  1. Possibly from here. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/16226-Windows-will-not-Load-Nokia-Suite?p=106843&viewfull=1#post106843 Ovi files definition. Nokia Ovi Suite predated the Nokia Suite by the way. Always use caution when manually deleting program files and folders.
  2. Hi again Slumdog; As it has been five days since anyone has any advice on the Nokia issue I will offer two final possibilities if the Nokia support forum can't help. Try creating another Administrator account and installing from that account. Most software will install across accounts or give you the option to do so. Your user profile account might be corrupted. This could have been caused by malware but more likely by registry cleaners or optimizers which are usually bogus or just out right dangerous unless you very savvy. You seem to indicate that you have used such programs if I am not mistaken. This kind of software can cause all sorts of corruption. It can cripple programs including the uninstallers. As I also said before it can even cause major issues with Windows itself which you seem to have. You should not be getting those errors. Especially since it installed correctly before you took those steps. I hope I am wrong though. Normally I would suggest a specific free version of an uninstaller but at this point it does not appear to be an uninstall issue but rather a permission or privilege issue although you never did say if you tried to install after you disabled your antivirus which is AVG or Malwarebytes trial version or both. Reinstall Windows. After using registry cleaners or optimizers it's almost impossible to predict what they may have done as they are completely unreliable if not out right totall crapware. Modifying the registry should only be done with extreme caution after a registry backup. Optimizers most often delete needed files including so called duplicate files such as needed dll files. The good news is that you are one of the lucky ones. Since you can boot to Windows backup to media everything you need before reinstalling Windows. The bad news is if you have used such programs without guidance or knowledge then even if you do get Nokia to install correctly there is no gaurantee that those programs have not caused other issues which may arise. Malware. Our experts have most certainly took care of that. They are the best in the world. As you said Starbuck was very good. I agree. I wish you well Slumdog. Please let us know if you find a solution. We do care.
  3. Windows Backup and Restore does not clone the drive. It makes an image instead. You won't be able to boot into Windows with the image. But it does have its uses. With an image you can restore your computer from the image or you can use the image to recreate Windows on a new drive. If you can't boot into Windows or if you want to use the image to recreate Windows on a new drive should your old drive fail you may also need to create a system repair disk (especially if it's a new drive) from Windows backup and restore. If you boot from the repair disk you navigate to the option to restore from the image. You select the image on the backup drive and then you restore Windows to the original drive or a new drive. Plastic Nev wrote a great article on how to use Macrium. Making a cloned hard drive using Macrium Reflect
  4. I think that would be best. This is obviously not just an install issue.
  5. Have you ever used a registry cleaner? These can cause corruption of important Windows components. Perhaps a more agressive approach. Create a restore point and backup. Do not empty the recycle bin. MANUALLY CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT 1. Backup important Nokia data files. 2. Remove PC Suite and all related Nokia programs from Programs and Features. 3. Run the Nokia cleanup utility again. 4. Go back to Control Panel and manually delete any Nokia folders from C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86). 5. Reboot your PC to ensure the cleanup is complete. 6. Download and SAVE the latest version of Nokia PC Suite 7.1 7. Temporarily disable your antivirus. AVG and Malwarebytes. 8. Make sure your device is on and set as discoverable. 9. Right click the PC Suite exe file and select Run as Administrator.
  6. Hi Slumdog. Starbuck may be away for a while so I'll answer for now. Have you ever used a registry cleaner? That error can be caused by a corrupt Windows installation. You could try the Microsoft Fixit for programs that cannot be installed or uninstalled. Click on Run now. Also since the Nokia cleanup utility did have partial success try some additional steps. 1. Remove PC Suite from Programs and Features. 2. Use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to open Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and stop the following if present. DATALA~1.EXE( or DataLayer.exe); SERVIC~1.EXE (or ServiceLayer.exe) MPAPI3S.EXE PCSYNC2.EXE 3. Open Windows Explorer and delete the following folders if present: C:\program files\common files\nokia C:\program files\nokia\nokia pc suite C:\program files (x86)\common files\nokia C:\program files (x86)\nokia\nokia pc suite 4. Next run the Nokia cleanup utility. 5. Go to Internet Options in Control Panel and delete temporary internet files. 6. Reboot your PC to ensure the cleanup is complete.
  7. I wish operating systems would be supported by Microsoft longer and that hardware manufacturers would continue to update drivers but I guess there is no financial incentive to do so. I gave up Windows ME years ago but not by choice. My motherboard failed just weeks before Microsoft ended support for Windows ME. It was actually a good thing even though I moved to Vista which most people hated. Compared to ME Vista was great. Due to a thunderstorm I bought a new computer with Windows 7 which is even better. I could have replaced parts both times but considering the costs it was better to put the money toward a much better computer for only a little more money. That being said most antiviruses companies will continue to support XP for a while but you will lose one level of security without Windows Updates. As for what to purchase it really depends on your needs and your budget. I will say this though, Windows 8 will probably come with your system and it is a lot different then anything you are probably used to using. What's a person to do? :) It might be wise to see what others have to say here. We have a lot of great members. Edit: Sorry Ken. I see we cross posted.
  8. The network and video/graphics drivers on the Dell site will only work on Windows 2000 and XP. Since you have Windows 8 installed now those drivers will not work. As far as I can tell there are no available drivers for Windows 8 and your laptop. It might be possible to use an external NIC but less of a chance of using an external graphics card. The cost might be high also. You could roll back to XP but take into account that there will be no more security updates from Microsoft as XP is no longer supported. Considering the above it might be time to buy a new laptop versus throwing money at an old laptop.
  9. It looks like Ken is right again. All the drivers from Dell are for Windows 2000 and XP. Drivers & Downloads for Dell Latitude D610
  10. Since I don't have a Surface or use Windows 8 I can only provide a link that may help for a backup option. http://www.surfacetablethelp.com/2014/04/windows-8-1-onedrive-backup-files-and-personalizationapp-settings.html Game saves on Windows should be stored in the AppData folder which according to the link above also gets backed up. If not go to the AppData folder and manually copy the game folder. Once a game is installed on a new device replace the game folder with the copy you made. My grandson plays Minecraft and in AppData is a folder named ".minecraft". Inside are his game saves and modifications such as texture packs. If he adds a mod he has to copy it to this folder. AppData is a hidden folder. Rather than unhiding it go to "Run" and type "%appdata%" withoute the quotes. Sorry I can't help more.
  11. Do you have another SATA lead you can try? Have you tried re-seating the lead and power supply? The reason I ask is because if Windows does not detect an OS or other bootable option it will go to the next boot option in the BIOS. Perhaps a faulty connector is the problem. If you don't have another SATA lead try switching the leads and power supply connector to see what happens. Another possibility is that the second drive has a fault or the clone itself may have a fault. I'm unclear as to your answer on whether this second drive had Windows installed while it was in this PC or whether it had Windows installed while it was in a different PC. If it was the latter then it might always have boot issues unless the other PC had the exact same hardware like the mobo. It is extremely unlikely that the Basic Input/Output System is the fault.
  12. If it is a normal compressed or zipped folder dragging or copying does the same thing as extracting. It will decompress or unzip the files. It's strange that it does not work for you. I assume normal folders and files are OK. Since you just reinstalled Windows 7 did you get all the Windows Updates? Perhaps one will pertain to your issue. You could also check the manufacturers support site to see if there is an update there that might pertain to your issue. What is your make, model and number?
  13. Good to see you again. Usually with a HP computer you create your own recovery disks or you can use a thumb drive to do the same thing. If you use DVD disks they can not be the re-writable ones if I remember right. You can only do this one time so keep your recovery media safe. If you reinstall from the partition or your recovery media you will not need the COA as either method installs a version of Windows that will only work for your particular model. Look in Programs for a folder named "Recovery Manager" which should have the program for making the disks. If you could give us the exact model of computer (Pavillion, p6230y for instance) a manual can be looked up. The next thing I would do is create a system repair disk in case Windows fails to load. To be really safe you should backup all your data to an external drive as well as create an image of your drives on the external drive once you have everything set up the way you want. There are programs for making an image or you could use the Windows Backup and Restore. Windows Backup and Restore has saved me in the past when Windows would not boot. An image can also be used on a new drive if your laptop drive fails.
  14. DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!! This is a phishing scam. At that price you can get the full Mcafee Suite which includes a lot of things. Yes Mcafee suites will come bundled with QuickClean which includes a registry cleaner but this is definitely not QuickClean. Not only is this a scam we never advise using registry cleaners as they can be very destructive and offer no real value. Most are nothing more then scams or ripoffs. Even reputable ones can cripple programs or even Windows itself unless you have a lot of knowledge. As a matter of fact I don't even see the very old legit ones offered these days because reg cleaners are almost always either worthless, dangerous or outright scams. You were wise to be suspicious.
  15. No problem. I think it's a good idea. I too have thought about the timing in the past. You gave me the nudge to make it so.
  16. I just increased the time to 5 minutes. I think this is better. It's longer but no so long as to cause confusion.
  17. Yes we can change that for groups but not for individual members. Perhaps five minutes would be better. Two minutes is not much time. At least not for someone as slow as me.
  18. Windows Security Center does not always recognize some antivirus programs or third party firewalls. This sometimes happens with Mcafee products and you have to disable the notification for it in the Security Center. Only do that if you are sure that Mcafee AV and firewall are indeed running.
  19. What was the solution to your first problem? Is your new question a problem or just something you want to do? Advanced System Care is not something I would ever use on my system. Are you using the Pro version? As you can see regularly deleting system restore points kind of defeats the purpose of system restore. AppData is a hidden folder and the Local/Temp folder inside is easily removed via Windows or a reputable temp cleaning program. Was PCMeterV0.4exe packed inside a Rar file when you downloaded it? Rar files are usually a delivery method via a torrent program. Are you downloading programs via a torrent? Torrenting can be used to infect a computer?
  20. It seems System Restore is turned on. It seems odd that 31/03/2014 is the oldest point unless you recently cleared all but the latest point. Did you click on "Show more restore points" by any chance?
  21. If I understand right you want to restore to factory settings not recover to an earlier time from a backup etc. HP usually has the recovery files on a hard drive partition. Open Computer to see if the FACTORY IMAGE (D) is visible. On your system the Recovery Manager should open to give you the option to restore to factory settings but for some reason it does not.In this case there are two options you can try. 1. Use the recovery disks that you made when the Recovery Manager worked. Insert the disks and restart the computer and the computer will boot from disk 1. If you did not make the disks you may be able to order them from HP. 2. a. Turn on or restart the computer. b. Press f11 while the “Press <F11> for recovery” message is displayed on the screen.
  22. I too am sorry. Thanks for letting us know. On a side note a while back I re-downloaded a good piece of software that I used before. To my surprise this time it was loaded with almost impossible to remove crapware. Sound familiar. It took me an hour to rid myself of the crap. I feel your pain. Please let us know if you need any help with this as we are truely sorry the poster and the vendor caused you trouble. Our malware experts are truely committed.
  23. Hi Ray. I know we tried this before but like I said it should work. Open IE and make sure it is not maximized on the top right. Drag the edges of the window to full size. Do not close the window. Open a second window and drag the edges to full size. Now click the maximize button in the second window. Now click the maximize button in the first window. Close the first window. Close the second window. Have a look at this video.
  24. The first thing I would try is System Restore. Pick a date before this started to happen. Next thing to try is taken from Microsoft KB Article 950929. Mine is activated so I don't see the option. [h=4]Windows Vista [/h]To start the Product Activation Wizard, follow these steps: Click Start http://support.microsoft.com/library/images/support/kbgraphics/Public/EN-US/VistaStartButton.jpg Right-click Computer. Select Properties. At the bottom of the window, click Activate Windows. In the Product Activation Wizard, follow these steps: Click Use the automated phone system to activate. Click the drop-down menu, select the location that is nearest to you, and then click Next. The Product Activation Center telephone number is displayed at the top of the window.
  25. Thanks everyone. I had a really great day. Sorry Pete the beer is all gone too. :p
