  1. Hi Trazza. You will find some free ones at Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Recommended Security products Just make sure you download the free versions.
  2. Those are the usual fixes for update problems so I'm fast running out of ideas. Since most of those are for Office have you tried reinstalling Office? Also try the stand alone installers. For instance: KB972581 KB973636
  3. Hi arcola. I agree there are no dumb questions. There are easy ones and hard ones but no dumb ones. So please feel free to ask anything.
  4. Hi goodyear. Glad you found us. Everyone will try their best for you.
  5. That's great james. I haven't heard of that one so I'm glad you posted back to let us know. That may very well help someone else in the future so thanks for letting us know. I'm glad you figured it out and I hope to keep seeing you around the forum.
  6. Hi leon. Open IE from a shortcut such as from the quick launch area. Drag the edges to fill the screen. Do not close that window. Open a new window from the same shortcut. Drag the edges to fill the screen. Click the middle icon top right to maximize the second window. Go to the first window. Click the middle icon top right to maximize the first window. Close the first window. Close the second window. Try it now. The same steps work for many other windows functions such as documents or control panel.
  7. Also check your scanner software. Some will give you option to scan to file as pdf. Open Office can do it too. But knowing Tootech his program is likely quite good.
  8. The filter issue is caused by installing or uninstalling certain burning programs. In spite of what the fix reported or what device manager says I would try a different drive or try yours in a different computer. Error reporting on computers is far from an exact science. I've seen faulty drives do exactly what you describe.
  9. I'm not exactly sure what you want or if it's possible but I would think the first thing to check is if you have the proper fonts installed on your computer. Go to Fonts in Control Panel and look.
  10. So far your malware thread looks ok. I'm a bit at a loss here. You could try removing the account then adding it back. I know that in OE that sometimes solved glitches. Or you could try a different account and see what happens. Or uncheck to save. Close Windows Mail. Reboot. Recheck to save. As a side note some third party applications can delete them when running cleanup.
  11. How smoking can ruin your Mac This would be a good selling point for a PC. Notice that they mention nicotine as being listed as "hazardous" by OSHA but don't seem to have a problem with other "hazardous" materials commonly used in households. Or is it maybe that they think a Mac is only suitable to be used in a pristine environment? Does that mean no frying foods in your kitchen? What about taking it to work in a factory that uses carcinogenic chemicals? Many new carpets release hazardous fumes for some time after being installed. Does this mean using a Mac in a brand new office setting can void a warranty? I don't see any mention of this being a dirt or grime issue so I guess it's ok to hand dust your furniture, vacume your rugs, use it at a construction site or outdoors. Unless of course you count car exhaust as "hazardous". I wonder what they would say if you used it regularly on a bus that burns diesel fuel. And just to get even more silly would they service it out of warranty? If I spilled coffee in it would they service it if I paid for it? Look at the list of chemicals in coffee before you answer that. But I'm not done yet. What about the compounds that are already used in a computer? Need I say more?
  12. danzil is right. Often times that will fix the problem. Give it a try. It won't hurt. Thanks danzil.
  13. Sorry mtav. You're right. 4.5 is the latest version. Does not apply messages like that means you probably already have it installed. Also the Windows Update service is the correct one. Temporarily stop the service. Next delete the files. Those are from previous downloads. Sometimes doing that will force a fresh download of failed updates.
  14. I've been using Mcafee VirusScan Plus for years and it has served me well but as you said it's not cheap. You should only be running one firewall on the computers themselves. So if the Mcafee firewall is enabled check to see if the Windows firewall is disabled. The Mcafee firewall is better than the Windows firewall.
  15. Have you tried downloading it and save it from the link I provided above? I'd be interested to see the results of that. Then try installing it from the saved file.
  16. cpw this is a really old update that was released on June 28, 2005. Software update 898461 installs a permanent copy of the Package Installer for Windows version 6.1.22.4 Also it is for XP SP1 and SP2. Does this mean that you never installed SP3 yet? Try downloading it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=50C334E1-9A67-4B99-A65A-069B79267856&displaylang=en
  17. Hedge are you still using Limewire or any other P2P program? Do you have any software obtained via P2P? Do you have or can you download Windows updates? Did you ever resolve your Microsoft Office update problem? Did you ever resolve your Flash problem?
  18. Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger and delete everything in there. Go to Live Essentials. Click Download. Click Run. Also make sure you have all your Windows updates first.
  19. mtavs original post is at http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/email-issues/8534-empty-sent-items-folder.html. I asked him to post here because I don't trust his security suite and his issue didn't seem normal. After the latest posts here and there I'm confused as to exactly what the issue is at this point.
  20. OK Now I'm confused as to exactly what the issue is.
  21. Considering a few things you mentioned I think now is a good time to post in the malware removal section and then check with your ISP for possible issues. What is your ISP?
  22. Try shutting down your firewall and antivirus. And Windows Defender.
  23. Hi Hedge. After uninstalling it go to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger and delete everything in there. When downloading the wlsetup-custom.exe file choose to Run instead of Save. If that's what you tried and it didn't work try Save and run it from the saved location. Also you said the file was Downloads\wlsetup-custom.exe.part The correct file you need is Downloads\wlsetup-custom.exe Get it from Live Essentials.
  24. Keep up the good work Nev.
  25. I was out of town but happy birthday Bob.
