Hello and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Jamie. :) The symptom you state is almost a sure shot sign that your hard drive is failing. Hello Seth. From reference of this log, I understand that Zism has 766 MB RAM. Correct me there if I am wrong. Besides, I understand that Vista runs smoothly on a system with 1 GB RAM and therefore it is not worth upgrading a system simply to gain the Vista experience. Also, in accordance with Zism's this post, I understand that he is really desperate to get his system working and is ready to downgrade to XP if he has to. As we have ruled out Malware problems, I think it is the Operating System. Of course, it might be hardware incompatibilities too so if thats the case, Dalo or you might want to guide him accordingly. Please let us know if you have an alternate opinion on the problem. :) -- Goku

If you have any important files to backup, then please back them up on external media like flash drives or CD / DVDs. As for your softwares, make a list so that you can download them later at your convenience. After you have done the above, just downgrade to Windows XP and you will hopefully have less or no problems. Report back when you are done. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Won't Allow Administrative Privileges Vista

Hello Jan. I repeat Wolfey's question: "Are you trying to install updates on Vista?" -- Goku -

If you click on Start then Vaio Central a window should open up. Click on the Support tab, then Recovery. A dumb question but have you tried to restore your computer that way? If not, then please try to do so and see if it helps the situation or not. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

Won't Allow Administrative Privileges Vista
Goku replied to jwilts's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hello and Welcome to FPCH Jan. :) Have you tried the Run as Administrator option? -- Goku -
Hello Zism. With all the problems you have been having, I would recommend you to downgrade to XP. From the reference of this post, I understand that you still have your XP discs. Vista is very demanding on resources and doesn't seem to run adequately on your system. Just let us know if you want to continue to XP or not. -- Goku

Are you saying that you accidentally clicked the Network tab in System Spec and now it is giving you the error message? If it is so, then I am sorry to say but you are having a lot of fishy problems. It would be easier and much more time saving to perform a complete reinstall. To do so, you might find the following article useful. How to Downgrade Windows Vista to XP I don't normally recommend this solution but the problems you are facing are very severe. It would be more sensible to perform a complete reinstall. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Let us know if you want to choose that path. :) -- Goku

Exactly what Wolfey says Morg. Windows NT doesn't have the ability to create User Accounts and has a slightly difficult learning edge too. So, it will be difficult to monitor on your girlfriend's brother's habits if he is savvy enough. To resolve this, I would recommend you to upgrade to Windows XP and creating a limited User Account for your brother. For additional security, limit his access to the internet too as there are some sites which provide instructions on circumventing a password. -- Goku

Please disable the Firewall. We need your system specifications to provide you with the appropriate instructions. -- Goku

Hello Mara. I am no expert at these problems but as far as I can see, it appears 3 of the Trojans were in the System Restore directory. When AVG quarantined these Trojans, it possibly corrupted all the previous Restore Points. If thats the case, then I am afraid, that the restore points are now permanently damaged and therefore cannot be used. This is just my opinion on the problem so don't get disheartened yet. Someone more experienced may come along and may help you out so please hang in there. And ask all the questions you want; we are only too happy to help. :) -- Goku

OK, from what I have gathered, you have not been asked to list your system specifications. Lets try to start with this and see if it can shed any light on your problem. Please download the following utility and perform the below instructions. System Spec 1. Download the executable version of the program and save it to your desktop. 2. Open the utility and you will see a list of your system specifications. 3. Click on the Edit toolbar and select Copy to Clipboard Ctrl + C. 4. Press Ctrl + V to post the specifications in your next reply. Please post the required information as soon as possible. :) -- Goku

Hello Mara. We will start by assuming that your D:/ is your primary CD drive. Assuming it as your CD-Drive, please perform the instructions provided in the article. Next, try burning a CD. See if the problem is fixed or not. If not, then please move on to the next drive letter that is E:/. Also, I should have asked you earlier but are you experiencing any problems with the burner or the option is not available to you? -- Goku
