1. Hi Nuley, The reputation based protection is there to protect against Pup's etc that normally come bundled with free software. If you tend to download quite a bit of free software, it's not a bad idea to have it enabled. It works a bit like 'Checky'. If you don't enable it, you'll just have to remember to check any software for any 3rd party programs. It can do no harm to enable it.
2. Hi nuley, The built in Windows Defender is perfectly adequate with Win10. If the McAfee is active on the machine, then Windows Defender will be turned off automatically. This prevents conflicts within the system. To use Windows Defender you will need to completely uninstall McAfee. Which is not always straight forward so you will need to do this in 2 parts. Right click on the Start button, scroll up to Apps and Features and click on it. Click on McAfee in the program list and select uninstall. Once you have run the uninstaller, download the McAfee Removal Tool and save it to your Desktop. Right click on the downloaded program and select Run as Administrator. Once the tool has run you will need to reboot your system. Then make sure that Windows Defender is now running. (sometimes it doesn't restart automatically) Right click on the Start button again and select Settings. Now click on Update and Security. On the left hand side, click on Windows Security. You will see the settings there for Windows Defender. The McAfee Removal Tool will safely remove the following.... McAfee Total Protection McAfee Internet Security Suite McAfee PC Protection Plus McAfee VirusScan Plus McAfee Wireless Protection McAfee AntiSpyware McAfee Data Backup McAfee Personal Firewall McAfee Privacy Service McAfee QuickClean McAfee SecurityCenter McAfee SiteAdvisor McAfee Anti-Spam McAfee SpamKiller McAfee VirusScan McAfee Wireless Protection
3. Hi JJD and welcome to FPCH. I take it that you are using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft? Have you run all of the Windows updates on the laptop before running the Media Creation Tool? That error can point to a number of things but the first option would be to check that all of the drivers are up to date. Are you installing from a USB stick or from DVD? How old is the laptop? ..... some older systems are not compatible with Win10. ( it's hardware incompatibility ) I've upgraded about 6 Win7 systems to Win10 ... but there was 2 that just would not update no matter what I tried.
4. Hi Bringe, There's actually no need to uninstall Opera. You don't have to use Google. Opera’s default search engine is Google, but you may prefer to search using Ecosia, DuckDuckGo, Amazon, or Wikipedia. To change the default search engine: Go to Settings. Under Search engine, select your preferred search engine from the dropdown menu.
5. Hi Bringe, you may find this helpful 5 browsers that don’t save your history and personal data I did use 'Opera' many moons ago and always found it very light on resources .... might be worth a look.
6. Hi Makkk10, You seem to have a few replies to the same post here.... MP3 FILES NOT BEING RECOGNISED ON MEDIA PLAYERS (VLC, WINDOWS) Posting on multiple sites at the same time can cause confusion as each site doesn't know what has already been suggested. This also leads to some wasted research time for the limited staff and helpers on each site. I know that people just want a solution as quickly as possible but it's just something to bear in mind.
7. So this is not a new boxed PC, it's one that the shop had on display. I had this when I bought a Win XP Pc years ago.... worst buy I ever made.
8. Hi Bard, Just a few questions...... So you have used this headset previously on the PC and it worked fine ? So the headset works on your phone, but not on the PC ? Did anything change recently on the PC..... was there any updates etc? There is a Windows 10 help page on headphone problems ... Here See if any of the options help.
9. Hi Bard, Obvious thing first is to make sure that the microphone is actually enabled in the PC settings. Try this... Click on 'Search' and type in control panel. Click on the Control Panel app at the top to open. When Control panel opens, scroll down and select Sound Select the Recording tab and make sure there's a tick on the microphone icon. If there's no tick, you can configure the microphone settings from there.
10. Hi H-B-E, This I find a bit odd.... I've never heard of an AV program that warned that your computer was locked. I'm betting that it wasn't from Microsoft. You can check to see if Windows Defender found and quarantined anything. Open Windows Defender... Click the History tab.... I suggest that you click 'All detected items' Then click View details. This will tell if in fact anything was found. A second opinion is always a good idea in these situations. Download and install MalwareBytes (this is a free program to download and run for 14 days. After 14 days it will revert to totally free/on demand scanner) When finished installing, open the program and click the Scan button. Let the scan run uninterrupted ( it may well update before running the scan ) If anything is found let it quarantine the items. It may well reboot your system when the scan is complete... this is normal. Let us know if anything is found. We can do some more indepth searches of your system but this will give us a good idea if any further work is necessary.
11. Hi bj, Just a quick question... I assume you are connecting by WiFi, have you tried connecting with an ethernet cable. Sometimes my laptop disconnects for some unknown reason, if I then plug in an ethernet cable, all's well.
12. Looking into this ISP, the info/reviews don't fill you with a lot of confidence. https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.thephone.coop A lot seem to be having connection problems.
13. Who is your ISP ? It certainly looks like the problem is their end. May well be a dodgy router. Speed test also have an android app available from Google Play ( 'Speed Test by Ookla' ....no idea if there's an app for Iphone ) I've used that a few times as a double check on the computer signal.
14. Hi Roy, When you get an unstable connection on Zoom while at home or on the go, then you’ll have to refer to your Internet infrastructure and your ISP. Here are the most popular causes: (taken from a Zoom help page) You’re too far away from the Wi-Fi router You have poor / slow cellular coverage Your network hardware needs an update or a restart There are temporary ISP infrastructure issues There are peering issues with Zoom servers First question has to be..... what is your internet speed? Go to Speed Test Click the 'I consent' button Click 'Go' When completed, a report will come up showing your Ping, Download and Upload speed. Let us have those. The recommended speed for using Zoom is 1.5 Mbps ( but that's the bare minimum ) Have you checked if there are problems at Zooms end? This can be done by going to .... Zoom Status
15. Hi uomoinglese I'd say that you have been conned good and proper. Nope, you didn't. Windows 10 comes with a firewall installed already and this is perfectly adequate. Certainly wouldn't have been from the legit McAfee. They would never ring to check your system. If this was the HP support assistant..... it would have been already installed if your system was manufactured by Hewlett & Packard. If it was the Intel Driver & Support Assistant .... this is a free download and isn't worth having anyway as Windows 10 updates will check for any updates once a month anyway. No, certainly isn't. As for McAfee, this is best removed..... I'd never recommend the program. In fact when John McAfee sold the company he said that it was one of the worst products on the market and he was glad to get rid of it. John McAfee: McAfee antivirus is one of the worst products on the planet As Ken has already stated.... The built in Windows Defender is perfectly adequate ( I run that on 2 of my systems and have never had a problem). If you really wanted a paid for AV program, I'd suggest Eset Nod32 ..... a 3 year license will only cost about £63.00 at the moment. https://www.eset.com/uk/home/nod32-antivirus/ If you have a chance of getting your money back, I'd definitely go for it.
16. That's what I did with one of my old Win7 systems. Installed Linux Mint .... that seemed fairly close to what I was used to with Windows.
17. Hi RK, Yes it seems that M$ are pushing out the new version of Edge (based on the Chromium browser ) to versions of Win7 and Win8.1 as well as Win10. https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-pushes-out-new-edge-to-windows-7-users/ I would think that it can just be uninstalled in the normal way, although I haven't received this update on my Win7 system as I've turned off Windows updates. As M$ no longer support Win7 I saw no point in still having the updates turned on.
18. Hi HBE, Using the reset advice given by KenB and then using the 'Remove Everything' option will certainly achieve what you are after.
19. Sounds like the problem is solved Jim. You should be fine with Brave and Duckduckgo.......
20. More than likely linked to one of the preinstalled programs. You can safely ignore it..... or if it becomes a pain, you could always install Chrome but never use it. Sometimes it's an advantage to have more than one browser installed, especially if you developed a problem with the installed 'Edge' browser. I take it you are now typing from another system...... your info at the side is now showing Win7 and actually using Chrome.
21. Completely agree with Ned here. Remove the installed AV that you are being asked to pay for and then activate Windows Defender. If copy and paste doesn't work after this, try running the Windows updates. Failing that, a work around is to use the keyboard shortcuts....
22. Hi Jim, If your using Adblocker Global then it must be Google Chrome that you're using. To be honest I can't find out much about it (no good or bad reviews) and it certainly doesn't come up in any of the best Adblockers for this year. It's more of an addon than a stand alone program. A lot of Adblockers do have problems with You Tube adds. As you say that Then it seems that the problem is related to the adblocker that you are using. You need to use a tried and tested Adblocker. The 2 that I would recommend would be .......... AdBlock I personally use uBlock Origin. uBlock Origin for Chrome Click on Add to Chrome Once installed, I recommend that you update the blocking definitions. Right click on the uBlock Origin icon (top right of the browser) and select Options. Now click on 3rd Party Filters >> Update Now. uBlock Origin is more than an "ad blocker": it is a wide-spectrum blocker -- which happens to be able to function as a mere "ad blocker". The default behavior of uBlock Origin when newly installed is to block ads, trackers and malware sites. Try one of these instead of Adblocker Global and see if that fixes the problem. Be sure to remove Adblocker Global first.
23. Ok Jim, Don't forget to let me know if you are also using the same browser for the Win7 and Win10 systems. Just want to find out if this is a browser, software or operating system problem.
24. Hi Jim, Does the advert pop up on the Win7 and the Win10 systems? (or just the Win7 ) What browser are you using?
