Many moons ago, I wrote an article on Windows Vista audio. It's in danish though, so unless you enjoy the diagrams and pictures, you'll probably not be interested. But since it's been several months since it was supposed to be published, slowed by the delay in a site update, I thought I'd "publish" it here. It's meant as a general introduction to the architechture with some hints to end-users as well as some insight for the more technically minded. Hi All, Since installing SP1RC I've been having issues with USB Devices not being recognized/not connecting. I'm running Lenovo T60P Laptop and my Sirius Stiletto 2 will not recognized as well as my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T10 camera. The Stiletto 2 error is: Device driver software was not successfully installed MTP Device: Failed Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed. The Sony DSC-T10 camera makes the USB Connect Sound, but it doesn't connect, the memory storage doesn't show up under my computer. I'm wondering if anyone has any insights as to how to get this fixed - 2 of my key media devices have lost connectivity with my PC. Thanks! Ivan More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I just followed one of the links to the MIX University to have a look at the Silverlight Firestarter, and came across this: http://www.visitmix.com/University/silverlight/firestarter/ Take a particularly good look at the rollover on the right - I don't know what the hell it's doing, but they're obviously not doing it right. The rollover animation is sparodic and jumpy, and it wasn't even that great an idea to start off with. You'll also notice on the left panel that the overlay highlighting doesn't follow the Z-index of the pictures correctly or smoothly. A particularly bad example of Silverlight usage, and certainly not something that should be the frontpage advert for new Silverlight users. Edit: It seems to work better in IE7 (but is still jumpy and ugly) - it's truly appalling in Firefox. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Since I originally posted the Washington Post foul-up, then I think its only fair that the RIAA point of view gets an airing. http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif Engadget wrote:Speaking to NPR, RIAA president Cary Sherman flatly said "the story is just wrong." Sherman went on to say that the RIAA hasn't ever prosecuted anyone for ripping or copying for personal use, and that the only issue in the Jeffrey Howell case was -- as always -- sharing files on Kazaa. Perhaps most interestingly, Sherman directly addressed the "ripping is just a nice way of saying 'steals one copy'" comment made by Sony BMG's anti-piracy counsel in the Jammie Thomas case, saying that the attorney "misspoke," and that neither Sony BMG or the RIAA agreed with that position.however http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif Engadget wrote:Of course, it wasn't all sunshine and cupcakes -- Sherman refused to straight-up answer the question of whether or not ripping was legal, saying instead that "there are 100 hypotheticals" and that "copyright law is very complicated." Of course, what he's really saying is that courts haven't made an clear determination of fair use regarding ripping and that he's covering the industry's collective (I need to watch my language) -- which explains his hilariously out-of-touch explanation that making copies onto "analog cassettes, special audio CD-Rs, minidiscs, and digital tapes" is legal, because those are all expressly allowed by law. On the other hand, Sherman also said that RIAA's interpretation of the law "doesn't really matter," because "not a single claim has ever been brought over personal use. ... so they're still not prepared to give a definitive answer on the question ... I'm writing a Windows Service for reading data from COM port under WinXP. The service requires startup parameters. I have no problem reading the parameters from Environment.GetCommandLineArgs(). However when I type the parameters at the "Service" MMC panel, the value is lost whenever I press "OK" to close it. I've tried to set it to "manual" then "automatic" again just to make the "Apply" button enabled. But it also doesn't keep the value when "Apply" is pressed. I've tried Close the service, set the parameters, then Start it again. The parameters doesn't pass to the service when it starts... and lost when "OK" is pressed. It seems to me the "startup parameters" box is not connected to anything... is it a bug or it is to be used with some fancy special way? Meanwhile I just go to HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\\ImagePath and append the parameters there, but ask the user to change COM port setting doesn't sound good to me. I wish it could be done using a more standard way - using the MMC Service panel. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
