  1. Hi all, I am having real difficulties with Vista Ultimate. Its such a POS. I am using*Vista SP1 running on an Acer Travel mate 8200 something or other. Damn I am so sick of this crappy os I am so close to going back to XP. Whenever you think its working fine you get yet another*problem. This is a fairly recent install I have the following installed on it: VS2008, VS2005, SQL developer edition, Adobe Fireworks, MS office 2007, Firefox and FTP voyager. I have ran anti virus scans etc Happens about 70% of the time after initial bootup immediatly I have turned indexing off I used sys internals process monitor to narrow this down to a service called WLAN autoconfig if I stop this it runs at about 50-60% cpu usage (which still seems high but at least is usuable) I looked this up and there is a setting you can click to turn off searching for better networks which can cause issues but this didnt seem to work for me. Any ideas or*shall I just junk this rubbish OS? Alex More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  3. This is the second time I've gotten this in ~ a month. What the hell causes this? http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii240/trix_1520/WHY.png Event viewer says. 5. Hey folks, I'm working on a very dynamic system that I'm not sure how to implement in the best manner possible.* Basically, the idea is this: Users have their own domain that is parked as an addon domain to mine, thus I am able to access their domain, and, more importantly, they are able to access certain centralized files in mine.* All of these domains aren't really accessible to the user themselves, that is the files aren't; I set the domain up for them, and I put all of the files needed for their site up for them.* Whenever I release an update, however, I can't deploy to all of the user's simultaneously, so I take a different approach.* Everything up to this point works fine and there are no problems. Here's where things start to get tricky.* On my centralized area that all of these domains have access to, I put a zip file with updated files, and I extract the files via PHP and overwrite their site's files with the files in the zip file as appropriate.* There are no problems with this method and it seems to work fine.* The problem is that each of these domains ALSO has a MySQL database instance and the tables on all of them are ALSO the same across the board.* When I need to make updates to their database, obviously I need that to be done automatically also, or I'll spend the rest of my natural life updating databases. The question I am trying laboriously to get to is as follows: The update files they get and I extract behind the scenes are always the most up-to-date.* However, the database changes are incremental and I can't always tell what state their database is in for the update script.* Thus the database updates can be done in one of two ways: 1) For every new "version" I release, I save record of that in the database, and there is a corresponding update file for the database for each version.* If someone's updating their site and it's 3 or 4 versions old, it loops through all of the updates since their version until they're up to date. 2) There is one update file that gets updated each release.* Somehow or another, we put appropriate "IF NOT EXISTS"-type checks into the update scripts so any new tables are created, and alterations to the tables needed are performed, and in the end their database is always completely up to date with the latest changes. Can method 2 work?* When you do an ALTER TABLE and specify all of the columns and the modifications you want, does it simply skip that "alteration" if it already exists?* Is there a way to check if an alteration exists without having to parse DESCRIBE TABLE output and determine if it's of the right data type and such? Sorry for the long-windedness, and thanks for reading if you got this far ;) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  6. In my new .NET CF (3.5 WinMo 6 Pro) application, I am referincing a DLL. When I deploy it to my physical device, the program won't start. I get a .NET CF Initialization Error. "The application failed to load required components. If the .NET Compact Framework is installed on a storage card, please ensure that this card is in place and launch the application. If this fails, a re-installation of the .NET Compact Framework is recommended". It only happens when I try to intialize an object whose class is that DLL. If I remove the object initialization and remove the reference it works fine. I've tried adding the DLL to the solution and placing the DLL in the application's startup dir on my device. I did some web-searching on the issue and it appears that it was a bug in the .NET CF 2.0. The man said that it should be fixed in .NET CF SP2. I am running 3.5 http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif Dan Elliott - MSFT wrote: We've confirmed that this is a bug in CF.* Whenan app is launched, we use the app path in the class name. Our singleinstance detection logic is broken if an app is launched with differentslashes in the path. This repros on the Blackjack, as its task managerlaunches apps using forward slashes and the OS preserves them. So if auser launches an app normally from the start menu (back slashes) andthen tries to get to it using the task manager, they will get a newinstance instead of the old one. Unfortunately it is too late to get the fix into Beta 2, but*we plan to get it into RTM. * Dan -J.Lebowski More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  13. Hi, am using NTFS hard links to do Lucene index replication.* I'm not sure why, but seems like if I make a hard link to a file with CreateHardLink API (from kernel32), then if I subsequently open the original file for reading, I cannot delete the hard link with DeleteFile or with File.Delete from .NET.* It fails with "file is locked by another process" error.* But according to MSDN, DeleteFile should work since it is just decrementing count of hard links not actually deleting the file. Here is code to reproduce... Assume test.txt exists already... // create new hard link "testHL.txt" pointing to original file... CreateHardLink("testHL.txt","test.txt",IntPtr.Zero); // open text.txt for reading, but now I cannot delete hard link... using(StreamReader r=new StreamReader("test.txt")) { * *** string c=r.ReadLine(); *** * File.Delete("testHL.txt");
