Great news. I will be looking up to them. I am already waiting for Google to launch its browser! -- Goku -
I think you should install it Doug. You might find it handy when compressing and decompressing files. Same here. :) -- Goku

Excellent points Mart but I will echo Randy's words. 1. Editing the registry might be a solution to a problem but frankly I, and most other experts, would prefer to edit the registry manually than let a registry cleaner do the job. 2. Editing the registry manually is more safe than getting the job done by a registry cleaner or "optimizer". As always, it is important to back up the registry before tweaking with it. 3. People should be encouraged to venture into the registry but not tweak with it needlessly. And as far as I know, simply venturing into the registry to study the registry structure is not much of an enjoyable task so people cannot help tweaking the values. This is the main reason why most forums discourage users to modify the registry unless backed up by expert instructions. 4. The registry might be cluttered with thousands of invalid references and remnants but even after removing them, you will not notice a 1% boost in your computing experience. In fact, I have seen some cases where removing these "remnants" has caused performance degradation or worse, reinstallation conflicts. That said, if a user is instructed to modify / edit the registry, the instructions to backing up the registry should always be provided as a footnote, or the experience of the helper is in question, in my opinion. Personally, I have used tools to clean my registry for months when I was a computer novice. In fact, I used to run three registry cleaners everyday before shutting down my computer. Little could I blame them for my own doom! Now, I use RegSeeker as it makes editing the registry much more easier and safer. A good point of debate though. :) -- Goku

Is the keyboard working? If yes, then please perform the instructions below and see if they help or not. 1. Boot the computer. 2. After you see the desktop, press the Windows Logo Key + R combination. 3. This should bring you a Run window as shown below. http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/run-msconfig.PNG 4. Type in msconfig in the Open: field and press Enter. This should bring up the System Configuration Utility as shown below. http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/i/tr/cms/contentPics/t01220020613pit01_01.gif 5. By default, the windows should open with the General tab in view. Now, carefully press the up arrow key on your keyboard once. 6. This should bring up a faint dotted line around the Normal Startup - load all devices and drivers. If the line highlights some other option, then press the appropriate keys to highlight the specified option. 7. After you have highlighted the appropriate option, press the Tab key on your keyboard 5 times and it will highlight the Apply option. Press the spacebar key to "click" on the option. 8. Press the Enter key and affirm the following prompt. The instructions might be a long winded so please try them patiently. See if you can boot into normal mode or not. Let us know how it goes though. Good Luck. :) -- Goku

CD Drive crashes PC after copying files.
Goku replied to testmg80's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
As far as I know, a disc cannot be formatted; erased yes but not formatted. Do you mean that it always asks you to format the disc before burning anything on it? In that case is the CD a CD-RW one? As for your second question, yes you must uninstall the other CD burning program so that they might not cause any conflicts during the process. Hope that helps. :) -- Goku -

Then, I think it is the CD drive. A good way to test it would be to use another CD burning program like Nero or CDBurnerXP, as Seth has already suggested. If you still receive the error, then it is most likely a faulty CD drive. Please install Nero using the discs you have and try burning the files with it. Do you still get the error? -- Goku -

Thanks for the information Steve. Please read the following article and try the solutions suggested. See if they help or not. Stop error message in Windows XP with Service Pack 2: "STOP 0x0000001a: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" or "STOP 0x0000000a: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" Let us know how it goes. Good Luck. -- Goku -
Hello and Welcome to FPCH Clucky. :) There are plenty of programs like Windows Washer and one of them, as has already been suggested, is CCleaner. It has the option to securely delete files and overwrite the with random characters to make them irretrievable. However, if you are searching for an alternative to create a bootable disk to wipe all of your data, then I would suggest Eraser. It may take a while to format your hard drive and overwrite them with random characters but it is worth the effort if you value your privacy. Hope that helps. -- Goku

CD Drive crashes PC after copying files.

Hello Steve. Can you please provide us with the exact error code you receive on the blue screen? It might help shed some light on the cause of the problem. -- Goku -
Hello and Welcome to FPCH Mucas. :) Have you tried booting the PC with the Windows XP Disc still in the CD tray? It is known to fix the problem for many people. Also, I don't know much about hardware, but have you install the SATA drivers for your hard drive? I think the setup asks you to press F6 to install them at one point but I might be confusing them with RAID drivers. Also, this might sound a bit far fetched, but have you tried formatting the whole drive again? The error might be a resultant of a bad sector on the hard drive. Anyways, answer the above questions and we will try our best to help you out. -- Goku

I would stay with the in-built defragmenting utility as there is no point installing a third-party defragmenter for a one time purpose. This is not necessary but if you want to defragment only specific files on your hard drive, then you might find Defraggler handy. In your condition, I think that the Windows in-built defragmenting utility would perform a satisfactory task enough. Hope that helps. -- Goku

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Wardy. :) Sorry but I am no good at Linux as I have never used one. Please bear with us till someone more skilled at the Operating System comes online and reviews your case. Thank you for your peace and co-operation. -- Goku

Are you willing to use a third-party defragmenter? As far as I know, there is no option to force the utility to defragment the drive if the space is low. -- Goku

How to Tell if email is from U.K. or Ireland?
Goku replied to books's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hello and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Book. :) Firstly, I would like to advise you against putting up your or anybody's email address in public. Botnets that crawl through the internet might pick them up which may result in heavy spamming of your account. I have removed them from your original post to prevent / minimize the damage as far as possible. Back to your question. I think that the email is coming from the United Kingdom. Firstly, both the addresses that is to say the sender's and the receiver's email address are contain the suffix *.co.uk which makes me believe that the accounts are registered on the United Kingdom's domain of the email service provider. Also, a brief search for the originating IP address here confirmed my suspicions that the email is indeed sent from the United Kingdom. Hope that helps. -- Goku -
