed reality. Let’s dig in! Bringing Computer Aided Design (CAD) into the era of mixed reality Throughout history, media portability has been critical to the adoption of new computing experiences. For example, prior to the mid-1990s, compact disc owners were unable to move their music from physical to digital media. As audio encoding technology became ubiquitous, music and other digital files became much easier to move between devices. This portability enabled the journey from physical media to mobile mp3 players, to digital music stores, and finally to today’s world where access to nearly every song lies just a few clicks away. We think about examples like this as we make investments to support the extensibility of 3D content across screens and into mixed reality. 3D content of all types – static, animated, simple, and complex – is key to transformative mixed reality experiences. This is why we’ve invested to support GL Transmission Format (glTF) (known by many as “JPEG of 3D”) as an industry standard 3D file format and to bring Simplygon’s 3D asset optimization and decimation services into the Microsoft family. Today, I am excited to announce that Simplygon has added compatibility for JT and STEP file formats, which are pivotal to the productivity of CAD professionals. The addition of two of the most common CAD file formats brings automation of 3D optimization to customers across many industries. As the enterprise increasingly embraces the era of digital transformation, CAD support for Simplygon empowers more industries to painlessly and efficiently bring their existing assets into mixed reality. For 3D content, this announcement is another early step along that same transformative path. CAD users are now able to create on their PC in JT or STEP formats, transcode and optimize via Simplygon, and distribute their work to their preferred device endpoint. We will continue taking steps along the journey to 3D portability and making the proliferation of 3D content as simple as possible. JT and STEP are two of the most common CAD file types and are both ISO standards. These file types are heavily used in manufacturing industries and are vital to solving 3D problems. JT files, used heavily in product lifecycle management software, is primarily used to analyze and augment the geometry of complex models. STEP, or Standard for the Exchange of Product model data, is primarily used to share 3D models between users with different CAD software packages. How to get started Simplygon Cloud is available in Azure Marketplace today. To start, visit our Azure Marketplace home to learn how to deploy the Simplygon Cloud virtual machine and start optimizing your 3D assets. Please also visit our documentation for examples and more information on how to integrate this into your workflow today. Continued adoption of mixed reality During the month of March, we saw some fun, unique, and inspiring work from the global mixed reality community. Here were some of my favorites! Toms River Municipal Utilities Authority (TRMUA) uses mixed reality to view simulated GIS features This is so cool! Len Bundra, the IT/GIS director for the Toms River Municipal Utilities Authority (TRMUA) in Toms River, New Jersey and Alec Pestov, a developer from Toronto, Canada and Founder and CEO of Meemim worked together to create a mixed reality experience that would allow utilities (and eventually other organizations) to collaborate with shared content and data. When we talk about mixed reality and HoloLens giving people super-powers that change the way we work, this is exactly the type of innovation we are talking about! Renault Sport Formula One team brings their creations to life with Microsoft HoloLens I loved reading about the work that the Renault Sport Formula One Team is doing with HoloLens to make it easier for race fans to experience their one of a kind (literally!) creations. As Mark Everest, IS Development Manager at Renault Sport Formula One Team notes, “We build two cars a year, not thousands of cars. The innovation rate involved in design, simulation, testing and manufacturing is much faster than consumer car companies.” Before each new season begins, an entirely new car is born. The Renault Sport Formula One Team has partnered with Microsoft to create a mixed reality experience that brings the car to life at events around the world – without the car (since there is only one) physically having to be there. And while the team is exploring how the HoloLens could impact engineering in the future, this experience will immerse viewers in the current evolution of design from earlier cars — like the RE40 (1983), R26 (2006), and R31 (2011) — to the most recent models, paired with facts about the design process and performance. Reinventing Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers’ ‘Bloom’ for mixed rality Musician, producer, visual artist, and thinker Brian Eno, together with longtime collaborator Peter Chilvers, launched their first mixed reality project with Bloom: Open Space, a generative audio-visual installation brought to life with HoloLens. Based on their award-winning app, Bloom, the innovative mixed reality installation blurs the lines between the physical and virtual, exploring uncharted territory in the realms of both applications and generative art. Murmur: Arctic Realities at Mystic Seaport I have written before about how inspired I am when people use mixed reality to tell stories and paint an otherwise blank canvas. This month I wanted to call attention to an exhibit that is coming to life at Mystic Seaport in New Haven, CT. Murmur: Arctic Realities explores Arctic landforms called pingos – ice hills rising from permafrost soil, covered by a thin layer of earth. These hills grow over centuries and then collapse, pockmarking the landscape in the Circumpolar North. Seattle artist John Grade and new media artist Reilly Donovan have partnered to present an immersive technological component for Murmur using HoloLens. On Build 17128, you will notice that the watermark at the lower right-hand corner of the desktop has disappeared. This does not mean this is the final build as we are not done yet. We’re just now beginning the phase of checking in final code to prepare for the final release. The only difference between this build and Build 17127 from Tuesday is the removal of the watermark. However, we’ve got more fixes being checked in for the next flight. Additionally, we have also released Build 17127 to Windows Insiders in the Slow ring. We plan to provide the ISO for this build early next week. Introducing Cortana Show Me Ever wanted to change a setting, but didn’t know how? 9. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17627 (RS5) to Windows Insiders who have opted into Skip Ahead. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed an issue where If you try to open a file that is available online-only from OneDrive that hasn’t been previously downloaded to your PC (marked with a green checkmark in File Explorer), your PC could bugcheck (GSOD). We fixed an issue resulting in the Emoji Panel not working in the last two flights. When a process in Task Manager is suspended, or has suspended child processes, you’ll now see an icon indicating as much in the Status column of the Processes tab. Known issues If you open Settings and clicking on any links to the Microsoft Store or links in tips, Settings will crash. This includes the links to get themes and fonts from the Microsoft Store, as well as the link to Windows Defender. When opening .html or .pdf files from the local system (double-click, right-click > open), Microsoft Edge will not render the loaded content if Microsoft Edge wasn’t already running before opening the file. To work around the issue, you can open the file again without closing Microsoft Edge. On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected. 10. Today I’m thrilled to announce the spring 2018 release for Microsoft Business Applications. We’re unleashing a wave of innovation across the entire product line with hundreds of new capabilities and features in three core areas: new business applications; new intelligent capabilities infused throughout; and transformational new application platform capabilities. As I talk with business leaders to learn what draws them to Dynamics 365, the answer is almost always the same: they want to digitally transform and believe Microsoft is uniquely capable of helping them succeed on that journey. Microsoft is the only provider of a modern, unified and intelligence-infused family of business applications that span the breadth of business processes – across marketing, sales, service, operations, finance, talent and commerce; all powered by a business analytics and application platform, built atop a common data model, on Azure, our planet-scale public cloud, connected to Office 365 and the world’s largest professional network, LinkedIn. It is this collection of integrated capabilities spanning the Microsoft Cloud that supercharge Dynamics 365, creating what we believe is an unmatched platform for digital transformation. Prescriptive guidance for digital transformation Future growth across all industries, and the organization and business models of entire industries themselves, will be driven in large part by applying digital technologies to more intelligently engage customers, reimagine products and services, transform operations and empower employees. At the center of this opportunity is data: from customers who visit our websites, comment on our brands via social media, visit our stores and use our products; from our products and services which are increasingly “connected” and provide direct insight into their use and health; and from our people who communicate and collaborate with modern productivity tools like Office 365 and who maintain their profiles, skills and business connections on LinkedIn. This data from customers, products and people is fuel for intelligence to power transformed experiences, with those experiences further providing data to further refine interactions. We call this the digital feedback loop. https://mscorpmedia.azureedge.net/mscorpmedia/2018/03/OMB-Digital-feedback-loop_cs-1024x588.png Moving business forward with technology innovation across applications and platform Dynamics 365 is built around this data and intelligence – unlocking these powerful insights and efficiencies for organizations everywhere. Our spring 2018 release represents continued innovation that is the result of that focus. Business process applications We continue to deliver new capabilities and features in Dynamics 365 for customers and partners of all sizes, and for any degree of business complexity. Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Marketing is generally available as part of the spring release. This is a new marketing automation application for companies that need more than basic email marketing at the front end of a sales cycle to turn prospects into relationships. Visit the product page to learn more about how marketers can take advantage of this new solution. To further simplify our Dynamics 365 offerings and increase ease of selection, today we are introducing Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Sales Professional, a new streamlined version of our Sales application with core Sales Force Automation capabilities. From opportunity management to sales planning and performance management, the solution optimizes sales processes and productivity. More details can be found on the product page. Intelligence infused throughout Across Microsoft we’ve invested billions of dollars over the last two decades in cutting-edge AI research. These investments are infused throughout Dynamics 365 and are now available with the spring 2018 release. For example, in Dynamics 365 for Sales, new embedded intelligence capabilities include: Relationship assistant – helps sellers see alerts and reminders to move relationships forward; auto capture with Outlook – helps sellers save time by analyzing email to find messages relevant to specific accounts and then track in Dynamics 365 for Sales with just one click; and email engagement – delivers insights from email with customers, so sellers can prioritize the most receptive contacts. We are also announcing Microsoft Power BI Insights apps, delivering out-of-the-box insights tailored to specific business scenarios – across marketing, sales, service, operations, finance and talent. Insights are generated by applying advanced intelligence to a subset of unique Microsoft data. Also, customers can easily incorporate additional data from a range of third-party sources to enhance relevance and accuracy. Power BI Insights apps can be customized in Power BI and further tailored by applying the full power of Azure data services. Power BI for Sales Insights and Power BI for Service Insights will be available in preview this spring. Power BI for Sales Insights will include an embedded experience for Dynamics 365 for Sales, which allows customers to take advantage of: Relationship analytics – offering a single relationship health score, calculated from large amounts of data representing transactions, customer sentiment, emails and content exchanged, and frequency and level of customer interactions brought together from Dynamics 365, email, and social networks; and Predictive lead scoring – to predict what will happen in the future to help exceed quota attainment by prioritizing efforts on quality leads. New Application Platform capabilities Just as every business is constantly evolving, no app that is successfully serving the changing needs of a business is ever complete. That’s where the Business Application Platform comes in – a foundation to extend, customize and build new applications alongside and on top of Dynamics 365 and Office 365 with PowerApps, Microsoft Flow and Power BI. With the spring release, we’re announcing a significant update to the Common Data Service for Apps that ships with PowerApps and will enable a broad set of capabilities for modeling sophisticated business solutions. Combining these new capabilities with PowerApps existing high productivity point-and-click app development approach unlocks new potential for customers to customize existing apps across Dynamics 365 and Office 365, and quickly build new ones. We’re also announcing a new capability in Power BI – the Common Data Service for Analytics. Integrating and analyzing data siloed across business apps and services can be challenging. Common Data Service for Analytics will help reduce this complexity with the addition of an extensible business application schema built on the common data model. Organizations will be able to integrate data from multiple sources and empower users with access to business analytics across all data relevant to them. CUNA Mutual Group’s new AdvantEdge Analytics offering is a powerful example of how Power BI and Dynamics 365 will help Microsoft partners deliver industry-specific innovation in the cloud atop our Common Data Model. We are excited that CUNA Mutual Group will be the first Microsoft partner to create industry-specific extensions for the Common Data Model, combining their extensive financial services expertise with Microsoft’s expertise in business applications and analytics. Today, CUNA Mutual is announcing plans to develop a next-generation data platform that will extend Microsoft’s Common Data Model to meet the needs of the credit union industry. Standard connectors will populate the data model from the line of business apps used by credit unions, and AdvantEdge Analytics users will get deep insights into their business through Power BI and the ability to translate these insights into action through Dynamics 365. It’s exciting to see partners rallying around and extending the Common Data Model. https://mscorpmedia.azureedge.net/mscorpmedia/2018/03/OMB-Business-Application-Platform_cs-1024x538.png Learn more To see some of these new capabilities set in the context of the broader, global digital transformation opportunity across industries, please tune in to the livestream of Microsoft Business Forward event underway now in Amsterdam. 11. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are pleased to release the first build of the Windows Server vNext Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release that contains both the Desktop Experience as well as Server Core in all 18 server languages, as well as the first build of the next Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel release. What’s New in Windows Server vNext LTSC Build 17623 For every preview release, we will provide a focus area that we would like you to take a look at and provide us with feedback on. We encourage you to try out any functionality in the release and we welcome your feedback. Validation for every preview: There are two major areas that we would like you to try out in each preview release and report back any issues: In-place OS Upgrade (from Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016) Application compatibility – please let us know if any server roles or applications stops working or fails to function as it used to Extending your Clusters with Cluster Sets “Cluster Sets” is the new cloud scale-out technology in this Preview release that increases cluster node count in a single SDDC (Software-Defined Data Center) cloud by orders of magnitude. A Cluster Set is a loosely-coupled grouping of multiple Failover Clusters: compute, storage or hyper-converged. Cluster Sets technology enables virtual machine fluidity across member clusters within a Cluster Set and a unified storage namespace across the “set” in support of virtual machine fluidity. While preserving existing Failover Cluster management experiences on member clusters, a Cluster Set instance additionally offers key use cases around lifecycle management of a Cluster Set at the aggregate. Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection Available in this preview, we provide deep platform sensors and response actions, providing visibility to memory and kernel level attacker activities and abilities to take actions on compromised machines in response to incidents such as remote collection of additional forensic data, remediating malicious files, terminating malicious processes etc. If you’re already using Windows Defender ATP – preview these features by simply installing the latest Windows Server preview build and onboard it to Windows Defender ATP. Otherwise – sign up to Windows Defender ATP trial here Windows Defender ATP Exploit Guard Windows Defender ATP Exploit Guard is a new set of host intrusion prevention capabilities. The four components of Windows Defender Exploit Guard are designed to lock down the device against a wide variety of attack vectors and block behaviors commonly used in malware attacks, while enabling enterprises to balance their security risk and productivity requirements. Attack Surface Reduction (ASR): A set of controls that enterprises can enable to prevent malware from getting on the machine by blocking suspicious malicious files (e.g.: Office docs), scripts, lateral movement, ransomware behavior, and email-based threats Network protection: Protects the endpoint against web-based threats by blocking any outbound process on the device to untrusted hosts/IP through Windows Defender SmartScreen Controlled folder access: Protects sensitive data from ransomware by blocking untrusted processes from accessing your protected folders Exploit protection: A set of vulnerability exploit mitigations (replacing EMET) that can be easily configured to protect your system and applications To deploy a default set of Exploit Guard policy on Windows Server, you can run the following cmdlets: Set-MpPreference -EnableControlledFolderAccess Enabled Set-MpPreference -EnableNetworkProtection Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids 75668C1F-73B5-4CF0-BB93-3ECF5CB7CC84 -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids 3B576869-A4EC-4529-8536-B80A7769E899 -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids D4F940AB-401B-4EfC-AADC-AD5F3C50688A -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids D3E037E1-3EB8-44C8-A917-57927947596D -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids 5BEB7EFE-FD9A-4556-801D-275E5FFC04CC -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids BE9BA2D9-53EA-4CDC-84E5-9B1EEEE46550 -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids 92E97FA1-2EDF-4476-BDD6-9DD0B4DDDC7B -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids D1E49AAC-8F56-4280-B9BA-993A6D77406C -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Disabled Add-MpPreference -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Ids 01443614-cd74-433a-b99e-2ecdc07bfc25 -AttackSurfaceReductionRules_Actions Enabled $url = '<a href="https://demo.wd.microsoft.com/Content/ProcessMitigation.xml">https://demo.wd.microsoft.com/Content/ProcessMitigation.xml</a>' Invoke-WebRequest $url -OutFile ProcessMitigation.xml Write-Host "Enabling Exploit Protection" Set-ProcessMitigation -PolicyFilePath ProcessMitigation.xml Failover Cluster removing use of NTLM authentication Windows Server Failover Clusters no longer use NTLM authentication by exclusively using Kerberos and certificate based authentication. There are no changes required by the user, or deployment tools, to take advantage of this security enhancement. It also allows failover clusters to be deployed in environments where NTLM has been disabled. Launch Windows Feedback for Server\Clustering Shielded virtual machines: Offline mode, Alternate HGS, VMConnect and Shielded Linux support You can now run shielded virtual machines on Hyper-V hosts that suffer intermittent connectivity to their Host Guardian Service (HGS). Fallback HGS allows you to configure a second set of URLs for Hyper-V to try if it can’t reach the primary HGS server. Check out our blog to see how this can be used in a branch office scenario. Offline mode takes the high availability promise for shielded VMs one step further and allows you to continue to start up a shielded VM even if the host’s primary and fallback HGSs can’t be reached as long as: 1) the VM has been successfully started at least once on that host and 2) the host’s security configuration has not changed since then. To enable Offline mode, simply run the following PowerShell cmdlet on the Host Guardian Service: Set-HgsKeyProtectionConfiguration –AllowKeyMaterialCaching. We’ve also made it easier to troubleshoot your shielded virtual machines by enabling support for VMConnect Enhanced Session Mode and PowerShell Direct. These tools are particularly useful if you’ve lost network connectivity to your VM and need to update its configuration to restore access. VMConnect and PowerShell Direct will automatically become available for shielded VMs on a Hyper-V host running build 17040 or later. Finally, for customers that run mixed-OS environments, we now support running Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server inside shielded virtual machines. Try it out and send us your feedback in the Feedback Hub. Encrypted Network in SDN Network traffic going out from a VM host can be snooped on and/or manipulated by anyone with access to the physical fabric. While shielded VMs protect VM data from theft and manipulation, similar protection is required for network traffic to and from a VM. While the tenant can setup protection such as IPSEC, this is difficult due to configuration complexity and heterogeneous environments. Encrypted Networks is a feature which provides simple to configure DTLS-based encryption using the Network Controller to manage the end-to-end encryption and protect data as it travels through the wires and network devices between the hosts It is configured by the Administrator on a per-subnet basis.  This enables the VM to VM traffic within the VM subnet to be automatically encrypted as it leaves the host and prevents snooping and manipulation of traffic on the wire.  This is done without requiring any configuration changes in the VMs themselves. Try it out and send us your feedback in the Feedback Hub. Performance history for Storage Spaces Direct Administrators of Storage Spaces Direct can now get easy access to historical performance and capacity data from their cluster. Did CPU usage spike last night? When did this drive become slow? Which virtual machine used the most memory last month? Is network activity trending up or down? The cluster is pushing 1,000,000 IOPS – is that my new record? Previously, you’d need external tooling to answer these questions. No more! Beautiful new charts in Project Honolulu (and new PowerShell cmdlets, for those so inclined) empower you to answer these questions. There’s nothing to install, configure, or start – it’s built-in and always-on. Learn more at Performance history for Storage Spaces Direct. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/11c698c95e51276644b8cbe41cb9235c.gif Available Content Windows Server vNext LTSC Build 17623 is available in ISO format in 18 languages. Known issues In‑place OS upgrade: Domain Controllers. During an in-place OS upgrade, Active Directory (AD) Domain Controllers (DC) might not be upgraded correctly. So, back up any AD DCs before performing an in-place OS upgrade. Editing or creating policies for AppLocker can cause the MMC snap-in to crash when generated rules for a packaged app. After upgrading the operating system, the AppX database may have corrupted entries, which causes problems for components that use those entries. Testing of the Windows core may fail because of a timeout while attempting to load the test libraries. 15. Our journey this year begins with maintaining our investments on visual accessibility features as well as diversifying our efforts across new and improved accessibility experiences coming in the next update of Windows 10. Many of these new features are available to preview in the Insider builds today. These include, easier to navigate new Ease of Access Settings; continued improvements for Narrator usability and eye control navigation; added features for improved reading and writing outcomes; and collaborating with assistive technology partners to support emerging Windows 10 experiences and bring more assistive technology related apps to the Store. New Ease of Access Settings As we have been improving and adding accessibility features to Windows, we recognized the opportunity to make our Ease of Access Settings easier to discover, learn and use. Easier to Discover: We brought a lot of accessibility settings across Windows directly into Ease of Access, grouping features by ability (vision, hearing and interaction) and listing the most frequently used first. Customers can easily find the settings they care about, especially because anyone can now ask Cortana to find a setting and activate it. Some of the new settings to Ease of Access Settings include the following: The ability to “make everything bigger” or “make everything brighter” on a new Display page in the Vision group An audio page in the Hearing group Speech and eye control page in the Interaction group https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/3e8e41755ea96ac774d2ed165fc40fe3-1024x771.png Ease of Access home screen, showing new organization by ability and updated presentation of existing accessibility settings and related settings from across Windows to help customer more easily discover, learn and use Ease of Access settings. Easier to Learn: For customers who love and rely on the keyboard, Ease of Access settings now have common keyboard shortcuts that are in line with the controls with which they work. Additionally, some pages, like the Color Filters page in the Vision group were redesigned to enable quicker identification of which settings work best for you. Easier to Use: Finally, customers who rely on Narrator can navigate the Settings app using Landmarks and Headings. While Heading navigation was previously limited to the web, it is now available in supported applications. In addition, we added some new controls to: Turn off automatically hidden scrollbars in Windows on the Display page and To emphasize formatted text and select the audio output channel in Narrator. Narrator improvements The Narrator team continually focuses on making a screen reader that is both easy to learn and use and powerful enough to support learning, working and playing on any Windows 10 device. Upcoming Narrator improvements include: Performance and reliability improvements – Narrator is more responsive due to changes to how key presses are processed and improvements in UI Automation. Narrator will read controls more consistently and accurately, such as reading embedded objects like text boxes in Microsoft Word documents. Navigation improvements – Narrator users can navigate consistently across the web and modern apps, especially with Heading navigation. We also improved Narrator focus handling, synchronizing system and Narrator focus so that pressing the Tab key will move forward from the current item that is being read (as opposed to the current item with system focus) by default. A Narrator user can still decouple Narrator focus and system focus by unchecking the checkbox in the Narrator settings. Microsoft Edge browsing improvements – The team made it easier to understand what is happening when users open or close tabs, add favorites and load or refresh a page. For example, Narrator announces when page load begins (“Loading page”), when page load takes longer than expected (“Still loading”) and when page load finishes (“Loading complete”). The team also added keyboard shortcuts to UI tooltips so that screen reader and other keyboard users can learn how to quickly invoke different features. In addition, the team continues to invest in leading the industry by providing the best support for accessibility standards like ARIA 1.1. Audio improvements – Narrator users can emphasize text formatting like bold, italics, underline or all caps without adding verbosity, i.e. using changes in speed, pitch and/or volume to emphasize changes rather than descriptions like “start bold” and “end bold”. When reading by character, Narrator includes phonetic spelling to differentiate letters like “b” and “p”, such as with words like “bravo” and “papa”. Narrator users can also select the audio output channel. Finally, Windows 10 will support additional languages out of the box including Urdu, Farsi, Ukrainian, and Telugu. Braille improvements – Once installed, braille devices are available on the logon screen after powering on a device (in the system context). It is now easier to re-configure the braille display when switching between Narrator and other screen readers. Support for Safe Mode – It is now possible to run Narrator in Safe Mode. Eye control improvements We’re also excited about the coming improvements to the built-in eye control experience that include: Easier navigation with the addition of scrolling and direct left and right click capabilities Acceleration to common tasks with quick access to Windows Start, Timeline, Settings, and device calibration Flexibility to pause eye control, enabling you to hide the launchpad for uninterrupted reading, streaming, or relaxing without accidental clicking Eye control is still in preview, and we welcome your feedback to help improve the experience. Reading and writing improvements This year, we plan to add more features to Learning Tools in Microsoft Edge for ePub files (e.g. electronic books) and Reading view, including the ability to break complex words into smaller parts to make it easier to decode text and the ability to identify parts of speech to make it easier to teach and understand grammar. We’ll also be introducing text suggestions, which suggests the top three words while you are typing with a hardware keyboard. While text suggestions for the touch keyboard support various languages on Windows, text suggestions for hardware keyboard is new and will start with support for English (United States). Assistive Technology improvements We will continue to work closely with assistive technology partners to provide customers with more choices and deliver the best experiences on Windows 10. For example, we continue to invest in UI Automation (UIA), to ensure that assistive technology partners have fast and reliable access to the data they need to create delightful experiences for people with disabilities. Our partners are helping us to enable more third-party experiences on Windows 10 and expand the portfolio of assistive technology available from the Microsoft Store. Some highlights include: NV Access’ NVDA and VFO’s JAWS support for the Microsoft Edge browser NVDA support for Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) and for ARM-based Windows 10 laptops, tablets and 2 in 1 devices TextHelp’s Read&Write and Equatio availability in the Microsoft Store Partnership with Tobii Dynavox, a leading provider of solutions for people with physical and cognitive disabilities to integrate support for eye control hardware in Windows 10 Looking back In 2015, CEO Satya Nadella reaffirmed that creating accessible experiences is core to our mission, calling upon our teams to embrace inclusion in our product design and company culture. Within Windows, we have shared our progress through a variety of channels, including our Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Creators Update, and Fall Creators Update blogs that outline accessibility improvements across Windows 10 releases. The improvements we made spanned a range of disabilities: We made it easier for people with low vision to see their device with Magnifier and Color Filter improvements, and for people who are blind to use their device without a display with Narrator and other screen reader improvements We made it easier for people with hearing loss to hear their device or use their device without sound with Mono Audio and Xbox in-game chat transcription features We made it easier for people with limited dexterity or reach to interact with their devices with new Eye Control and Xbox Co-Pilot features Finally, we made it easier for people with learning differences to read and write with the introduction of Learning Tools in Microsoft Edge and Windows Dictation features. We strive to make Windows more accessible to people of diverse abilities and recognize we have more work to create delightful experiences for everyone. Thanks, and keep the feedback coming Thank you to the many people who have provided feedback to help make Windows 10 experiences delightful for people with disabilities. In 2018, we look forward to working with customers and partners to deliver the best experiences on Windows 10 and grow the portfolio of assistive technologies in the Microsoft Store. If you’re interested in providing help or suggestions, these features have been released in pre-release builds and we welcome your feedback via the Windows Insider Program. Windows 10 makes it easy to share your feedback — just press Windows logo key + F to launch the Feedback app and share what’s top of mind. In addition, if you are a customer with a disability of any kind and need technical assistance, the Disability Answer Desk is there to assist via phone and chat. In the United States, we also have an ASL option for our customers with hearing loss: +1 503-427-1234. 16. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17623 (RS5) to Windows Insiders who have opted into Skip Ahead. What’s new in Build 17623 Introducing High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) in Windows 10 The High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) has arrived for Windows 10 and the Photos app! HEIF is an image container that leverages modern codecs like HEVC to improve quality, compression, and capabilities compared to earlier formats like JPEG, GIF, and PNG. In addition to traditional single images, HEIF supports encoding image sequences, image collections, auxiliary images like alpha or depth maps, live images & video, audio, and HDR for greater contrast. We have heard your feedback that these features and the ability to share photos easily with other platforms is important to you. This release we are delivering essential viewing support (You cannot edit HEIF images in this release). In order to try this out, you need to join the Windows App Preview Program for the Photos app and make sure you are running the March release of the Photos app (Version 2018.18022.13740.0 or newer). This version of the Photos app has been updated for RS4 and RS5 to support viewing the primary image inside a HEIF file and to guide the install of dependencies like the HEIF and HEVC media extensions from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, these media extensions enable HEIF viewing in Photos as well as thumbnails and metadata in File Explorer. Additionally, any application that uses WIC, WinRT Imaging APIs, or the XAML Image control can now add similar support for viewing single HEIF images. Click here to open Feedback Hub and send us feedback on the HEIF experience with the Photos app and Windows 10. External GPU Safe Remove Experience In RS5, we are introducing a safe remove experience for external GPUs connected via Thunderbolt 3. The safe remove experience allows you to know which applications are running on an external GPU so that you can safely remove to prevent data loss during detach. To safely remove an external graphics card, go to the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” icon and click to eject your GPU. If there are applications running on your external GPU, then a dialog will appear with the applications that are currently running. Close the applications to safely remove the device. If there are no applications currently running on your external graphics device then no dialog will appear and you can safely detach your external GPU. A new privacy settings layout in the set up experience This build includes the same changes to the set up experience for privacy settings mentioned last week in RS4 Build 17115. This new design conveys focused information to help our customers make focused choices about their privacy and offers two new settings for Inking & Typing and Find my device. More details about the change can be found in this blog post here. Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) Improvements The Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) Team has introduced new improvements for users to have a better experience with our upcoming release. We have combed through our user feedback and acted to ensure your needs are met. On top of significant performance improvements, we have added an ability to download documents highlighted below. Performance improvements: The teams at Microsoft are constantly working to improve performance for our users. Windows Defender Application Guard is no different. In this upcoming feature update, you will notice an improvement in the launch time for Application Guard. We have made the start process lighter and faster, which will provide our users with a better experience when accessing Microsoft Edge in Windows Defender Application Guard. Download files to the host: One of the items our users voiced was an inability to “download files from within WDAG” to the host. This created an inconsistent experience for Edge overall as downloaded files were stuck inside the container. In this release, users can turn on a feature to download files from their WDAG browsing session onto the host file system. This feature is available in the Windows 10 Enterprise edition and must be turned on. Once the feature is enabled, users will be able to download files into a folder created in their Downloads folder and open all files on the host. How to enable and configure the Download to host feature: Requirements: Latest Windows 10 Enterprise RS4 Builds. Windows Defender Application Guard feature is installed. Network isolation policies are configured. Steps: Navigate to Local Group Policy Editor > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender Application Guard. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/9a85bd8f8c03f9af00e84181f32a4fac-1024x659.png Select Allow files to download and save to the host operating system from Windows Defender Application Guard Select Enabled and Apply https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/b559699405e6723534dc22c67943fd67-1024x950.png After this policy is enabled, you can download files from your Windows Defender Edge session to your Downloads folder. The files from Application Guard will be saved in a folder called “Untrusted files” nested inside the Downloads folder. This folder is created automatically when you first download a file from Application Guard after enabling the policy. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/0282f85f68e5eac57a062313eb8ac07d.png Notes: This feature is off by default. Users will need to assess the files they downloaded and assume any risks of opening on the host. We encourage you to try our new download feature and assess our improved launch performance. Your feedback and suggestion are important to us as we continue to improve our products. You can click here to open Feedback Hub to give feedback on WDAG. We’ve also made updates to Windows Defender System Guard. With Windows Defender System Guard, we are making a leap forward in platform security with memory integrity by default and bringing a born secure device promise to our user base. To learn more about these changes and talk with product team, see their post in the Windows Insider Technical Community. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC For Windows Insiders in the Skip Ahead ring, we will begin testing a change where links clicked on within the Windows Mail app will open in Microsoft Edge, which provides the best, most secure and consistent experience on Windows 10 and across your devices. With built-in features for reading, note-taking, Cortana integration, and easy access to services such as SharePoint and OneDrive, Microsoft Edge enables you to be more productive, organized and creative without sacrificing your battery life or security. As always, we look forward to feedback from our WIP community. We fixed an issue where the Microsoft Store may be completely broken or disappeared altogether after upgrading to this build. We fixed two issues impacting the usability of Windows Mixed Reality on the previous build (Windows Mixed Reality running at a very low frame rate (8-10fps), and a potential crash at startup that could cause Windows Mixed Reality to not work). We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to interact with title bars using touch when Sets was enabled. We fixed an issue resulting in the touch keyboard crashing when focus was moved to certain password fields. We’ve improved the performance of Bluetooth mice when the system is under load. We fixed an issue from recent flights causing precision touchpads to periodically need a few tries to be able to move the mouse. We fixed an issue resulting in the Amharic keyboard not working in Win32 apps. We fixed an issue where EFI and Recovery partitions were unexpectedly listed in Defragment and Optimize Drives. We fixed an issue optimizing drives in Defragment and Optimize Drives didn’t work in the last few flights. We fixed an issue resulting in a permanently black window if you dragged a tab out of a Microsoft Edge window, pulled it up to the top edge of the screen, and moved it back down and released it. We’ve updated the Cortana section in Settings to now be called “Cortana & Search”. We fixed an issue where you couldn’t use touch to interact with the Timeline scrollbar. We fixed an issue where a failed app update could result in that app becoming unpinned from the taskbar. We fixed an issue where if focus was set inside Action Center pressing Esc wouldn’t close the Action Center window. We fixed an issue that could result in ShellExperienceHost periodically waking the device from hibernate if active live tiles were pinned to Start. Known issues If you open Settings and clicking on any links to the Microsoft Store or links in tips, Settings will crash. This includes the links to get themes and fonts from the Microsoft Store, as well as the link to Windows Defender. If you try to open a file that is available online-only from OneDrive that hasn’t been previously downloaded to your PC (marked with a green checkmark in File Explorer), your PC could bugcheck (GSOD). You can work around this problem by right-clicking on these files and selecting “Always keep on this device.” Any file-on-demand from OneDrive that is already downloaded to the PC should open fine. The Emoji Panel keyboard shortcuts don’t work – for now you’ll need to use the touch keyboard to enter emoji. If you right-click on the taskbar you’ll find an option to show the touch keyboard button and go from there. REMINDER: Sign up to be an Office Insider! 17. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17123 (RS4) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. What’s new in Build 17123 Introducing High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) in Windows 10 The High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) has arrived for Windows 10 and the Photos app! This version of the Photos app has been updated for RS4 to support viewing the primary image inside a HEIF file and to guide the install of dependencies like the HEIF and HEVC media extensions from the Microsoft Store. Windows Mixed Reality With this build, the Windows Mixed Reality Team would like to let you know about a few known issues as you try out the new Windows Mixed Reality features: We’re investigating reports of a performance regression for Windows Mixed Reality on hybrid laptops on this build. In some cases, the inbox apps will fail to load inside of Windows Mixed Reality and newly placed Holograms may be empty. Restarting Windows Mixed Reality should resolve both issues. Occasionally there may be a long delay and restart of mixed reality when transitioning to a new place (Skyloft or Cliff House). Since the last build, the following bugs should now be fixed: The ambient sound in Skyloft should now the correct volume. Launching the Store from Movies & TV should no longer crash either app. 360 videos should render correctly inside of the Edge app, and the 360 Viewer can be launched from directly from the Store app. To give feedback on Windows Mixed Reality, click here to open Feedback Hub. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC We fixed an issue from the last flight on PCs with the Dolby Access app installed and expired Dolby Atmos license, where the Windows Audio service (audiosrv) would crash with a stack overflow exception and the PC won’t have sound. We fixed an issue resulting in a bug check with the error message SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR in recent flights. As of Build 17063, a change was made that may have caused some older drivers to not load properly. This may have caused update failures or bugchecks (GSODs) shortly after the PC was rebooted. This build includes fixes for this that should prevent these update failures and bugchecks from occurring. Thanks everyone who’s shared feedback about our Embedded Handwriting Panel so far – we’re making a change such that if you clean install, reset your PC, or upgrade straight to this build from the Fall Creators Update this experience will be turned off by default. The setting will remain on for Insiders who have upgraded from previous builds where it was enabled, and can be turned on by anyone with a pen capable device via the “Write directly into text field” option under Pen & Windows Ink Settings. Known issues If you had your phone linked to your PC prior to upgrading, you’ll find it has become unlinked after upgrading. You can relink your phone from Settings > Phone. 19. Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are pleased to release Project Honolulu Technical Preview 1803 to Windows Server Insiders. Also available is the Insider preview package of Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows 10 Insider build 17110 or higher. Available Content Project Honolulu Technical Preview 1803 Remote Server Administration Tools Build 17108 What’s New in RSAT This preview build of Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) can be installed on Windows 10 Insider build 17110 or higher. FIXED: DNS server tools are now correctly installed as part of the RSAT package. FIXED: Shielding data files and template disks can now be created by their respective wizards in the RSAT package. KNOWN ISSUE: The x86 RSAT package may fail during installation on Windows 10 builds older than 17110, and on builds other than the 171xx series. What’s New in Project Honolulu Technical Preview 1803 Release Summary In this iteration, we resolved 430 bugs, as well as the following feature improvements – Access Control Major new functionality in this release — we have added Azure Active Directory (AAD) based access control. Using AAD identities, you can configure conditional access policies that require Multi-Factor authentication, device compliance, and more. You can find instructions to configure this in the Azure Active Directory section of the Gateway access documentation. Known issue with AAD authentication: If you are using a self-signed certificate, AAD authentication will fail in Microsoft Edge. To work around this issue, you must use a valid certificate or choose to trust the self-signed certificate on your machine where you are running the Edge browser. Logging We’ve updated the logging schema to include more details for auditing and troubleshooting. Previously, the only details logged were the module, user on the target node, and the PowerShell script or CIM call executed. Now events are logged with these parameters: Module: which tool triggered the action being logged CIM call, PowerShell script name, or file uploaded Gateway from which the action occurred UserOnGateway: the username used to access the Honolulu gateway UserOnTarget: the username used to access the target node (if different from the gateway user) LAPS: Boolean showing whether LAPS was used to connect to the target node These events are logged on the target node in event channel Microsoft-ServerManagementExperience with event ID 4000. Resizable Panes and Columns New UI functionality – resizable UI elements! You can now resize the follow components: Tool menu Details pane Overview All datagrid and datatree columns (Grids that support grouping are not yet supported.) Tool Improvements Finally, we have added new functionality to the following existing tools: Certificates – Added Request & Renew certificate functionality. Files – Download or upload whole folders with automatic zip and unzip. Processes o Added more information in the details pane: Services, Handles, and Modules. o Processes are now grouped by default when managing the local Windows 10 PC. Services – View and edit additional settings such as startup parameters, user account, and recovery options. Storage Volumes – Ability to enable quotas using the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) role service Updates – The update tool now respects the WSUS setting in your environment and gives you the option to check online for updates as in the desktop tool. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure The Hyper-Converged Cluster connection includes several significant new features in 1803, including: Storage jobs like repair and rebalance are now visible directly on the objects they affect: https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/411613c2de0c2a60729f3a77d8e0a935.png You can toggle deduplication and compression on/off for each volume with one click: https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/6b4ca26ccc0f124afe5f1be6045813da.png …and more! To learn more about what’s new for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure, check out this video. Hyper-Converged Cluster Known Issues You will need a recent Windows Server Insider build to create an HCI cluster. Storage jobs sometimes say they started in the year 1601. This is unlikely to be correct and is being investigated. Although they can run long, storage jobs generally finish within a few hours of when they start. The checkbox for deduplication and compression in the ‘Create volume’ pane may be disabled even if the Data Deduplication feature is installed. If this happens, the workaround is to use the rocker switch on the Volume page to enable deduplication and compression. When filtering the Inventory grid, the count of items does not update. Microsoft Update We have built the foundation for Honolulu to be updated via Microsoft Update. If you do not have the “Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows” setting enabled on the machine, the Honolulu installer will give the choice to toggle it during deployment. How to Download To obtain the Insider software downloads, registered Insiders may navigate directly to the Windows Server Insider Preview download page. 20. Hello Windows Insiders! Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17120 (RS4) to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. What’s new in Build 17120 Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) Improvements The Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) Team has introduced new improvements for users to have a better experience with our upcoming release. Steps: 1. Navigate to Local Group Policy Editor > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender Application Guard. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/9a85bd8f8c03f9af00e84181f32a4fac-1024x659.png 2. Windows Mixed Reality Earlier this week, we announced that Insiders can take a sneak peek at the latest features coming this spring to Windows Mixed Reality as of Build 17115. With this build, the Windows Mixed Reality Team would like to let you know about a few known issues as you try out the new Windows Mixed Reality features: We’re investigating reports of a performance regression for Windows Mixed Reality on hybrid laptops on this build. In some cases, the inbox apps will fail to load inside of Windows Mixed Reality and newly placed Holograms may be empty. Restarting Windows Mixed Reality should resolve both issues. Windows Mixed Reality will crash if you launch the Store from Movies & TV, and then close both apps. The ambient sound in Skyloft is louder than it should be. On laptops with hybrid GPUs the video doesn’t render for 360 videos rendered directly in the Edge app although you can still hear the sound. The 360 viewer fails to launch from the Store app when you click on the “Launch” button after installing the 360 Viewer Edge extension. To workaround manually launch Edge and then enable the 360 Viewer extension. To give feedback on Windows Mixed Reality, click here to open Feedback Hub. General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC When a process in Task Manager is suspended, or has suspended child processes, you’ll now see an icon indicating as much in the Status column of the Processes tab. We fixed an issue resulting in the UAC dialog potentially not rendering correctly in the last few flights. We fixed an issue resulting in OneNote crashing when using touch to drag and drop elements in recent flights. We fixed an issue resulting in the touch keyboard crashing when focus was moved to certain password fields. We’ve improved the performance of Bluetooth mice when the system is under load. 21. Earlier this month I shared news on Microsoft’s continuing efforts to help protect our customers against the Spectre and Meltdown hardware-based vulnerabilities. Today, we are announcing the expansion of devices covered by Windows security updates by removing the anti-virus compatibility check for Windows 10 devices, expanding the availability of Intel microcode updates in the Microsoft Catalog, and adding coverage for x86 editions of Windows 71 and Windows 8.1. Expanding availability of Windows security updates based on broad anti-virus compatibility Our recent work with our anti-virus (AV) partners on compatibility with Windows updates has now reached a sustained level of broad ecosystem compatibility. As we’ve previously detailed, some AV products had created compatibility issues with the Windows security updates, by making unsupported calls into the kernel memory, which required us to make AV compatibility checks to manage this risk. Based on our analysis of available data, we are now lifting the AV compatibility check for the March Windows security updates for supported Windows 10 devices via Windows Update. This change will expand the breadth of Windows 10 devices offered cumulative Windows security updates, including software protections for Spectre and Meltdown. We continue to require that AV software is compatible and in cases where there are known issues of AV driver compatibility, we will block those devices from receiving Windows updates to avoid any issues. I’ll share more details in the weeks ahead on AV compatibility for older versions of Windows, as we further our goal of broad ecosystem compatibility. We recommend customers check with their AV provider on compatibility of their installed AV software product. Expanding the coverage of needed updates to address Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities Today, we are also significantly expanding the Intel validated microcode updates we are making available via the Microsoft Catalog. The expanded set of Intel microcode updates covers a broad set of the latest generation Intel platforms including Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake devices, and is available for Windows 10 version 1709. We will continue to broaden the number of Intel microcode updates available via the catalog as they become available to Microsoft from Intel. A full list of available Intel microcode updates by Window 10 version can be found in KB4093836. We continue to partner closely with chipset and device makers as they offer more vulnerability mitigations2. We are also adding to the breadth of Windows updates to help protect against these vulnerabilities. Today, we are adding software coverage for the Meltdown vulnerability for x86 editions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and we continue to work to provide updates for additional supported versions of Windows. You can find more information and a table of updated Windows editions in our Windows customer guidance article. Staying up to date As always, we emphasize the importance of installing the latest Windows updates when prompted on your device, so you are on the most secure version of Windows 10, which is version 1709 (Fall Creators Update). As a reminder, Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary Update) will reach end of service and receive its final security update on April 10, 2018. If you see a reminder that the latest version is ready to install, we recommend you follow the steps to pick a time that works best for you or update immediately. If you have not received an update offer on an older version of Windows 10, you can always choose to install the Fall Creators Update from the Software Download Site. Servicing timelines for each version of Windows 10 are shared on the Windows Lifecycle Fact Sheet. 1 Windows 7 version SP1 2 Customers should check with their CPU (chipset) and device manufacturers on availability of applicable firmware security updates for their specific device, including Intel’s Microcode Revision Guidance. 23. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/f56d883fead31e9d6ce89a33fc871a52-1024x683.jpg Last year around this time I had the chance to write a post about one of my favorite mixed reality uses cases – healthcare. Since that time, we have continued to see remarkable momentum for mixed reality across numerous facets of the industry. This week at HIMSS our team had the privilege to once again be on the ground to see and experience how customers and partners are embracing mixed reality to transform the way they innovate, support, and help others. Coming out of the show I wanted to take a moment to spotlight some of the innovation work we are seeing from organizations who are working to forge the future of healthcare. CAE Healthcare Joining us onsite at HIMSS this year was CAE Healthcare. CAE is an industry leader in the development of simulation-based technologies, curriculum, and resources that improve clinical performance. I talked about some of their earliest work with Microsoft HoloLens last year – well, they certainly haven’t slowed down! CAE VimedixAR is the first ultrasound simulator to integrate HoloLens. Freed from the limits of a two-dimensional environment inside a monitor, healthcare professionals can display, enlarge, turn, and rotate realistic-looking anatomical parts, or command them to return into the manikin body. Users and those learning with this technology are able to witness (in real time) the ultrasound beam as it cuts through human anatomy. With CAE LucinaAR, clinical learners can view 3D holograms of a fetus as it descends the birth canal and gain an unprecedented view of anatomy as they learn to manage a shoulder dystocia delivery. CAE Lucina is a wireless childbirth simulator with validated, integrated maternal-fetal physiology for training on all the stages of delivery and the rare emergency scenario. With five pre-configured Simulated Clinical Experiences (SCEs), and new mixed reality modules coming soon, Lucina allows instructors at universities and hospitals to easily integrate simulation and augmented reality into their hands-on educational programs. With their Abiomed Impella procedural training solution, CAE Healthcare is integrating HoloLens into its simulation-based training platform that allows physicians to practice ultrasound-guided placement of the world’s smallest heart pump. Overlaying the ultrasound manikin, probe and instruments, the CAE HoloLens framework will depict physiological responses and potential complications to help clinicians quickly master and deploy the device without risk to patients. Adding to its physics-driven simulator for the Medtronic Micrahttps://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/2.4/72x72/2122.png Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS), the world’s smallest pacemaker, CAE Healthcare delivered a mixed reality training solution for up to 11 simultaneous learners on its Microsoft HoloLens platform. Learners can practice while viewing interactive holograms of a 3D beating heart into which the Micra delivery system is visible and connected in real-time. Pearson delivers mixed reality learning tools for nursing professionals At Bett this year we were thrilled to announce some of the great curricula our friends at Pearson were delivering to train nurses using mixed reality and the benefit of holographic patients. Today, I am happy to share more details about one of their extraordinary pieces of the curriculum – HoloPatient. HoloPatient is a mixed-reality learning tool for nursing, allied health and medical schools that will deliver simulated patient experiences to more students, at a more manageable cost, and with a greater degree of consistency than ever before. This cutting-edge 3D immersive solution redefines how learners interact with their worlds and each other—bringing learning to life with startling clarity and breathing new possibility into teaching. Designed and conceived in collaboration with expert healthcare educators and simulation facilitators from around the world, HoloPatient uses Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Capture technology allowing tutors and students to engage in a range of learning and assessment activities previously only possible when using actors or by encountering patients in real life. https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/7969f8b3b28698a92898365ad9567c57-1024x549.jpg HoloPatient drives consistency across the delivery of learning content and assessment while also allowing nursing and medical schools to augment their existing delivery of world-class education and training with one of the most promising and engaging teaching and learning use-cases for mixed reality currently available. The HoloPatient app will be released globally in April 2018, along with a virtual reality version later in the year. By the end of June 2018, Pearson will have released four other learning tools including Anatomy, Chemistry (building molecules in 3D), Math (Area and Volume of 3D objects) and History. You can find out more at pearsonimmersive.com. SphereGen SphereGen is utilizing mixed reality to create innovative solutions designed to increase efficiency and revolutionize the learning process. SphereGen collaborated with St. George’s University to develop the Learning Heart. The Learning Heart is a HoloLens application that assists students in understanding the elements of the Heart. As a study aid and teaching tool, this application can be used individually or collaboratively by multiple HoloLens users. The holograms are fully three-dimensional and can be traversed around and viewed from any position and angle. DICOM Director is a full product suite designed to enable communication and collaboration between different radiologists, doctors, and medical practices. The backend of this solution enables radiologists to view, transfer and share scans. This solution utilizes HoloLens as a viewer for radiological scans, such as MRIs, cat scans, and several others. Radiologists and doctors can remotely view their scans through the HoloLens and/or a Windows Mixed Reality headset. The viewing functionality enables the user to see the series of scans, an enlarged view of the selected scan (which they can scroll through), and the 3D model reconstruction from the scans. Live surgery with HoloLens One of the most mind-blowing moments in mixed reality occurred just a few months ago. On that day AP-HP, Paris French hospitals group, on YouTube, assisted by TeraRecon medical holographic platform leveraging Azure GPU and HoloLens. The surgeon was assisted by TeraRecon and their partners to develop the complete end-to-end solution from the patient surgery planning up to the real-time streaming of the real patent image data (pre-operative 3D CT scan) with its full volume rendering in the highest quality ever seen including segmentation of the CT scan. This live surgery was conduct using sharing experience to share the same patient data across multiple HoloLens with the same holographic space (operating room) as well as sharing the HoloLens view with the remote surgeon. Visual3D With a mission to empower doctors, Visual 3D Medical Science and Technology Development CO. LLC) is dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and mixed reality to enhance the capability of doctors. By way of research and development, Visual3D’s technology can promote doctor’s ability of perception and appliance of medical information; enhance the remote cooperative abilities of doctors in different places to build a scientific and technological platform for intelligent medical therapy. Visual3D has already performed over 200 hip, knee, and spinal surgeries in China using HoloLens. In addition to using HoloLens in the operating theater, Visual3D is using HoloLens to assist doctors pre-surgery as both a tool to brief patients on their upcoming surgical procedures, as well as allowing doctors to pre-visualize and rehearse the procedure before entering the operating room. Next Surgeries Digital Pages, a leading Brazilian company in the lifecycle management of digital contents, has developed an interactive application for surgery planning using Microsoft HoloLens. The application offers students, surgeons and healthcare professionals a new perspective on the modeling and manipulation of physical and virtual 3D objects. Next Surgeries introduces the use of holographic projections in surgical planning, reducing the total time of surgeries, the exposure of the patient and staff to radiation and risk of infections, blood loss, etc. The application is available on the digital teaching platform RDP Learning integrated to HoloLens, bringing innovation and more security to the health sector. I look forward to sharing more with you all soon as we continue to shine a light on many of the great mixed reality innovations being delivered by customers, partners, and developers of mixed reality! 24. Some of you may have seen a discussion around our plans for Windows 10 S on Twitter today, and given some additional questions I’ve received, I thought it might be helpful to share more about our plans with Windows 10 S. Last year we introduced Windows 10 S – an effort to provide a Windows experience that delivers predictable performance and quality through Microsoft-verified apps via the Microsoft Store. This configuration was offered initially as part of the Surface Laptop and has been adopted by our customers and partners for its performance and reliability. Since that time, we’ve received great feedback from customers and partners on Windows 10 S. Customers love the security, faster boot time, better battery life and consistent performance over time. Our partners have brought to market more than 20 devices with Windows 10 S enabled. We have also heard feedback that the naming was a bit confusing for both customers and partners. Based on that feedback, we are simplifying the experience for our customers. Starting with the next update to Windows 10, coming soon, customers can choose to buy a new Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro PC with S mode enabled, and commercial customers will be able to deploy Windows 10 Enterprise with S mode enabled. We expect the majority of customers to enjoy the benefits of Windows 10 in S mode. If a customer does want to switch out of S mode, they will be able to do so at no charge, regardless of edition. We expect to see new Windows 10 devices ship with S mode, available from our partners in the coming months, so check back here for updates. We hope this new approach will simplify and make it possible for more customers to start using Windows in S mode: a familiar, productive Windows experience that is streamlined for security and performance across all our editions. 25. Hello Windows Insiders! https://winblogs.azureedge.net/win/2018/03/d92784689f1fc626005d67f274261fa6-1024x575.jpg We’re excited to offer our Fast ring insiders a sneak peek at the latest features coming this spring to Windows Mixed Reality! Our favorite new updates in Insider Preview Build 17115 include: A brand-new environment. In October we mentioned that the Cliff House was the first of many environments you’ll be able to enjoy in Windows Mixed Reality, and now we’re rolling out the Skyloft for you to customize and expand your MR experience. You can navigate there by selecting Places on the Mixed Reality Start menu. As requested, we’ve added haptic feedback to the motion controllers for SteamVR games! We’ve improved performance in SteamVR games with significantly lower video RAM usage. We’ve also improved the performance of live video preview in the Mixed Reality Portal on desktop. You can now take mixed reality photos directly from your controller by holding the Windows button and then tapping the trigger. This works across environments and apps except for capturing content protected with DRM. The automatic performance settings have been updated to provide an optimized experience, and we’ve added a new setting to override the default in Settings > Mixed Reality > Headset display. Setup now provides more detailed information about common compatibility issues with USB3.0 controllers and graphics cards. Many more improvements that the team has been hard at work on! This build also contains fixes for the two blocking issues in our previous flight, as well as reliability and fit and finish improvements. We are still working on few known issues related to Inbox Apps launching and tracking being lost in some sleep/update scenarios. To use Windows Mixed Reality, you’ll need a capable PC and a compatible headset. We’re looking for more great feedback from Insiders on these new features so let us know what you think!
