  1. If you think it might be malware start a thread in the Malware Infection Removal section. Do you have both Norton and Avast running at the same time?
  2. Hi. I have a feeling these two things might be related since the issues started at the same time so I merged your two threads into this one.
  3. I got this from the Acer support. How to recovery your system from bootup Locate the Alt key, to the left of the space bar, and F10, on the top row of keys. Power the system on. When the system is powered on, tap the Alt and F10 keys together at the same time when the Acer splash screen appears. It should state "Please wait a moment..." with the Acer logo in the upper left hand corner. At the eRecovery Management menu it will ask you how to restore. Click on the restore option you would like to use.
  4. The pictures are missing Frank. Try using the Attachments and Images The attachment option works good. Let me know if you need help.
  5. That's actually a good idea. I forgot that Vista and 7 will ask if it finds two files or folders with the same name.
  6. April 2014 is when I think there will be no more updates for XP Home. I lost hardware and software too when I went from Windows ME to Vista but I found great free software to replace it. 7 can be configured to look a lot like XP. Live mail can come close to looking like Oulook Express if configured. If you need help configuring anything let us know by starting a thread on the different areas. And we can also suggest some free software should you need it. I've already seen some things that don't support XP and there will be more in the future. So it's not just Microsoft updates. If you put on XP you'll need to make sure you can find all the right drivers if they even exist and buy a retail version of XP. Once unsuppported I would reinstall 7. You will likely need the disks for that. Personally now that I have Windows 7 I will never look back. I love it now that I have it the way I want it. As for Live mail look at it's Tools>Message rules>Mail. You can set up rules to send different mail to a specified folder of your choosing. As I said though I don't suggest downgrading.
  7. Yes Barry I got that email too. Twice. I actually had the chance recently to personally look into this as my stepsons hotmail started sending out spam. Not only did he have a trojan but his hotmail had been hacked. A change of password might be in order.
  8. I agree. It's a sign that her computer or one of her contacts computers is infected. It only appears that the mail is sent from her account. I would have her check for infections and also notify everyone in her address book that they may be the one infected and not her.
  9. Good ones. LOL
  10. Actually you can copy in command prompt. Click the title bar (you may need to right click) to see the edit>copy menu. If you can't hilight the text you want to copy select "mark" from the title bar menu first.
  11. Can you please find your printer from the Epson support site so we can identify it. Please supply a direct link to the support page. Can you please verify what operating system you are attempting to use it on? In post one you stated that you can print but you get an error. In post four you said you upgraded from the LQ-300 to the LQ-300+II which I can't find. Also in post four you stated that you fiddled with settings and now you only have a problem printing from Word. The point is that the first thing that needs to be determined is if your printer is even compatable with your operating system. For that we need a link to the Epson support page for your printer. Once we figure that out we can continue. If it is not compatable, that is no drivers or software, then you can fiddle all you want or try third party drivers which is usually fruitless. You may have got it to work but with errors because it is not compatable. After all there is no way we know what you mean when you say you fiddled with it. To me this seems to say that you have managed somehow to get an unsupported printer to work some what. If the printer is unsupported then you really have no choice but to buy a supported one. You need the drivers. Eventually no one is going to spend many hours writing software for old devices. No easy fix I'm afraid. Unless you want to invest years learning code and implimenting it on a case basis. So anyway like I said. Link us to the printer so we can see if it's possible. If it's not supported then it's not a Word problem but a software, driver, printer problem.
  12. Is it just me or are we getting a little off track on this thread? :)
  13. What is the model and number of the Compaq? What methods have you tried? What happens when you try?
  14. Good to hear. All I did though was provide the link. Synapse was right about the issue and the right method to correct it.
  15. I agree with all of the above. I do have a couple additional points to make though. A good AV will flag most viruses and trojans but if the user allows a downloaded file to open or allows bundled software that comes with malware then in effect that person has allowed the infection to bypass security. Peer to peer as Plastic Nev noted can infect via both methods. In particular downloaded RAR files seem to be the most common method of transfering malware through Peer to Peer. Social networking sites such as Facebook are another cause if one clicks on malicious links or downloads attachments through such. Again just using caution is the key. Look at some of the threads in one of our sections. Security Warnings and Alerts
  16. I think they are permanently deleted from their servers. Even if they weren't I doubt that they would help you since they are a free service.
  17. There are a lot of ways of doing this but to keep it simple I would do this: Connect the original drive to a working computer. Slave it if it's EIDE or just plug it in if it's SATA. Also you can get a caddy and put the drive in that and plug it into a USB port. Now you should be able to copy the data to media or USB stick. Note that you may have to "take ownership of the files" after copying to the new computer. Reconnect the original drive in the original computer. Go into the BIOS. See if the BIOS detects the CD/DVD drive. If so set the CD/DVD drive as first boot option. Save the change and exit the BIOS. Reinstall Windows. Update Windows. I'm sure others will offer other options so you may want to wait.
  18. The only thing I could find is the LQ-300 Impact Printer. Is this yours? If so it's ancient (serial port connection) and hasn't been supported since Windows 98. Epson LQ-300, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc. I'm not aware of any new printers being sold with serial port connections.
  19. Hi blue. Judging by the lack of response I'm guessing not many people here, including me, use this. Using the Incredimail faqs or forums is probably the best way to start. However I did find this at IncrediMail Help Center: Email Account Settings Assistant - Additional Options Include this account when receiving mail. This checkbox enables you to determine whether or not IncrediMail will check this email account for new mail. This is particularly useful when you have several email accounts but wish only to check specific ones for new mail when performing a Send/Receive action. Note: You can also configure this option in the 'Mail Accounts' dialog, opened by clicking the 'Tools' menu and selecting 'Accounts...'.
  20. All I can say about PC Guard by Virgin: We've had a lot of threads where it caused a lot of problems. The Radial Point aspect if I recall correctly. Also as noted there is better out there according to well known security analysts.
  21. Hi. It does seem you are in a bit of a mess. As this may very well be malware related I would advise you to wait for one of our malware team members to look at this issue. In the mean time for their benefit can you clarify if you are able to boot to safemode. From safemode there are many options but please don't try them until our security team reviews this issue.
  22. Microsoft kb article 322389 should help you Sinbad. It says what Synapse stated about doing SP2 first as well as how to turn on automatic updates. If you want to download and install the updates manually it has direct links to the downloads.
  23. Hi. Can you describe the noise? Hard drives and fans are the only moving parts in computers. So it could be either one that caused the noise. Run the computer with the case open to determine if ALL the fans remain running ALL the time. You don't tell us what computer you have so I assume it's a desktop of some sort.
  24. Good to hear Salinger. As Jelly Bean also pointed out yet another possible cause. At least you discovered this problem shortly after a reinstall. All's well that ends well.
  25. I thought it was explained here. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/graphics-cards/10293-upgrading-my-graphics-card.html If you want to upgrade you need to buy a new notebook. If not please explain before posting more.
