Yes as Wolfey says the cable that you are referring to is for older drives and is only intended to be used if you plug headphones into your CD-DVD drive and listen that way - no one has done this for years and years - so ignore the wire

Is HP developing its own operating system to avoid Windows? According to a recent BusinessWeek article they’re at least looking into it. The company has supposedly assembled a group of engineers to quietly work on several different ways to avoid a dependence on Microsoft, such as developing software that will essentially bypass certain elements of Vista or even building a competing OS altogether. The operating system would reportedly be Linux-based, but be simpler and easier to use than most Linux distributions available today. HP isn't confirming the report, but it certainly wouldn’t be the first time a Microsoft partner steps up support for Windows alternatives, as many netbook vendors are now offering Linux as the default OS – albeit they are far less popular that Windows-based options. If you are running Vista the Windows firewall is strong enough for most users.

Do you not get any notifications when the OS starts? it normally says that its trying to install drivers etc. if not go to device manager and remove the driver for the CD-RW and restart the PC - windows should then find the drive and install the right driver

You need to find out what the MOBO (Motherboard) inside it is - if your friend changed it then it will still be an HP board - run a program like Everest free edition and that will give you the MOBO serial.

You can also buy a cable that does this for you, but in my eyes is an unnecessary cost - do what Wolfey posted as it is far better.

Depending on the AV that you have the windows firewall is more than adequate for most users

You need the Free space as it acts as like a buffer to move files. uninstall things you dont need and see whats what after that if you still do not meet the 15% then leave well alone as you could cause some serious damage to the file structure of the HDD

Have you installed the MOBO drivers? Computers will run extremely slow without these and the chipset driver, which you need to download.

Ambient room temp is only some of the equasion - you may need a bigger case with more fan slots available. go on take a pic and post - you may just be able to mount some fans with a z-tie!
