  1. So the issue is resolved. The problem was a piece of software that was installed. Thanks for explaining it Goku and providing the links in case we come across this again.
  2. I just clicked the link and it did crash my open window in IE7 on my Vista. Just testing my system for you Goku.
  3. I'm confused by the last post. Can you explain to me please?
  4. I'm a sinner and a law breaker. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif
  5. I'll bet that did not turn out well. lol
  6. If you want easy access to OE without opening IE one possibility is to create a shortcut on the desktop or the quick launch area.
  7. Hi John. Goku is correct. Sorry about my error. Although I can change a few things like the keyboard layout I could not do what you need. Thanks for pointing that out Goku.
  8. Hi MaYaLa; I'm running Vista Home Premium and can assure you that it is an option. The first link Goku provided has the proper steps. Note that on that page it states you may have to install a display language. That cannot be done in Home Peremium. But if English is already listed then you can change it.
  9. I might say seth that you will find some ways of doing the same thing WAY different. I'll give you an example. Change your System Restore size. It can be done but good luck.
  10. Wheat, barley and hops. Sounds like vegetables to me. It's brown. Meat is brown. Sounds like protein to me. Contains two liquids. Water and alcohol. Sounds like it will hydrate. Contains carbs and sugars. Energy nutrients. Bottom line. Who needs food? You can live without food. Who can live without beer?
  11. Don't give up Quacker. There are others that have this problem too. I have a friend going through this as we speak. There are many possible causes. So don't give up and keep checking back. I'm sure the techs will do their best for you.
  12. Correction. Autobackup is available in all versions of Vista except Basic. Look at the Petri site and scroll down to Disable automatic backup schedule.
  13. While searching for possible causes of that error there were a fair number of people who resolved it by turning of that feature for external drives. I can't say that is the problem but it won't hurt to check. Go to the Control Panel (Home). Under System and Mainenance click Backup your computer. From there check to see if it's setup to auto backup. I can't check any furthur as I don't think this is an option for Vista Home Premium but it should be an option for your version. I'll see if I can find more instructions for you and I'll post back.
  14. I have to admit I don't know how reliable the Vista test is. In your first post the error you got might be related to automatic backup to an external drive. Do you have auto backup enabled?
  15. I just looked your info on crucial. Maximum Memory: 2048MB Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. What that means is that you can use a maximum of 1GB in each of the two slots for a total of 2GB. What do you use your computer for? More memory may not give you any gain unless you're running high end programs.
  16. Hi InFerect: Please post in only one forum. If you are not sure which one we will move it to the correct one to the best of our knowledge. Down to business then. To start with you should open your case and see if there is a build up of dust, dirt or grime anywhere inside. If so post back and we will provide instructions on safe cleaning. You would be surprised at how fast this can happen based on different circumstances. Look for anything around the fans or the heatsink which looks like fins above it. Or any other area which might look clogged. Depending on the games they can be intensive on the hardware and tax them. A dirty computer can cause over heating and shut it down in such circumstances. Start with that. If that is not a problem then tell us the details of your game and your computer specs.
  17. Well let's learn together and share shrimply. I spent a huge amount of time customizing and tweaking Vista. I did finally get it where I like it. Now that seth has it too we should be able to put our heads together and rock and roll. So let's do it. Share our tips and pass them on. Post away.
  18. I sure am but can't say as if I noticed any difference. Unless that's what broke my nvidia control panel. But I really don't know when that happened. Large file transfers might be a little better unless it's my imagination. If you do install SP1 you have plenty of time for a long dinner while it's installing. I'm not kidding. Have a read from Microsoft.
  19. I understand seth. All good points. My only point is that I don't think Windows Defender in itself just because it's on Vista will stop the need for your malware skills here. So don't go running off. OK.
  20. You guys are fast. I'll step out now. You're in good hands flockster.
  21. Hi flockers; First of all look at this support page on lag from their site. Wikipedia says these are the minimum requirements. 1 GHz CPU 512 MB RAM GeForce MX Video card Sound card DirectX 9.0c or above Broadband Internet Connection Typically I would suspect double the RAM and a much faster processor is needed for these type of games. I don't know about the video card. Run this program to help you figure out what you have. SIW
  22. That depends seth. It was available for download for XP. By default in Vista, Windows Defender is turned on as well as autoupdate. In addition it is set to scan without prompt. But since when did protection stop a computer from being infected? So many infections are ALLOWED through. Windows Defender is not an antivirus program but an antispyware program so either way I think you will still have plenty of work to do here.
  23. Welcome to the Vista club seth. I'm glad I have you to bug now. I'm still figuring things out so it's good I can draw on your knowledge.
  24. At this point it might not hurt to run a diagnostic on your memory using Vista. Go to the Control Panel and click on System and Maintenance. Click on Administratitive Tools. Open the Administrative Tools folder. Double click Memory Diagnostics Tool. Choose your option when to run it.
  25. Hi chajun; seth will be back to look at this and explain. Since he knows all the details I think it best that he replies to this. Don't worry it's looking great. Almost there.
