One of my PCs won't install w10
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Waiting for a bit of spare time to do the test - won't be long though - meanwhile in fact I am quite getting used to W7 again :) -
One of my PCs won't install w10
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Now managed to get an iso for W10 v1607 so will try loading that onto a new HDD (I will remove and keep the old W7 one just in case!). If that works then I will know for sure if the PC is OK and can then decide if the bios is affecting the loading of v1703 - :) -
One of my PCs won't install w10
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for those suggestions - and to answer a few of the things raised The PC has 6Gb of ram. I used the Dell site to get the correct bios updates and followed instructions - ( I did the same a while back on the other two PCs and all worked fine) It did have w10 installed and running well and it tired to update to the new creator version and failed WIndows 10 media was downloaded directly from MS site using their tool - have tried USB and CD versions but can only seem to get the new creator version! Can't find an older version of W10 on the MS website to download and try which would be the same as was already on the machine before it crashed and should therefore be compatible as that's what was there before- If that worked the I could rule out loads of other things. The media I then used was downloaded using the MS download tool - I tried both 64 and 32 Bit versions from CD and from USB - same failure message on each that PC not compatible Memory test gives no errors and diagnostics reports nothing odd Tried resetting bios to defaults and still same Not replaced bios battery yet - not sure how to do that and not sure what a "reset" is either -
I have 3 near identical Dell 755 PCs - all of the used to run W7 and all three got updated to W10 when this was on free offer a while back. Until now all three PCs ran well with no issues and updated as expected. However, with the new W10 update, two of the PCs updated fine but the third would not - in fact the system crashed and wrecked the OS and resulted in blue screens eery time I tried to reboot. Not to worry I decided to put in a new HDD and reinstall from scratch but that's when the issues stared. Every time I try loading W10 (32 or 64 bit) the installation ends with a message saying the system is not compatible - and that is odd as the other two PCs updated and intaled the new W10 just fine. Looking at the three pcs the only real difference I can see is the Bios version on the one not playing is lower (a17) than the Bios version on the other two(A22). So thought this could be the issue. I tried updating the Bios but this fails every and when running the bios update package, when it tries to reset the bios there is a message saying no file in the memory. I also tries updating the bios one version at a time but this still results in the same message. Could the CMOS battery have anything to do with this? or does anyone have any clues as to why I am experiencing this One thing of about this particular PC is that it always takes ages to boot - and stays on a blank screen with just a curser at the top LH corner for a full minute before actually springing into action. This even happens when trying to get into the setup window. Meanwhile I have been able to load up W7 again with no issues but really would like it to be the same as the other PCs and be running W10. Any ideas or thoughts most welcome.

[Solved] Wi fi card playing up?
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Seems so - now a whole day at full speed with no interruptions or slow down at all - in the end seemingly a very simple thing. Thanks once again for the guidance and help. -
[Solved] Wi fi card playing up?
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I had thought of RFI but seems strange itaffects only one of the routers - unless there is something close to that one, but in my house there is nothing close to it . I have now reset the router channel - it was on auto and now set to 11 - currently working OK -so we will see !!!! -
[Solved] Wi fi card playing up?
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Now things are really odd - after a few hours of normal speed it dropped back to below 1mbps BUT when I tried to hook up to my next door neighbour's wifi I get fantastic speed from the same card? It seems only when my pc is talking to my router via wifi this problem occurs. Its fine on a lan cable and using a powerline - and if I reinstall the card then its fine for a only a while on wifi and yet fine all the time when connected to my neighbours wifi !!!! I've tried simply swapping from one wifi network to the other and on my own it's slow and on my neighbour's - (whose router is much much further away and through the brick walls) it full speed all the time!!! -
[Solved] Wi fi card playing up?

Just to add the card has been running just fine for several hours now without any relapse and is in fact now faster then my cheapo talk-talk power-line adaptors which were already giving me 12 mbps - and I am about the same as the direct lan cable now at almost 15mbps which is about as fast as you can get around this area without going to fibre! -
[Solved] Wi fi card playing up?
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That's what I thought - but am waiting a bit linger as I discovered the original installation disk and the drivers ae different than those W10 loaded when it upgraded. Currently the card is running OK so will wait and see what happens. If no go will invest in a new card although at the moment am using a cheapo powerline adapter which is working really well so no actual need for wi fi at the moment on this particular PC!!! -
All makes perfect sense - many thanks.

I have a Realtek RTL8192CE wi fi card in my Dell OptiPlex and for some reason it has started running very slowly. My internet connection seems fine and on a lan cable runs at around 12mbps and about the same on wi-fi from my windows tablet and ipad.I am pretty close to the router and have good signal strength. I tried reinstalling the card and for about 5 minutes it was running at full speed again - but later had reverted back to just 1mbps - so I tried uninstalling again and reinstalling it and again it was fine for a few minutes than after a while reverted to slow. In desperation I bought a cheap usb wifi dongle and installed that and it works just fine - full speed on wifi !!! - also then I reverted to old card and again full speed - but again only for a short while and now its back to 1mbps Can anyone offer a solution to this or do I simply have a duff wifi card?

I approached the guy who designed and maintains our website and he said the following - does this seem logical to you? "I think it's down to cached IPv6 records on these routers. At some point in the past, there was an extra record which no longer exists and it's been cached. So, because the routers aren't behaving correctly, they're keeping hold of an expired domain name record and as IPv6 records take precedence over anything else, these users were being sent to the wrong place."
-
Alas not so straightforward One Sky, one Clara Net, One BT and one currently unknown! The three known ones all tweaked the IPV6 settings and then could access our site - so it appears the issue may be with the way the site handles traffic from their routers with that setting - is that possible?
-
After another week or so I have been told by virtually everyone who has had this problem that it has been cured by changing the router settings for IPV6 in the way described in my earlier post. So my questions now are : a) Why is this seemingly only an issue our own site? We don't know of any other sites where the same people cannot browse normally. b) Is it a programming issue - or something far more subtle? Any insight on this gratefully appreciated.
-
Some time has passed but now one of my people is able to get onto our site again - his ISP (Sky) advised him to do the following In Firefox or IE type in the web address bar 192.168.0.1 and the search takes you to Sky hub login. Username is admin and password is sky. Click - advanced - LANIP set up - cancel tick on enable IPV6 on LAN side - apply. He said the router rebooted and then all was well. So is there a logical reason why that should be?

Saving my Emails to a backup folder
joddle replied to Lukeduke's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Only just noticed this thread so may a be too late with a reply... but here goes anyway. For Thunderbird users there is a free utility called MozBackup which does the work for you. You can create a complete archive of all your emails as a single file which can be saved anywhere. I use it all the time and find it invaluable. It is also adjustable so for instance you can save emails and all your addresses and passwords or select other things to save or leave out. I have used it for about 10 years now and it works with all versions of Thunderbird and has never let me down. I can even copy all my accounts and emails from PC to PC if I am travelling. -
Using a PDF is not a good way of maintaining a running record. These files are reallyfor keeping a copy of something ready for a record or printing later - and for that they are very good. There are programmes such as Acrobat which are very expensive where you can edit and join PDF files and some free cut down versions on the web such as PDF Creator but these are more limited in what they can do. The best way of keeping a running document is by using a programme designed for that purpose - and only converting to PDF to keep a record or backup of the information. If you really want to join the information then you could scan the outputs of the PDFs as images or use OCR and create a Word or Publisher or similar document of all the entries together then convert that to a single PDF later - not my cup of tea though!

Many thanks for this - I will be in contact with him again soon and hope to get him to try it -- He is not so PC adept so he may not feel able to do that - but we will see.

The site is http://www.osobs.com - it won't be very interesting to most people. One of the affected people is taking his ipad to a friend's house this weekend and will try connecting from there- he will also try and connect from his friends pc. if he cant connect from his frinds PC then we wont know much more!!! If he can connect from his friends pc then he will try also from his ipad. If he can connect with his ipad as well then this points to a problem in his router or with his ISP However if the ipad does not connect then there must be something in his own pc settings both on the Ipad and at home. He has yet to report on rebooting therouter

Well things have not changed - our hosting company has changed the server thinking that might be causing he issue but its still the same Only 4 out of 350 odd people are affected and they are using a variety of devices and browsers but all only get the error when trying to connect to our site. We had hoped changing server might resolve things but the issue is the same for just the same 4 people. One person has tried cleaning his registry and used antimalware and antivirus apps to ensure the machine is clean - but to no avail. I still have to check if he turned off the router to gain a new IP address - will report when I know more Still appealing for any suggestions

Changing a battery on Surface RT
joddle replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for that - however I did not see much of a change in battery life when I upgraded to 8.1 - its just that over the past year or so the amount of charge held in the battery has been getting worse. It used to hold a two or three couple of days at least with regular use but now it won't last a day even with little use! the new battery is not a lot better but I already know that was duff. What I really want to know is where to get a reliable replacement. -
My Surface RT was exhibiting worn out battery syndrome - i.e. it a charge would only last less than a day so decided to change it. Having decided to change the battery it was how to get one - so I looked up several companies on Ebay and found one who could supply to me - Following the Utube tutorial it was pretty easy to change it but when I fired up found the new battery was dead - i.e. had no residual charge at all. Undaunted I tried charging but although it works it does not hold a charge any longer than the old battery I took out! The supplier was informed and gave me a full refund without any fuss but said they could not send a new battery to Spain for some postal restriction reasons but that's where the machine and I now are. So what next? Where do I get a good reliable battery from either in the UK or in Spain? I don't mind doing the change again so long as its worth it in the end - i.e. that I get a good long lasting battery like when I first had the machine. Suggestions/ recommendations most welcomed
