1. Okay, - Can you open the start menu and type in "task scheduler" and press enter - The browse to the folders on the left as shown in my screenshot below, by expanding the following: * Task Scheduler Library *Microsoft *Windows - Then click on each of the following folders, and see what details appear in the window. I am guessing the only ones with a scheduled time of 12AM or "00:00AM" Will be System Restore and/or Windows Defrag or Defender. Can you confirm these are the only ones or are there others too? In the above screenshot I am selected on System Restore to give an example of what details you need to be looking for, i.e. the time.
2. The midnight sympton could be due to Automatic updates or another scheduled program update/scan. To check if it is Automatic updates do the following: - Open control panel - Click on Security - Then click on "Turn automatic updating on or off" The next screen should show the following: Check the time that is set. As for your second question, does it still wakeup even if you turn the printer off? as I don't know but expect your print has a power cable too, that plugs into a socket, try making sure it's turned off at the mains and see if it still wakes it up. If thats not possible or it turns on still then we'll have to look for another way around it for you
3. The link you have given to wikipedia describes DDR2 RAM, but your link to Amazon is for a DDR module. Please check which one you may need as DDR is different to DDR2. The clock speed for PC3200 is 200MHz Please make sure you know if you need DDR2 or DDR as they are different sticks and will not fit in the other's slot.
4. Like a dedicated time slot to allow printing? Example. User 1 may print between the times of 8am-10am User 2 can print from 10am till 12pm User 3 between 12pm and 3pm ... along those lines?
5. the target temperature is the temperature that you set your CPU to be at, so the lower the better. If a CPU is hot, it not only carries the possibiity of melting it or overheating it resorting to a crash or auto reboot, but it also slows down your CPU when it is running hot. If you lower the target temp it will mean the fans come on soon but it will keep your CPU cooler and therefore more efficent. I suspect that the reason your CPU is getting so hot so quickly could be a problem with either your heatsink or the thermal paste. I would suggest buying the suggested CPU Fan above as they come preapplied with heatsink paste, then fitting it to your CPU instead of the current one and booting from cold again and checking temperatures. To recap, the higher the target temp, the hotter your CPU will get, leading to more problems as it seems that your fans cannot keep your CPU very cool as it is now. the whole point of the fans is to keep your CPU and system as cool as possible. If you would like advice on fitting or removing a CPU fan, just ask.
6. Lowering the target temperature will make the fans kick in earlier, as if it says he CPU temp was 59, then that is the temp of the CPU at the time of the reading. The lower the CPU or the target temp, the earlier the fans kick in to keep the CPU at that new lower temp. But as Dalo said, 59 cannot be a boot up temp, it's impossible for a CPU to get upto 59 degrees straight form boot if you went right into the BIOS first time.
7. To boot into safe mode, keep tapping the F8 key as the PC boots up, this will bring up a black screen with a number of options. Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the option of Safe Mode then press the Enter key to select it. Please try this and tell us if you are able to get into your PC this way.

10. What does the type of connection have to do with why you took the HDD cage out of one pc and installed it (god knows how) into another PC? When you buy a case, it will have some sort of HDD Cage. You should not need to install more, or take out these for any reason. they are generally built into the case themselves, but if they do come out, they should not be used inside other cases as they will not fit properly. what I don't understand is why you said you took your HDD cage out of your old PC to fit it into your current one.
11. well you cannot install a HDD without a HDD cage, which by reading your above post, you have put into a different PC. either purchase a new one, which will be hard, or remove the old one form your current PC. why did you do this anyway? your current PC should also have come with enough space to fit a HDD or two.
12. Do you mean you have NO HDD slots at all, or that they are already full with other HDDs? I would NOT recommend placing your HDD anywhere other than a proper HDD cage, as it needs no pressure places upon it, it also needs good ventilation and good access to connect it to the mobo, so my answer would be, no it isn't. As BeeCeeBee has already stated, it would last less than a day most probably. That also incudes the floppy drive you said about trying to bend open to make it fit. Buy a caddy as suggested above or upgrade your case would be the other option. EDIT: You state it is your primary drive? yet you MUST have other HDD slots taken up. If you wish to keep this as a primary drive, take out one of the other HDDs and use the space for this drive and transfer any files you need from the drive that you dont have room for, to this one.
13. Okay, glad it is back to normal :) And thanks, I will revise the above instructions to make sure that they make sense when followed :)
14. Hey, sorry about the delay in replies. I do not deal with laptops very often so it is not in my expertise, so the ideal people to view your images and decide are either Dalo or Tootech and they will reply as soon as they are possible to take a look :) My own thoughts would be that looking at your images, there seems to be no thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink and as Tootech stated, it will need to be applied on the section that touches the CPU. If you can work out where this area is then you know where the heatsink/thermal paste needs to go. If you want help or tips about thermal paste or applying it, don't be afraid to ask.
15. Hello daktari, What happens when you try to open a .exe file? does it ask you what program to open it with? If BeeCeeBee's steps do not work, try the following: Solution 1: Go to Control Panel and then Folder Options. Select the File Type tab and then click New http://static.commentcamarche.net/en.kioskea.net/faq/images/0-bQUm3spQ-untitled1-s-.png (Does your list look similar to the above? or are all file types listed as "(None)"? Type in EXE file extension and click OK http://static.commentcamarche.net/en.kioskea.net/faq/images/0-ZjRhfRR3-untitled2-s-.png The EXE extension is automatically selected, then click Restore Close the dialog box If that doesn't work, try Solution 2: Download the following archive and extract it. If you are unsure on how to open the archive, use the instructions from here and continue. After you have extracted the archive, you should obtain a file labeled Fix EXE.reg. Double-click on the file and you will be asked whether you want to import the information into the registry or not. Answer Yes to the prompt and sometime later another dialog box will pop up informing you that the operation was successful. After you have done the above, reboot your computer. You should now be able to open EXE files. Note: Using the above registry fix might cause some programs to dysfunction or work incorrectly. In that case, please reinstall the affected programs to resolve their respective errors. Let us know how you get on :) Fix EXE.zip
16. Thanks for getting back to us, and we're glad to hear that it is fixed and you're up and running again :D Try to stick around, maybe you can learn more or even help someone else with a problem of their own :)
17. Hey Mike, Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Have you tried booting into safe mode again since your situation changed after using your disc?
18. Hey and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Woz!
19. Okay, just looking at the HP website and it seems there maybe an issue with constant fans, Have a read of this, it explains some symptoms and solutions to your problem, it does say that lowered performance is an issue, have you noticed this at all?
20. Do you mean it is running at 90% speed? What program/way did you use to find this info out? Temp and Fan settings should be customisable in the system BIOS settings. What is the model of your dv5?
21. Hi there chris. After reading the above quote, I would like to ask, did it get as far as installing a new driver? or not? Can you please try following Spools advice to get to Device Manager, then find this device mentioned above, (the one that WAS working). Right click on the device and select properties, There should be a button that says "Roll Back Driver" or similar, please can you click this and let it roll back the device driver to the previous version. If this does not solve your problem with this drive, do the same again, but click on "Update Driver" and let it search automatically online for the latest version. We would not recommend using any 3rd party Driver update programs such as the one you mentioned. Windows is perfectly capable of handling driver updates, and if not, the manufacturer's website will have all the updates needed. Let us know how you get on, apologies for the huge amount of answers and questions you are being asked right now. Also to make it clear which device we are talking about, please cna you list them in the following way: Drive that was never working: - Drive that recently stopped working: - Thanks.
22. Do you have any reason to want it turned off? It is running for a purpose and you'll find that if you turn it off, it will reach your reccommended temp very very quickly so it will be pointless having it off as it will just come back on a second or two later. The reason its down at that temp is because the fact that the fan is on.

24. Hey and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help :) glad to see such an extensive track record on someone not too far from me it seems (west midlands) :D Hope you enjoy being here
25. The next level would be Windows XP. It is probably not a concern, but what are the specs of your PC, just so we know it will comfortably run it, should you choose to upgrade.
