Wireless connected but NO internet
RandyL replied to VNex's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Does AVG Internet Security 9 have a firewall? Were you using that AND the Windows firewall? Have you tried temporarily disabling ALL of AVG? -
One thing I have read is that there are still unresolved issues with IE8 and Youtube. Uninstalling IE8 may correct this but I can not say for sure. Also uninstalling IE8 may or may not cause other issues. Proceed at your own risk and even then set a restore point first. As it has been a few months I doubt a System Restore point before this issue arised will be available but you could check. Keep in mind that you would have to choose a point that is older than what is listed in the first window. But seriously this might be an IE8 issue. But so hard to be sure.

help to get rid of p.a.v.av pest please
RandyL replied to mrs_d's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi MATTY; This is an old thread so there won't be any replies. Keep in mind though that as you said this is a serious infection. As such a complete and proper cleaning is the right thing to do. Most likely there are also other serious infections as well. Ending proccesses and deleting files is not nearly enough especially considering the morphing of this infection. The good news is that we now have a fully trained security expert on staff to deal with these issues and all their complexities. -
It seems you have more going on than just youtube problems but this might address that issue. See if this has anything that might help. Goku provided these links some time ago. Follow the instructions carefully. Flash install problems - how to fix Flash player installation problems such as the Youtube error - Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. General Error Messages : JavaScript / Flash Player error - YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. I would run the uninstaller, reboot then reinstall from the stand alone installer. But read everything and try everything.

connections to Router via cable in Vista64
RandyL replied to j50jwr's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Good to hear John. I might guess that the front usb ports don't have a power supply or limited supply. It might also be that the controllers for them are corrupted. You might want to look in device manager and uninstall the controllers. After a reboot they should be reinstalled. It won't hurt anything. -
Windows live mail and yahoo, windows 7
RandyL replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I wish I could set up my yahoo email to work with Windows Mail which is the email client for Vista but here in the USA I would need a premium yahoo account not the free one. So I can't check the settings for you. The error does appear to be for the outgoing mail settings though. Either way if it's the same yahoo account and the same ISP then it has to be a setting that is not the same as those on your other computers. Unless of course you have a third party program blocking it. Check all your settings again including advanced options. Also check your "outgoing mail server requires authentication" settings. When all else fails delete the account from Windows Mail and recreate it. -
XP keeps restarting on its own
RandyL replied to simbasgang's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I don't think you ever managed to a full system recovery since you said you never lost your data files. Untill you do I don't think this can be resolved. One more thing. After you do manage to completely reinstall Windows don't install any programs untill after you get Windows updated. And even then you might want to reconsider what you install. Webshots for instance. -
Sorry if I'm off topic in this off topic thread. :):) Can you believe I never owned a cell phone of any type? I was twenty five years old and still had a rotary dial phone. I finally got a "wireless" phone ten years ago. :p Yes that's right. I'm old enough to remember when NBC first started broacasting TV in color. And now you know why I don't answer questions on topics such as this. Sorry but I thought you all might like a good laugh at my expense. :)

Hi fenog2; Glad you joined up. Help out where you can. In my opinion there are very few experts but anyone willing to help and learn is worth more than most experts. In other words feel free to post.

I agree. I've used it many times myself.

New Build Questions & Suggestions?
RandyL replied to hypnosis75's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Quad or Duo that is the question.:) The other day I was looking at pre-built computers and it seems the major brands and outlets are pushing quad. Is there a reason for this in the future? I don't know. What is the price difference? Is it better to save pennies now to spend dollars later? Tough questions since no one knows the future of computers or can anticipate their own future needs. Also I thought that Windows 7 Release Candidate downloads for testing has now been discontinued since it is due to be released Oct 22. Either way it's a short term fix. You have some good choices to choose from from our fine members. I know it's a tough choice. Let them know if you have any more questions. -
spilt wine caused keyboard problems, pls help
RandyL replied to Helen's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I've had all sorts of liquids cause problems on electrical components in all sorts of devices. Beer, wine, sodas, koolaid and water for example. In a few lucky cases no damage was done after drying but not usually the case. There is also the issue of corrosion and acidic or alkaline materials. In some cases the devices worked fine. In most cases they only worked fine temporarily. In one case I got free movie channels for a week before the cable box quit working altogether. There might be unseen damage which is impossible to determine without inspection or cleaning or replacing of parts. But the bottom line is that going inside a laptop for all but basic repairs is probably not a wise thing to do unless you are skilled or confident. That's my opinion. -
So for now purchase the IDE.

Guys I think that any discussion on other areas might best be suited in off topic perhaps.

Hi jamesbrown; Please perform the steps suggested by Goku in his last post as they are basic steps and should be the first thing to start with. Also uninstallling old unused programs can help as Goku mentioned especially if they are running at startup and using resources. If after performing those steps and temporarily disabling Norton the computer is still slow it might well be wise to run some security checks as Goku said to see if malware might be causing it.

P.C seems to keep getting infected
RandyL replied to pc plodder's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Since you say you do online banking I'm going to guess that you are using Internet Explorer as most banks require that browser. If so open IE and click file. (press the Alt key if you don't see file) Use the import export wizard to export your favorites as a file. Do the same for every user account. Whichever way you decide to go you should periodically backup things like favorites, address books if you use an email client and calendars as well as data files. Not only is this useful should you need to reinstall it can also be used to transfer to another computer. -
Hi Sebastian; What type of search results are you talking about? What exactly do you need to do and why?

Advice and thoughts on this software please guys
RandyL replied to pc plodder's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
You all make good points including the fact that the only real way to make sure the system is clean especially when it is an infection of this type that can compromise banking details is to run a full reinstall. Since pc plodder has now also posted in Malware Removal P.C seems to keep getting infected lets move on to that thread and continue there if you don't mind. -
P.C seems to keep getting infected
RandyL replied to pc plodder's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi again pc plodder. Your related thread is here. Please wait for the security team to look at this. I think this is a serious issue in that the Trojan.Ambler is designed to do exactly what you have said. I can only guess that the reason that you don't have it and she does even though your security is the same is because it was allowed to bypass security. Perhaps by an installed program. In any case you did the right thing by having her account details changed and running the scans that you did. As for a full cleanup and stopping this computer from being constantly reinfected I would ask that you do this for the Security Team. Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and save it to your desktop. Download HJTInstall.exe to your desktop. Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis . Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply. Notes: Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should -
