I'm currently working on a project with a database and have to keep in account that concurrency problems might occur. So I'm using*a timestamp column in most/all of the tables. My question is: what's the best sql stored procedure when updating data? Obviously I should compare the timestamp and see if it matches the last time it was read. But other than that, do I have to use transactions, raise exception, just return a -1 value if the timestamps don't match? What's the best stored procedure? More... The quick recap.* About two years ago I got an 80 (or is it 60)*GB Video iPod.* It has worked for about half that time.* I've sent it in twice.* I am fairly soured on it.* I want to replace it. Does anyone want to offer an updated opinion of Zune versus iPod? Some thoughts: I don't suspect I'll really watch much video, I thought I would, but so far I have not. I don't have much music, 80 or 60 gb is WAY overkill. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Hi all, When I finished work last night, I had three instances of Visual Studio open - everything saved, but just didn't close down. This morning I come in to find that there were Vista updates overnight and my machine has rebooted (slightly annoying, but my bad for leaving apps open and nothing lost because everything was saved). However, there's something wrong. In my Pending Changes window for TFS, I can no longer filter files by solution - the button is totally greyed out.... This applies to VS.net 2005 and 2008 and it was all working before I left. I've tried all the usual stuff - rebooting, closing and reopening projects/solutions, but nothing is bringing it back, the button consistently remains disabled. My next step is to try reinstalling the TFS explorer tools which I'm going to try now. Has anyone else noticed something similar recently? I'm wondering if the windows update stuff is just a coincidence or not. My specs are Vista x32 ultimate, vs.net 2005 and 2008 with each editions TFS explorer, all service packed. TFS Server is 2005. Can't keep a good man down ... Shrugging off comments that he's 'sold out' to Microsoft, Negroponte has unveiled version 2 of his OLPC project. http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/05/xo-2.jpg It has dual screens (the lower one being multi-touch) and will go for the totally unbelievable price of $75.I imagine that will be '$75' in the same way that the original OLPC sold for 'below $100'. More details at Engadget. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Hi, I have a control that is inherited from dropdown list. I have added a couple of properties to it (arg1 and arg2). I have this placed on a datagrid. When I manually write something into these properties manually it works fine e.g When I use this it does not I changed arg1 and arg2 to store the information in viewstate when the properties are set and it works but is there a better way of doing this? Thanks, Alex More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

PC gaming is dying, get the facts: 1) Internet has enabled pricing and releasing to be global, instant*(pirate releasing especially) 2) Publishers are still trying to price items differently by each region/country 3) Publisher/BioWare decided that Mass Effect for PC*would be released a week*later in*Europe than US. Do they think a) no one in Europe understands or wants english*version b) it takes a week to move the bits from US to EU? c) both? 4) Publishers don't "get" the Internet. For a single player game you want to keep some of the content and code on a server until sales have died down, otherwise every bit of the content is on the torrent after the release in the first region. = in 1 month publishers are again telling us that PC gaming is dying*and not acknowledging that publisher policies and lack of understanding modern technology and the fact that PC gamers do not want to take a hour to install games from DVD's but want to stream them from the net (as WoW does, even though WoW is just a glorified single player game with chat client) played a big part. Also Say No to companies using installers for software that don't require installing. It's pretty annoying that you have*most of the *software running perfectly without admin rights - except for the installer. Windows does check that dependencies are there when you run the program, if something is missing, then go get it, you don't need installer for this. Pirated games can be often xcopy deployed from system to system, why would you want to pay for something that's more restricted? It's not like the installers were preventing the pirates! Hello publishers get a clue. PS.*Not buying MassEffect unless BioWare changes the EU release date to match US release date and changes the "copy protection" from activation to streaming without installers. Too bad, it might have been good. PS2. Using Windows is pretty much "streaming" already*having to download the hundred updates and SDKs to get anything done. More... *I had a couple of my C9 buddies e-mail me wondering if I was still alive.* I am.* I still watch Channel 9 and come in here.* Since I have become, as Corona would put it, a "competitor" I havent snubbed Microsoft and havent changed my opinion about the guys that work there or the work they have done.* I have just been busy, PC/OS and work are keeping me busy, for those that care OSLiving put up a review. The one thing that kind of surprises me but it doesnt upset me is the references to BeOS.* I feel like Im having to live up to a standard here. Overall, everything is going fair.* I have gone 4 weeks without a cigarette and as of my last physical I have lost 99 lbs.* I did cheat one day and went to Taco Bell but hey. For those of you that took the time to notice and write me I say thanks for caring. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
