  1. Do you mean you installed XP from a disk meant for a different computer? It sounds like you might have used a Dell disk from another computer and that's why the drivers are incompatable.
  2. leon has reported that the solution worked. Thanks leon.
  3. I really hate to say this but I must. This is taken from the following HP link. A Password is Required Causing the Computer to not Startup or Boot in Windows XP - HP Customer Care (United States - English) Power On The Power On password is set in the System BIOS options. It prevents unwanted users from accessing the computer. By default, HP does not set the Power On password. If you set the Power On password in the System BIOS options you will be prompted for it immediately after you power on the Notebook PC. If this password is forgotten, a repair at an HP certified repair center is required to reset the computer. Please contact HP to schedule a repair. This service is not covered by the warranty So the problem I have is that the guy you bought it from does not know the password and HP says they don't set one by default. This implies that the possibility exists that the guy you bought it from may not have owned it as you say "Neither myself or the man I bought it off know the password". If it's a Windows logon password and not a BIOS password then it's still the same situation. The seller would or should know it. A comp that's playing up is suspect too in light of everything else. As much as I hate to say it this might be a case of the seller not having rights to this computer. That's why we have certain rules pertaining to password issues. Please read Rle 5 of The Rules to see why.
  4. Avast HOME edition does not seem to offer that function. PROFESSIONAL edition does. See the link below. Other questions Doing a manual scan once in a while may be a good idea. As for me I only do it when I suspect an issue or am bored. But for most people I suggest scanning once in a while. By the way I am not currently using Avast.
  5. Hi GameGuy. If you go to that link and click on the Specifications tab it says; Windows XP (SP2 or higher) or Windows Vista (32 bit only) So although Windows 7 is not listed it might work on it since it's NT but the fact it says 32 bit only and it doesn't say Windows 7 I wouldn't trust it and doubt it would work. What furthur bothers me is if you search their kba it does not even mention that it works with Vista but does say it works with Windows 2000 Pro. So if they can't even supply proper information which is conflicting then I would look elsewhere if it was me. It does not look promising based on what you ask and they provide.
  6. danzil refers to starfox's other post in this thread http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/security-questions-av-firewalls-etc/8577-help-please.html#post59606 where the question was asked "Can someone please advise me on a free anti virus and firewall sites"? I pointed out our suggested programs that we think work well. starfox for purposes of checking for and removing malware please continue in this thread. Thanks everyone.
  7. I like my hotdogs "charbroiled" so I'll take it.
  8. I totally agree with Match. Like I said before AVG Free not only misses too much it can't even remove everything it finds based on my personal past experience. And like Match said I've had great success with Avast and Avira when it comes to detection and removal.
  9. Windows 7 will already have all the drivers you need for it. The software if there was any would be for additional mouse functions that some have. If it doesn't work on two machines it's probably the mouse itself.
  10. You could boot into the BIOS and see if the drive shows there or look inside to see if the cables to the drive are solidly connected. I usually disconnect them then reconnect them.
  11. Sorry igrek. We had some forum issues last night and your original post problem with unwanted antivirus program was accidentally deleted. I've corrected that if you care to continue this in the original thread you can.
  12. I suggest waiting for chiaz but for now try going to folder options in control panel and tic to show hidden files and folders and untic hide protected operating systems files. The file structure in that folder can be misleading so it might be hard to find. If you use search it should find it there as it is in the log you submitted. I know it can be hard to find but it does appear to be there. Actually you shouldn't need to change the folder options but I always do.
  13. Thanks for the tip cpw. By any chance do you have a link to AVG on this problem?
  14. Hi Chris. We are all here for each other. I've learned a lot here. So much I don't know too. Good luck to you too.
  15. That's great cpw. danzil really knows his stuff. I always listen to him. Thanks for letting us know. Not only will danzil appreciate that but so will other members who have the same problem. Well done.
  16. I moved this thread to the malware section. chiaz may want to take a look at it. I think the steps provided by danzil will take care of the problem just fine. If not or if you want chiaz to investigate your system furthur don't hesitate to ask.
  17. George it's good to see you have great friends. PM me on your issues and I'll do what I can to try to sort it.
  18. Hi TJolly. I must say it's good to have you here. Thanks for joining and helping out.
  19. Good call jamesbrown. Thankyou.
  20. :p I'm really laughing at the hot dog one. I'm sure Plastic Nev will be pleased too. It's always nice when we can help but it's even better when we do it as a team. Well done Kev.
  21. Try searching for .eml
  22. madon this could be a hardware issue. A failing hard drive or even a faulty cd/dvd drive can cause boot slow downs. It could also be a virus or other form of malware. What malware protection do you have? What is your make of computer? One other thing catches my eye and that is you have XP but it seems your computer is only a bit over a year old. Computers have not shipped with XP for some time now. So if you could please give us some info on antivirus software and system specs like make/model/number we may have more to go on. If this is a malware issue we have a fantastic expert looking in on the malware section posts.
  23. Hi grimly. Are you talking about logging on to web sites using Internet Explorer?
  24. 1. I've known plenty of people that had issues with AVG Free. From my personal experiences it failed to detect a lot of malware and even what it did find it often could not remove it. 2. Comodo firewall does just fine from what I hear. I never tried the antivirus. 3. I have used Avira AntiVir and Avast and found them both to be quite good. 4. Yes you can safely download it Trazza. Please download and install protection before doing anything else. 5. As starfox noted Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free is a good malware scanner. I've used Spybot a lot but prefer to use SUPERAntiSpyware Free over Spybot as it seems to detect much more. 6. For some free basic real time protection against malware which you can run along side of an antivirus I suggest Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender. I use both.
  25. goodyear I would suggest you make or obtain the original Vista recovery disks before you install XP. Just in case for some reason he wants to go back to Vista that needs to be done prior to installing XP.
