Hi everyone!* It's been awhile since I posted a new thread here, but I promise you I've been lurking in the background every day. The reason for my de-cloaking... Way back in 2006 a C9 user*by the handle of Shushovande made some pretty cool wallpapers based on Visual Studio 2005.* Now, we'd really like to have some wallpapers for Visual Studio 2008, but as anyone who saw my Pack Installer tool should be able to attest, a chimpanzee drawing with mushed banana can make better designs than I can.* :)* So we thought it would be a good idea, rather than embarrass myself, to see if there's anyone who*is enjoying VS 2008 and would like to make some wallpapers?* If there is, I can get us a repository for people to contribute to (probably on Code Gallery, although if anyone has any other suggestions I'm happy to hear them). Certainly all credit will be given to the original designers no matter where we end up hosting the wallpapers. Hope everyone is happy and healthy out in C9 land! -Jeremy More... I pass in an object to a method. This method modifies some properties of the object. After the method returns the changes it made to the object seem to have disappeared as if the object passed in was passed by value rather than reference. Is there any instance where C# would do such a thing? This is how I would like write my code: ResetStopTimes(stops, loadTimes); private static void ResetStopTimes(Stop[] stops, Dictionary) { ... } I need to write my code like this in order to get the changes out of the function: stops = ResetStopTimes(stops, ref loadTimes); private static Stop[] ResetStopTimes(Stop[] stops, ref Dictionary) { ... } It's wierd as most places I don't need this hack. It behaves like I would expect it. Anyone know what's going on here? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I am experiencing major performance issues wthin my web application. And I am concerned about my coding practices. Counter: Processortime spikes up to 60% wihin one request. In production it reaches up to 80 or 90%. Concern 1: I am using very long ENUMs*(one has over 300 entries) Concern 2: I am storing rather big structs within hashtables (again several hundred entries in one hashtable) * Concern 3: I am using StringBuilder A LOT! Concern 4: I am collecting the output of the entire page and transforming it with one big xsl document Please let me know what you think! More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Is it possible to build a multi language application with VC# Express? I mean, does it have the ability to take out all strings via the GUI into some sort of whatever and then I can edit them all etc. ? Or should I do this manually using a list/hash table etc.? Thanks. Yay! What did you change? Cos I certainly didn't change anything at my end. I thought it was the javascript detection on the page rather than the silverlight plugin not working in my browser because when I went to a site that didn't bother with detection code I got silverlight in full force. But silverlight never worked on Channel 9 for me in FF until today (to be fair I don't visit that often so it might have been any time in the last week) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

If one looks around on the internet there are several articles mentioning an interview with Bill Gates in which he supposedly mentions Windows 7 out this year.* (Note:* Was he saying within a year from his mentioning it, or was he saying this year in '08?). How can this be?* Are there any plans for a Beta or CTP?* I mean, it is not the "new year" anymore.* We're nearing the half way point.* I don't it just doesn't seem like there is nearly as much "Hey look what's coming and try it out" with Windows 7.* And that scares me.* They had a lot of prerelease stuff out for Vista and a lot of people still heap the dung pretty high on it.* How's "Seven" going to do? So anyway, I'm not trying to start another flame war.* Some of our customers are talking now about waiting until Windows 7 and skipping Vista and we're getting asked whether or not there is any preview available since it will be "released this year, right?* RIGHT?" - a great product? - a great leader +product? - an OK product - thats used everywhere? - a*neat logo - a "hip" logo - a meme - a utility - a statement - none of the above edit: For my response - Id say brand has taken a big hit these days. ie; Why buy CheeseWhiz (6.99) when you can buy "Supermarket Brand" Cheese Spread for $4.99 In the old days (eh-heh) brands were valuable- because if they came to your area - they must have already been popular (tested / tried / true) These days - with so many products, and so many people ... is there even such thing as brand anymore? *CheeseWhiz: YOU know ya waaan' it" More... Mike Swanson is at it again. You've seen Mike on Channel 9 before and you've probably used his SWF to XAML converter that he wrote a while back. His latest side project promises to be quite useful for conference owners who have the complex task of planning sessions for big technical events like PDC or TechED. In fact, Mike is the PDC08 content owner and this task falls squarely on his shoulders. Instead of littering his office with Post-It notes that represent sessions, speakers, session times and locations, he decided to write an algorithm to solve his problem, specifically a genetic algorithm. This is the first epsiode of a new series on Channel 9, Data Structures and Algorithms, that will focus on, well, data structures and algorithms :) Each episode will feature an engineer at a whiteboard discussing solutions to algorithms that they invented or improved upon. There are many clever people who write code for Microsoft and Channel 9 will continue to highlight them and their work. This new series is an attempt to really focus the conversation to one problem and it's algorithmic solution (which will often involve the advent of new data structures). Enjoy. Mike is as much an engineer as he is a technical evangelist. His genetic session scheduler is an innovative approach to solving a problem rife with tediousness. Well done, Mike! Hi all, I'm working on a console C++ project in vs 2005.* I have included an MSI installer project and what I want to know is if I can have the installer create a classpath variable on the installing system of where they installed my program.* This way my users don't have to go in and manually modify the value themselves.* I've not found much information on how to do this via google so I'm asking the experts. Thanks, Justin http://www.jrl-software.com More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
