Just a quick thought. Sure there would be text - in general -* ... but for the main UI - top and maybe second level ... just icons? With WPF could they not make icons that show what they do when you mouse over (for example)? Like if there was a goal to do the desktop, start panel, and top level explorer icons - to show what they do rather than make you read (breadcrumb text ... start menu - all text looks the same... etc) I think* it would be a fun design goal ... improbable ..perhaps .. but if it succeeded .. i think the UI would be more intuitive ? (only as an option of course) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Dear All, I'm trying to create a desktop shortcut to a network connection, i.e. one which when double-clicked will display the status of that connection.* Creating it manually is no problem, but I need to create it using a batch file or a vbs script. The "helpful" target shown on the manually-created shortcut is {BA126ADB-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}, but I'm at a loss as to how this can be "attached" to a programatically-created shortcut. This is probably very simple for most of you, but it's got me completely stumped!* Any help in this matter would be most appreciated. Best regards, Greg M More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Hey niners, I need some help because I am STUMPED! [C]* I have made a vbs script that gets the dell service tag enters it in a text file and names the file the store number.* The script works perfectly when running it local.* You can double click the script, use cscript, wscript, start, or any other way to run a file you can think of.* You cannot execute it remotely.* This script is going to be run from around 350 restruants around the country.* The file is going to be made and picked up automatically and brought back to a server over here.* Everything is set up and works fine except the remote execution of this script.* It seems like a security issue.* I have used script2exe to convert it and try to run it that way.* I have used cmd wrappers to try to run the script to no avail.* I even made a VB app that ran the script.* I have run out of ideas.* Any suggestions? I've got a drama final exam to run a show for in about 20 minutes, and I need some help. We've got this setup: 4x Variable Spotlights, 2 on each T Bar lighting rig (for flexibility). We've also got a pretty much unlimited number of other lights for creating any type of scenario, but we're stumped on this one. We need to remove some shadows from the performance - without sacrificing too much of the lighting effects. We thought about simply making all the shadows cast backwards, but it looks awful and so we're looking for other options. So, another thing that crossed my mind was to have an ambient light, so the shadows would remain but they'd be fainter - however this sacrifices our lighting effects and so is a last resort. Does anybody here have any idea (even if it's just a guess, you never know!) how I can remove them? Google is fruitless, I just keep getting Photo-Editing tutorials (even when I add "live performance".. *sigh*) Thanks all :) (oh, and if you find it out, if you've got a twitter could you send me a direct message @lloyd_humph :)) More... How much memory can*the GPU*use on the Xbox 360? I have seen that the GPU has access to the build-in system memory (which is 512 MB), but can it use the whole amount of memory that's found there or only a subset of it? I'm wondering that because usually textures use a lot of memory (OK you can compress them but still) and in a game like GTA 4 there are a lot of visible textures.*Now if the GPU can only use like 32 or 64*MB of the whole memory I can estimate who the textures in GTA 4 must look like when you move very near to them. Jensens Harris has a great Mix O8 video on The Story of the Ribbon. In this he elucidates as to why the ribbon was procured, and the problems it solved. Who designed the Visual studio Interface because they surely are the unsung hero of UI design? One can fit a lot of components/ features in a small amount of space. This was pre-office 2007 and was ingenious in the way it was procured. I stumbled across this docking manager on Sourceforge, and have been blown away. Yes commercial versions are available, but this has been written by 1 bloke. I can't help but feel that Winforms will be looked at like C++ is to managed C#/VB, i.e. elite,* because if you look at the source code, there is a lot of stuff going on in there. Yes WPF can make the screens look good, but whether we will ever get the performace remains to be seen. WPF is technically less challenging, but challenging in a different way. I see myself as being able to develop on both platforms, and really wish people would admit that winforms is actually much harder that WPF, at a fundamental level, and stop just seeing it as archaic. First: Is there work being done on the automation of computer systems where computer systems write and build them selves? Right now we humans ‘appear’ to hold the keys to the evolutionary track for computers. We seem to want to try and make them like our selves. But what if they were able to evolve for them selves? Are there people who actually work on this? Second: Is it possible for a human mind and body to be used as an automated theorem prover? I can think of several situations where you would want to proof a decision in life where you would like to know if your decision or the line of code in life is going to work before running it. Take for example a war time scenario where you plug in all the numbers and strategy. Another situation is global warming, what is really happening to the world in relation to industrialization. You would wish to know the out come before running it (taking course of action) wouldn’t you. We have computer simulations that do this kind of stuff but what do we use when the simulation or the computer is not equipped to run an accurate simulation? Simulations into social variables that so far cant be predicted by a computer. Has there been any work done that incorporate the human mind to evaluate and surmise a situation that is to ‘complex’ for a computer model? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

It starts with the Welcome screen, something steals the focus away from the password prompt, forcing me to click in the edit box with the mouse as the tab key has no effect. Minor but extremely annoying. Next, my network card acts funny after the computer slept. I get many timeout errors when browsing and checking mail. I can see the LED go off for a few seconds on my switch if the cable was unplugged or the*NIC was reset. I have to disable/enable it to restore normal operations (until the next sleep). Last, something broke in either USB or P&P or both. The system tells me that my PCTV330e tuner "could perform faster" like the USB port was a USB1 device (it is not),*MediaCenter sometimes (only sometimes)*does not see the TV tuner, I've also heard the distinctive "device uplugged" sound without unplugging anything. The system worked just fine with Vista Ultimate since late 2006. The above problems appeared immediately after installing SP1 and completely disappeared when*I uninstalled the service pack minutes ago. Anyone*had a*similar experience? More... I have a SQL Server DateTime* column in a table that I want to use AS a UTC DateTime value in .Net. For example: Table = Events Column = StartTime (datetime) = 4/31/2008 13:00:00 .... and I want it to eventually become a UTC time of that exact value... of 4/31/2008 13:00:00... But ADO.net wants to use the the SQL server (or Web server) timezone when I do DateTime.ToUniversalTime()... I want the immune the app to the SQL Server / web server's timezone. I'm sure there's a way... but how? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
