The internet is awash with information, and most people here voraciously ingest a daily diet of Channel 9, Scoble or whatever. Kevin Moore pointed me to a brilliant but rather old article entitled Why I Hate Frameworks. Seeing at I'm currently grappling with justification for using patterns and practices, this article had a particular resonance. Couple this with Rico Mariani's Cycles in Computer Science, or Am I Ancient? you really do start to see (for me at least) that software changes do not happen overnight. Have you an article, blog, thread that has rotated your thinking on a particular subject or technology that people may be unaware of? If you do please link it to this thread. The only rule I guess, is that it has to be at least a year old. This can include anything from design, security, beautiful code or whatever, just as long as it's impact on your thinking or understanding of a particular subject was rotational. Obviously it would be most welcome if you could decorate the link, or whatever with some personal comments as to why it is important (although this is not always a requirement). More... I'm not a*programmer (although I have had a bit of formal education in C++ and have done some programming on the job) and I'm trying to decide what to start with. My impression is that VB is easier to start with and that C# is more structured. I have no practical reasons (as in job opportunities) to pick a language, I'm free in that regard. So, as someone with past experience and very rusty skills, with a love for methodical and structured approach, would you say jump into C#, or think that's too much of a leap? More... Hi everyone, I'm trying to use the TFS 2008 API to discover test results from builds. I have an IBuildDetail instance which gives me some information, and I've scanned through the IBuildInformation nodes on it, but no information about tests. MSDN mentions an ITestSummary interface which sounds like exactly what I want: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.teamfoundation.build.client.itestsummary.aspx MSDN says to get an ITestSummary I need to use the InformationNodeConverters class: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.teamfoundation.build.client.informationnodeconverters.aspx If anyone could show me how, I'd be eternally grateful! Not sure if this is approapriate, but I think you guys would know this stuff in IT community. I am looking for backup options. Mostly I am looking for on-demand backup and failover solution. I have looked some solutions like Double Take and EVault. Double Take is almost the kind I want, but it is way too expensive. Anyone knows any other on-demand backup I can use? How quickly I can't recover from it and etc. Thank you for helping out. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

We're storing app settings for a ASP.net web service in another .config file (not web.config) and linking to it via the syntax: So that the same MSI can be easily configure to multiple environments at intall time. Now, everything's working fine, except that editing the Environment.config file doesn't seem to trigger an app restart. Does anyone know how this can be setup so that editing Environment.config also trigger an app restart on the next request? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I'm putting together a domain for a French audience that will be hosted on a .FR domain.* It's not going to have super high volume traffic and there is no data-intensive media on the site. Will going with a hosting company who has their servers in the US cause much discomfort to a French audience? I suspect the answer is some form of "it depends," but I'd appreciate some pointers on areas that I may not have already considered. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
