My laptop keeps freezing for no apparent reason. Just stops dead. Sometimes i can get it going again by closing the laptop (and so putting it on standby) and then turning it on again but usually i just have to cut the power. Sometimes i get the dreaded blue screen with lots of info on it but the only text i catch before it resets is 'beginning physical memory dump' which is alarming to say the least but when it turns on again i just get the message 'this computer has recovered from a serious error' and its fine. Ive used ATF cleaner and run scans using AVG, Super AntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and ESET online scan and with no results. I was thinking that maybe it was just overheating but it seems to happen completely at random. Sometimes i can have the computer on all day and its fine, other times it freezes everytime i turn it on. Its very frustrating!! Another POI is that this laptop has died before (HD went completely) and it got refurbished (maybe that has something to do with it??). My laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro with XP home edition and Intel Pentium Dual-Core. Any help would be great! Thanks

Streaming and Player Problem
raj_head replied to raj_head's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Im getting a white screen with the sound, just no video. -
I have a licensed version of AVG 8.0.169 and there is a problem with updating the anti-virus and anyi-spyware. Each day, AVG automatically updates but now this has stopped. The anti-virus and anti-spyware databases are 'out of date' and when i try a manual update, AVG just states it is'checking for updates' but never finds any thus leaving it out of date permanently. I emailed AVG about the problem and they sent me a diag' tool which i ran and sent back the results. AVG have failed to reply and now the diag' tool is not working. Any help would be great as im worried im leaving my computer unprotected. Thanks!

Streaming and Player Problem
raj_head replied to raj_head's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for the replies guys! I have k-lite mega codec pack and thought that it would have an AC3 codec as pop up players have never had a problem before. Anyways, i downloaded an AC3 filter (1.51a) and it hasnt fixed the problem. Still the messages of 'connecting to media' and 'ready' but no video or audio. Any other ideas? (im a bit of a novice in these matters) Many Thanks -
When trying to stream video on pop-up players using windows media player (such as on the bbc), the video does not work. Media gives the messages of "connecting to media" and "ready" but there is no video. This has not always been the case and im not sure what event has started this problem off. When trying to stream video using real player instead, i only get audio. I am using IE7, OS XP and Media Player 11. Any help would be great!

Gutted. Thanks very much for the help Wolfey. Will start the search for a new laptop...

That was my assumption also. What an absolute disaster. Tapping F8 doesnt seem to do anything im afraid. Can i enter safe mode through bios?
-
No nothing like that comes up. It displays the Fujitsu Siemens logo and options to enter BIOS or boot menu then straight to a black screen stating that there is no OS. In bios, its says there is no IDE channel 1 master but there is IDE channel 2 master which is [PBDS DS-8A1P-(SM)] if that has any relavance at all?
-
Im in the bios screen but im afraid i have no idea what im looking for! Where would it say whether my hard drive is being detected?
-
I was using my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amillo Pro) and for no apparent reason a black DOS like screen came up stating some fault which stupidly i did not read. After trying to reboot, i get the message the it can no longer find an OS (which was XP). I can still enter the BIOS screen and boot menu (of which i have no CD) but nothing else. What the hell has happened? I had only recently done a thorough virus check that revealed nothing. This is very worrying as my finals are in 2 weeks and all my work was on the laptop. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Black Screen After Downloading Avast
raj_head replied to raj_head's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
There is nothing at all i dont think. No BIOS screen or windows boot screen or anything. It sounds to me almost like a hardware problem where the screen packs in (happened to me with my old laptop) though this happening just after a virus attack seems a bit suspect. Do you think its a serious issue affecting DOS aswell? Can a virus do that? -
My girlfriend called me up and told me how she was downloading a file and a popup appeared saying how her computer is infected and she needs to download this program to get the virus. And of course, not being the most computer savvy person, and to my utter disbelief, she clicked yes. AVG caught a few virus and she moved them to the vault and deleted them. I then recommended that she get Avast as AVG is not the most reliable program and gave her the link to download it from downloads.com (i had just done the same and it works fine). After downloading the program she took the option to reboot and then she says "after rebooting a black screen came up and said it was checking the C:/ Drive for viruses and i just closed the lid putting the laptop to sleep". After trying to turn the computer back on, she can hear the fan come on and the computer booting up but now there is only a black screen and no amount of taking the battery out or re-tries is making a differece. If anyone has any ideas they would be most welcome! Thanks Its a Sony Vaio (one of the CR series i think) OS is Vista

Hi Seth. Already have K-Lite but tried the IE7 reset and now it works! Thanks very much, greatly appreciated.
-
I ran the ESET online scan and that didnt come up with anything. Are there any other things i could try??
-
Thanks maynar, Avast it is.
-
Hey, yes i thought it may be an infection but so far no results. (we seem to have split this discussion into 2 threads lol). Im using IE7 and have got all the latest updates.
-
Thanks Randy. Yes i was suspecting an infection not just from the Windows Media Player fault but also my computer occasionally completely freezes and i can only get out of this by closing my laptop so it goes to sleep and then opening it again. I have performed a malwarebytes scan that revealed nothing and will do the other scans to see if that missed anything. Then i guess i got to choose a new program! Bitdefender, Avast or SuperAntiSpyware? (decided to do the cheap option). Which is best?
-
Thanks maynar. Ill assess the funds to see if they can stretch to a paying anit-virus!

I use to use CCleaner and Abexo Registry Cleaner regularly as routine protection and although i never encountered any major problems im sure it explains a few irritating faults that i had. Though i am thinking i was extremely lucky in not deleting anything important as i only ever gave the files i was deleting a cursory glance. (though i dont think i could tell the difference between unimportant and important files anyway!)

Im have ben using AVG security for some time but an increasing number of people have told me its not reliable. Ive heard good things about NOD32 but i cant seem to find a free version of it. Is it a paying product only? (if not, has anyone got a link to the free version?). If it is a paying product, what is the best free anti-malware program? p.s. im sure there has been alot of discussion on this topic already so apologies for bringing it up again!

Hey Randy, sorry about the lack of info. My laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro. Media Player is version 11. No problems showing in device manager. Im not sure what adapters i have and not sure where i could download the latest drivers. It is only happening with streaming content and only with embedded media player apps. Hope that helps!
-
When streaming videos from the internet through a windows media player app i only seem to get audio and either a blank black or white screen. This first happened on the BBC livesports streams but is now happening on all other video content using media player. Any ideas? Any help will be appreciated, thanks. edit: the OS is XP and media player is version 11.
