How do I remove SP2

I may have to remove the service pack up update to my Windows Professional

OS. How can this be done?

If you need to do something and you are removing SP2 because what you are

doing requires an SP1 cd, then there is a much better way. Post back what

you are trying to accomplish. Also, please state whether you are using XP

Pro x64 SP2 or XP Pro x86 SP2.

Hi Colin, Thank you so much for your quick reply.

I purchased the computer used, with Windows XP professional already installed.

I may have to removed the service pack 2 next week for some online essay

grading that I will be doing for ets (educational testing service). There is

a notice on their website that their online programs/software "supports

Windows XP (except sp2).

I believe mine is 64 bit but I do not know why I think that! How would I

find out?

here is the version of windows XP that I have:

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227.2254:Service Pack 2) Copyright

1981-2001 Microsoft. (That's what it says when I go into My Computer, Help)

Also, when I go into Systems, it says: Windows XP Professional Version 2002

Service Pack 2.

And, in Add or Remove Programs I see these:

MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181) and

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser & SDK

Can the SP 2 simply be removed leaving a "plain" Windows XP OS if necessary?

I think you care confusing the cpu in your machine with the version of the

software. The build you give is 32bit XP Pro and definitely not 64bit. A

64bit cpu runs a 32bit edition of Windows just fine. Your Windows is 32bit.

The entries you report from Add/Remove Programs are for a Microsoft XML

service pack, not the XP Pro service pack. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSXML

If you do not see a listing for XP service pack 2 then you probably cannot

remove it. If you installed Windows from an XP Pro SP2 cd then service pack

2 is integrated and not an update. If so there is nothing to roll back to

since SP2 is the service pack level of your original Windows. One way to

check is to look at the printing on the cd itself. If it says "with SP2"

then it is not possible to go back to an earlier version.

SP2 is several years old. I think you better check with ETS. I can't

believe their software doesn't work with it. For starters, SP1 is now long

out of support and it would be irresponsible of them to require its use.

ETS is not known for irresponsibility.

Based on the version, Version 5.1 (Build 2600...) you do not

have the 64-bit version. You have the standard 32-bit version.

You can only remove SP2 if it was installed over either the

original XP or XP w/SP1, in wich case you can go into the

Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs, and look for Service

Pack 2 in the listing, then uninstall it.

If it's not there, then XP would have been installed from a

CD that was either produced w/SP2 or someone ran the

slipstream process to incorporate it into the install CD,

and you cannot remove it. The only way to revert back it

use a CD with only SP1 incorporated and do a Repair Install.

Thanks Colin. I found the cd I received with my computer. Written in marker

on the outside of the cd is: XP.Pro SP2.

I will check with ets to see if the "except sp2" is still valid. If so,

then I guess I cannot use their software or I need to get a different version

of Windows. Am I correct in this?

Thank you for your reply Theo. You echoed what Colin said. It appears that

the SP2 was installed from an XPPro cd with SP2.

Not sure what I will need to do if I cannot use SP2 but now at least I know

for sure that I have SP2 as an integrated part of Windows (not an add on),

and that it is the 32-bit version.

I really appreciate your taking the time to help me out with this.

If you get another version of XP you may be able to run it in a virtual

machine on your XP SP2 desktop and not have to install it over your current

XP. That would be very simple to do and it would not disturb your present

system. Wait until you check with ETS to see if what you have works first.

If you have to use XP SP1 (which I doubt) post to microsoft.public.virtualpc

and ask about using Virtual PC 2007 (free) to solve your issue.

Repair Install doesn't work to go backwards (SP2 to SP1 or RTM). It will

fail with the message that you are trying to use an older version of WinXP

than the one currently installed.

Thanks for the info. I guess I had not actually tried a

Repair Install to 'downgrade' a current installation. I

knew it would work while booted in to the system.

The service pack levels have to agree between the cd and the installed OS.

That's one of the principal reasons for making a slipstreamed cd.
