  1. There is a fix from Microsoft for the Flash Player flaw until the update rolls out on September 27th. Adobe warns of zero-day hole in Flash Player | InSecurity Complex - CNET News Other than that they are working on a 64 bit version of Flash Player. Adobe begins 64-bit Flash Player test | Deep Tech - CNET News
  2. Please let us know. If we think of anything else we'll post it. At least you are getting your updates. Best wishes for now.
  3. Shouting out a Happy Birthday to Starbuck. Do have a great one.
  4. If three PC's are doing it after a fresh install and all three have 512Mb of RAM then that suggests that you need more RAM as it's not only the WU check but also the downloads. Keep in mind that after a fresh install pretty much everything is set by default to run at startup and that includes any bundled programs that come with most manufacturers PC's. Get more RAM. Do a fresh install. Uninstall or turn off startup items. Download and install the updates. After that there should be no issue until you start installing programs. Some are resource hungry. I've never seen checking for and downloading updates to be an issue except for cases of not enough RAM, too many startup items and dialup.
  5. In case anyone has not noticed the original poster was banned. A spammer in disguise. In any case the thread was about what people liked about Windows 7.
  6. Erik I prefer to keep these threads relevant to the original posters intent please so as not to get off track. Dalos point is relevant and I agree with him. Both you and Poconos points are valid to some extent but for the vast majority of users turning off Windows and AV updates is a recipe for disaster as it just won't get done otherwise. So it is my opinion that this can do more harm then good for the majority. There are better ways to deal with bad updates then not getting them at all which is what most people will do if it's turned off. In any case this subject is off topic to the original posters thread so lets let it be please. Thanks.
  7. Hi again Jon-Paul. First of all To set Yahoo mail as your default email you'll have to have the Yahoo Toolbar installed. When installing it you might get the option to set Yahoo as the default. I know this used to work for me on previous versions of IE so I assume it will for IE8 too.
  8. Karabiner I'm having trouble not only understanding exactly what the isssue is but also exactly when it manifests itself. Also we seem to be digging for more information. It really would help if you can clarify things more and provide as much information as you can. Is this your card? 1. They both worked fine originally and you tested the monitors. If they both worked originally then that seems to rule out a driver issue but just in case have you gone to the Nvidia site to check for updated drivers. 2. "On happening to play a video across both monitors....." So is this just when playing videos or all the time? 3. You tried switching monitors over and the same DVI port hookup causes the issue. It's unclear if you have tried using just a single monitor on that port and not using the other one. 4. I assume the other port is VGA. Is the other port on that card, another or onboard? 5. Possible heat issue. You said you cleaned it out a week before this happened but you didn't say how dirty it was or how long it had been since you cleaned it. Perhaps the heat damage was done prior to the cleaning. 6. How long has this card been in and have you monitored the temps on a regular basis since the installation? 7. Have you tried the card in a different computer? 8. Your power supply is 300W. You need 350W minimum I believe but you need 550W for SLi. This in itself might be the problem. Anyway I hope the answers to these questions will help all of our members help you. Please be patient as they work for free as their time allows.
  9. Hi Scott. Glad you're getting help.
  10. Hi Erik. Welcome to the forum.
  11. Yes. A good AV will do that. For the most part the answer to the rest of your questions is No.
  12. It looks like you only have one hard drive. Is that correct?
  13. You should backup all your files immediately. It sounds like your hard drive is failing.
  14. This is a pretty specific query related to specific programming language. You might want to run a search for SQL tutorials or forums. Sorry but I don't know SQL.
  15. Hi. From my experience with the viewer you have to open the viewer then browse to the file to get it to work. If it's in a email save the attachment to your documents first.
  16. If this is a optiplex sx260 then you can set it up to boot from usb. System Setup. Have a look at http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/software/10295-wintoflash.html
  17. Goku is a star. If he gets the time to explain why it worked I'm sure he will.
  18. Happy Birthday Doug. Do something crazy today.
  19. Hi. After a look around it does appear to be a Dell service that is causing this. Possibly Dell DataSafe. It may be a Windows update that no longer allows this service to run. In either case I would worry more about your choice of antivirus but not this service. However feel free to post in the malware removal section should you suspect malware.
  20. That's good. If no programs are installed after the format/reinstall and I mean none and the computer is slow then it almost has to be a hardware issue but I'm not sure what. Possibly need more RAM. Possibly a failing drive. Since you reinstalled Windows have you got your Windows updates and are you protected with an antivirus program? If so which one.
  21. I think you should concentrate on data recovery first or fixing the corrupt profile. Once you reinstall chances are everything will be lost.
  22. OK I see that now. After a complete reinstall you should only have Windows and no other programs. If you have other programs then you didn't do a complete reinstall or you reinstalled via Recovery Disks which usually means bundled programs were installed along side Windows. 1 Gb of RAM for Vista Home Basic may be enough for daily computing only so you may need more. It could also be that the memory is starting to fail. Have you tried the Windows Mememory Diagnostics? Windows Vista: How to Scan / Test your RAM or Memory with Windows Vista Memory Diagnostic Tool
  23. My point is if you have two antivirus programs installed they are probably both running so they can offer real time protection. If so they may well be conflicting which can cause problems. Look at your notification area at the right bottom of your screen. Do you see a Norton and Avast icon?
  24. Two graphics cards. Two monitors. Two cursors on each monitor. The monitors work ok if only one is hooked up. You tried each monitor individually on each card. Is all of the above correct? What is the power supply? What ports are you using? Are you using both monitors on one card or both cards?
  25. To affirm what Nev is saying I have seen a faulty CD/DVD drive cause windows not to boot or to boot extremely slow even though the first boot device was the hard drive. It was my brothers. Once disconnected it worked great. However that drive was not a SATA.
