Well what a year it's been. sure it's not quite over yet, but by now everyone is going to be with their loved ones and eating turkey and not really caring about stuff so lets wrap the year up on 22nd Dec 2007. My question today is... What lessons does Microsoft need to learn from this year to take forward into the new year.* In some ways it's been a roller coaster year for Microsoft, but what do they need to take away from the highs and lows? my opinions.. later. No really. what's the deal? I can't think of anything more frustrating that "Sorry, we're very busy - please try later" followed by a hang-up. Worse because I was expecting an engineer at my hour 4 hours ago and I'd quite like to go outside ... grrrr. Now I am just waiting for the 5pm call that he can't make it can I re-arrange for January. Sigh. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

So you're reading some genuinely interesting website and you notice some comment spam (it's bad comment spam in that they can't even formulate their URLs properly). Anyway, I followed the link (after cutting it by hand) and lo-and-behold... the horror. Apparently it's an ISV selling really awful software, jewelry, and leather products as a side business. And the obligatory links to Testimonial-laden pyramid scheme websites. I nominate this my "Worst website of the year 2007" (lucky too, with only a week left until 2008). What's yours? More... So I've been thinking about how to (ab)use my Windows Home Server; and the thought occured; it has a trusted SSL cert, so, heck, why not turn it into a CardSpace Managed Security Token Server. Funky. And off I go searching for information on how to write WHS plugins. And the best source of information? Our very own DaHat. I didn't even realise it was him until I saw a picture with a C9 guy! Since there's more developers here than anywhere else I know I think some of you should look into developing tiles for Vista's Windows Mobility Center. Until yesterday Microsoft has 'allowed' only original equipment manufacturers to produce these WMC tiles because "so random applications don’t author and install their own tiles intothe mobiitity center, thereby both diluting it’s value/focus"But I reckon that should be a choice up to users on which if any tiles they want to install. After a lot of reverse engineering and research, Rafael Rivera Jr. has finally figured out how it is done. Yesterday he posted what we believe is the world's first non-OEM third-party tile (not that it really means much). Instructions to download and install are on my site. On top of that, Rafael has also (re)published Microsoft's 47-page documentation on how to build tiles which was only previously found in the obnoxiously difficult to access Vista OPK. So what we have now is a very basic "static" tile. The next step is to make a "dynamic" tile which is what most of the Microsoft ones are. As well, Rafael is planning to make a "third-party tiles manager" to help users manage, install and uninstall these third party tiles in the style of the Sidebar Gadgets manager. I reckon some of you should try to come up with some interesting concepts for new WMC tiles keeping in mind what it is designed for and who is most likely to use it (mobile users). :) http://www.istartedsomething.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/mobility-center-thirdparty.jpg More... I would like to rewrite our main app in C# but you know what it is... no time, no money, must support the old app, etc. But I try to use C# for the small in house tools and apps. I have used the refactor tool in VS and I was like... WOW! Renaming a class, a method, a variable, an attribut*is so easy. Do you think that it will be possible to have those kind of IDE tools for C++ ? Are they avalable whith managed C++ ? More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

Is there a way of asking Visual Studio to create an equivilence operator for structs and/or classes such that == is defined as all of it's elements being equivilent. Have an example: class ComplexNumber { * private int re,im; } and ask VS to derive the equivilence relation: public static bool operator== (ComplexNumber a, ComplexNumber b){ * return a.re == b.re && a.im == b.im; } but for much larger numbers of fields (say 20+)? Before anyone suggests it, I don't want to use reflection, and although I can type them in manually, it means that if fields are added to the class later then unless someone shrewdly adds said field into the == function, it might break the equivilence. Heres an early Christmas gift to fellow niners with Windows and Linux boxes, who are looking for an easy way to access all their Windows applications andremote files when Wine-type solutions fall flat. I've packaged together a set of software components. Itprovides a seamless terminal solution for Fedora Linux users with capable Windows machines. I've made RPMs for a patched CVS-built rdesktop, included Microsoft'sElevate Power Toy for Vista, Fontis IT's enhanced SeamlessRDP server, and a small tray application and five page Readme wrote by me. Be sure to check the Readme file. System Requirements: * A computer with a version of Windows that encompasses the servercomponent of Terminal Services--Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, WindowsXP Professional, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista Business, Ultimate,or Enterprise. Note: Windows Server 2008 terminal servers are not yet supported. * At least one computer with Fedora Linux installed. Although thissoftware is capable of working on other distributions or Unix-likeoperating systems with a simple re-compile procedure, this particularpackage is designed to work with 32-bit versions of Fedora and Windows.Re-compiling the SRPM and SeamlessRDP components are necessary for64-bit machines with 64-bit operating systems. * Any sort of network or Internet connection for both the server andclient. A simple 56K modem connection would be sufficient. That said,dial-up modem support under Linux is a joke at best; therefore, formost users the only options are wired Ethernet or wirelessconnectivity. The Terminal Server system may be accessed from a localor wide area network or via the Internet. Enjoy. http://channel9.msdn.com/Photos/367865.jpg Download the project More...
