  1. Hi Salinger. There are many reasons for updating errors and some probable fixes too. You said you recently reinstalled Vista. I assume this is not an upgrade installation. Did you immediately go to the Control panel and run Windows updates before doing anything else? Are your date and time settings correct? Did you install anything else or surf the web before you updated? Many malware infestations can block updates that is why I ask if you ran updates before doing anything else. Have you ran any virus, trojan, adware or spyware scans? Do you have an active updated antivirus program? Yes there are other possibilities but since this is a freshly reformatted machine it might be easiest if you just reinstalled Vista and tried updating first before doing anything else.
  2. It's good to hear you are protected. I actually miss my ME. Once configured properly it worked great for me. I only wish I could help you with yours.
  3. Did it use to work? Is this the first time you used Firefox? If it used to work you could try uninstalling and reinstalling. Old Version of Firefox 2.0.0.20 Download - OldApps.com I'm sure you know if you are using ME and IE6 or Firefox 2.0 then your system and browsers are no longer supported and as such you are at an extreme risk of infection. Do you have an updated antivirus? If so which one? I'm sorry I can't look into this more but I left Windows ME when Vista came out. The same goes for Firefox 2.0.
  4. You should know. It's your software. You've been very busy spamming forums with it. Most forums have already deleted your posts. So will this one.
  5. Sorry Armageddon you posted while I was typing. I hope that those drivers help him.
  6. How did your neighbor pur XP on? Did he buy you a XP disk? The problem may well be the XP installed. If you reinstall Vista that came with it you can rule out any conflicts and you will also be reinstalling the correct drivers at the same time. If Compaq has updated drivers for Vista you can download from them directly. Vista is very stable so if it was crashing it's likely due to failing hardware or something installed later. Of course not all machines have the best specs even though the manufacturer will sell them. Such as more RAM. The point is though that since Vista came pre-installed the XP installation may or may not be the problem but I think we have to determine if it is first. Do you have the XP disks? Do you have all the Windows updates?
  7. The download from FPCH is the XP Recovery Console and is an iso file.
  8. Bob if you have Open Office you can export a document as pdf.
  9. Hi blue. I'm not on Vista at the moment but try this; Go to Accesories in your All Programs. Right click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Type in powercfg /hibernate on (note the space before the / and before on)
  10. Hi. Amazon.com is a legitimate business where others can sell goods. Unfortunately just like on e-bay some sellers are not so honest.
  11. Where there is one infection there is usually more. Without seeing the Malwarebytes log or any other logs it's hard to be sure if you are clean or not. Just in case I'm going to move this to the Malware Removal section. Thanks everyone.
  12. This is the link to the thread that the poster refers to. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/windows-vista/2851-vista-boot-problem-pc-freezes-during-boot-up-5.html
  13. I'm going to leave this thread in order for new mods practicing deleting as spam and delete other posts by user. Permanent ban of course.
  14. There are a couple of possible solutions in this microsoft article. Was this an office update or a windows security update that generated the error?
  15. Hi Trazza. I can't think of a single application in any shape way or form that would allow such a thing or any Windows keyboard commands that can do it for anything. However if you can be more specific on exactly want you want to do with what perhaps someone can provide a slightly easier way of doing it.
  16. We have a security team to work on the logs. As you know not everyone is qualified to deal with them. The team is formally trained to deal with them. It sure is nice having them on our side. To see who they are View Forum Leaders
  17. System Restore will not affect the new password. Also System Restore can be undone unless you do it in safemode. You don't say what browser you are using but if it's Internet Explorer try using Firefox as a test or try How to Reset or Restore Advanced Settings in Internet Explorer 7 The same steps work in Internet Explorer 8. Reset will rid you of any toolbars. I've seen add-ons like toolbars slow IE. malware is viruses, trojans, rootkits, adware, spyware etc.
  18. Good to hear Jim. I hope you get your other issues sorted. As for me I need glasses for everything not just reading. Best wishes.
  19. I've always been afraid to choose the compress files option. I was wondering if it could be undone. Thanks for the info.
  20. Dual Boot is not free. I think there might be better options. I like free. :) I don't know how you reinstalled but like afixedPC said it does seem that you have created a dual boot when what you wanted was a clean install. If it were me I would look up the FAQs for your computer and perform a clean install from scratch in order to get it right and avoid issues in the future. I think that might be what you have in mind. Do you know the make, model and number of your PC? Do you have any disks? I've never set up a dual boot so I can't help with that I'm afraid. Others on our forum have however. Therefore I will leave it to those that know.
  21. Jim if you go to Dell support you can get all your drivers. Use your Dell service tag to make sure you get the right ones.
  22. Just to try to help master Dalo, with Compaq tapping the F10 key is usually the correct key.
  23. If you are looking for the normal.dot file you will have to show hidden files and systems files first. Control Panel>Folder Options>View Uncheck hide>Apply>OK Do a SEARCH for normal.dot It should be in Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates Since 2007 didn't solve the problem you might want to backstep and uninstall that or System Restore to before you installed it. One step at a time.
  24. Hi sonya. I don't think Windows XP Home has native support for burning DVD movies, just burning DVD data files. Since you used Movie Maker you need to save your movie in a format such as AVI or WMV then use the burning software that you probably have to make a DVD movie. Make sure your software supports the file type. Depending on what your computer is it probably came bundled with basic software to work with your DVD burner. Common types include Roxio, Nero or Cyber Link. However without knowing more it's possible that your combo drive can only burn CD's and read DVD's, not write to DVD. That would explain why it can't detect a blank DVD. Many older XP systems only have a read DVD drive.
  25. Does Word open with a blank page? If so then it may be a normal.dot file problem.
