I know, I know, it's Christmas and we're all supposed to full of season's joy etc etc - and I was. And then I saw ElfYourself. Isn't this just taking it all a bit too far? Thank goodness it takes a long time to load. Me, as a dancing elf. I think not. Sabot as a dancing fairy, maybe. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

OK, I wanted to download the new RC of Vista SP1 but I saw this: Windows Update Automatic Update will automatically update your machine over the next several days with the prerequisites updates provided you have the Windows Update Automatic Update feature enabled. When the service pack has downloaded a pop-up notification will inform you that updates are ready to be installed. You must click on this notification and choose to install the service pack at this point. The service pack will not silently or automatically install itself. So my question... is there anyway I can get the service pack without waiting days for Windows update to give me the required prereqs updates? If not... that totally blows because I want to play with the RC. [C] Link More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

Picked this from Slashdot. Now I'm still listening so hard to comment on it (content starts around 14 minutes after intro by museum ceo) but the subject will probably interest people like me for who C64 was the introduction to computers and has stayed in the hearts of many for the unique character of its sound that's become popular enough to be found in some pop music. http://dotnet.org.za/codingsanity/archive/2007/12/14/review-windows-xp.aspx That blogger reviewed Windows XP and he believes that the Microsoft Windows team outdid itself when it was working on the successor to Windows Vista. According to him, in Windows XP, Microsoft fixed all of the flaws that Windows Vista had and created the best release of Windows ever. More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

I have a bunch of files in a folder and I would like to add a prefix to their names. E.g. there are image files named like dsc0001.jpg dsc0002.jpg etc., and I want to rename them like 20081215dsc0001.jpg 20081215dsc0002.jpg I know an*easy way to do this in mc under Linux, but I would like to learn it in Windows, too. Can you help me? More... View All Our Microsft Related Feeds

I remember when I was first introduced to graphical OSs, with Macs, it was standard practice for people to have windows of open folders permanently on their desktop, with reference to common applications, or personal documents. Also you had these Apple menu apps where calculators and other mini programs were used above regular programs. But overall, the desktop was more than just a task manager, but an environment for organizing what you were doing. Currently in Windows there are many ways to achieve something similar. You can add a toolbar to the taskbar to reference to a folder, and have it open up like a cascading menu, if you keep it shortened to its title. You can keep a sidebar gadget on the desktop for permanent display, and bring it to the top to use. However, none of these things are promoted by the Windows design. The use of toolbars has been limited, no longer easily able to drag a toolbar from the taskbar to another side of the screen, and most people don't even notice you have the capability. So even though this is extremely useful, most people even those who are aware of the ability to do it, don't do it. The sidebar is neutered , doesnt have auto-hide ability, and if you want to bring a gadget to the top, you have to bring all of them to the top first. Even though you can get really cool sidebar apps, people won't make extensive use of it, and nobody will use sidebar apps in a way like the Apple menu programs like calculators or puzzle games, even though that would be a good use,*because the design doesn't support it well. I think it would be great if one thing Windows designers worked on was improving the Windows experience, in that regard, as a user environment. Plus, imagine things like minimizing Windows Media Player to the sidebar in its compact form, and restoring it from the sidebar to its normal windowed form. Ditto with*Live Messenger or Live Mail, where the compact gadget state is an alternative form to minimization. Or--OneNote. Add to that, the ability to easily minimize folders to the sidebar, and you're on your way to having an interface that promotes all these cool and useful features. -- Then, make the taskbar congruent in some way to the sidebar, so things can move between them (like notifications and system tray apps were originally supposed to ---and like different minimized forms of Media Player --taskbar, and sidebar; and do that with minimized folder menus) I don't think you'll be able to greatly improve the Windows interface without thinking along these lines, and making the OS a more integrated environment. Hi, I used to*use Urge subscription, but since they were converted to Rhapsody I absolutely hate it.* Any suggestions for other good subscription services that would work with a 30GB Zen Vision:M? BTW, I don't want this to turn into a flame fest.* We all have our preferences.* I used both pay-as-you-go and all-you-can-eat subscription services, and I would never use a non-subscription service again.* If I did I would need to pay thousands of dollars for the amounts of songs I listen to.* So no-one is going to convince me that subscription services are not a good idea.* Plus, I can still "own" a song if I wanted to by paying the $0.99 if I really really wanted to.* Phew, now*that that is out of the way, any suggestions?
