  1. If your documents are in the same place then there is a date modified The easiest way would be if you know the name of the document and just CTRL and F to find it
  2. You should still get the POST (BIOS screen) as the OS is loaded after this point. Are you usre that the CPU and the RAM you are using is supported on this new board? Check the documentation or list the:- MOBO make and model CPU and RAM
  3. Forget what the software says, if you can only physically see two then just get the largest sticks you can that the board supports (be very careful as around the DDR 2700/3200 era) most of the RAM on ebay now is ECC and this is for servers and not desktops. Check your Motherboard documentation as the board 'should' be able to take at least 2GB (possibly 4) of PC3200
  4. Looking at the specs of the PC, the GPU will help, but you really need to consider upgrading the whole system, 1GB of RAM is not enough since XP SP3
  5. From reading your post I have no idea what the issue is. Most PCI cards draw power directly from the MOBO via the slot itself Any cables that come from the card will attach to the MOBO for data transfer purposes the same way that USB ones do:- They connect to the 1394 port on the MOBO http://www.eworldsale.com/images/products/computer/cables/AA77333a.jpg
  6. 3.5 inch drives require a power source and the USB rail on your PSU won't cut it get an external caddy and use that :)
  7. Do you have any disks, or a recovery partition on the device? If you keep pressing F8 as the PC boots, you should get the safe mode etc options, as well as last known good configuration (try this one) There can be problematic updates, but they normally become problematic when the PC is turned off when doing the updates
  8. You will need to add an Ethernet card, either with or without WIFI capability and then you should be good to go then. As for gaming, you may just be able to play flash games on the net, but you wont be playing much more than that on it
  9. Have you tried to remove a stick of RAM
  10. You cant use sleep to shut down a PC, it literally just makes the PC sleep so that when you come back and press the keys it resumes (almost like suspend) If you then turn it off at the wall then it will give you the error as you describe
  11. So you tried to update the driver and not it doesnt work? go back to the same place and there is a roll back driver option, do that. if you tried windows update and there was no driver then you need to go to your MOBO manufacturer site
  12. If there is more than one port on the back of the GPU, try the other too, its not uncommon for one of the ports to go bad
  13. The RAM is a very odd configuration and I would be looking at that first:- 1 and 2GB sticks require different voltages to run, Try removing the 1024 stick and running with only the 2gig one (have you ever checked within windows that all 3gig shows)?
  14. Weird sounds could also be when you get a DirectX crash.. Can you not get into windows at all now then? It could be anything from needing the sound/display drivers updating to the chipset drivers or DirectX If you can get into windows open a command window (cmd.exe) and type dxdiag then hit enter and post a pic of the 1st screen that pops up please :)
  15. It just sounds like the monitor isnt being 'seen' Are you using onboard graphics or an add in card? if using an add in do you have onboard and have you tried both? If you can get it into windows, go to device manager and under display UNINSTALL the monitor and it should be picked back up (as a generic monitor at the least)
  16. Couple of things:- If the keyboard is a USB one, do you have any USB devices connected at the same time such as an external HDD, even having 3/4 devices can cause delays (these massiveley slow down the USB bus and can cause a delay) Have you ran MEMTEST?
  17. You can try windows update and look under the hardware tab... Failing that go to start>control panel>system> device manager> click on the sound + (there may show more than one) choose the realtek and then there is an 'update driver' box If you click that it will search the web and also any media (in the optical drive) Failing that then visit the Realtek website or your MOBO manufacturer website and d/l your latest driver
  18. Can you give us more info? You say changed to W7 (was something else on it before) or do you mean you had another PC and this is now a new one with W7 on... Normally this happens if you just turn the PC off by the switch at the wall or holding the power button down..
  19. Just make sure that the disk you get as Ken has said is the right version and also the right bit 32 or 64.. If possible too, you want to get one that has SP3 on it too, saves you having to mess around with the updates as I think from memory SP3 was near 500meg d/l
  20. If the laptops are identical, then it shouldnt be an issue, problems arise when swapping an HDD from one system to another due to different chipsets and drivers used. If they are identical then I would try and get the fault code from the BSOD
  21. One of two things could cause the need for SATA drivers not to be loaded. As mentioned the drivers are incorporated into the CD/DVD OS The MOBO has the interface set to compatibility mode (this limits the speed of the HDD) Knowing now that its a DELL disk I would say the 1st option :) Be careful when buying larger size HDDs especially on a system that runs XP, most MOBOs (of the XP era) need a BIOS flash in order to recognise HDDs of 1TB+
  22. It depends what your idea of basic gaming is. As the others have said you can pick up budget systems for around the £200-£300 mark
  23. How do you know the HDD is fine, you say this is a laptop, has someone physically taken the HDD out of the case? Have you checked it has been reinstalled correctly? Have you tried hooking the laptop to another monitor such as a TV?
  24. The noise you are saying sounds like interference from another device, normally a mobile or similar device... The ports depending on the card there are normally:- BLUE BLACK RED GREEN ORANGE PINK and depending on the setup, blue is normally REAR speakers and green FRONT, with Orange SUB On your front ports there is normally Green and Pink - Green is front and pink is mic :)
