Where is my Wireless Connection switch?
BeeCeeBee replied to blackwidow59's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Blackwidow, I just want to follow up on Wolfey's question to you a bit and make a few comments that you may (hopefully) find helpful. It actually may be something as simple as a switch but since I am not familiar with the laptop and easynote is a line of lappys rather than a model it would be hard to look up. But do look around for any button or switch that may be there and if you find one, try it. My own daughter had that very same problem and swore that there was something wrong with hers. Since you say you used it in other homes (and I assume wirelessly) your problem is probably with the router. One basic question is whether any wireless connections have been made in your home with a different PC. But you did say that you just changed to wireless and if it isn't a switch hiding somewhere then best answer Wolfey's question before moving on to other things. With regard to a failure to hibernate or go to standby that usually is a sign of something running in the background (an application or program) again we would need a bit more information, but lets solve the wireless issue first so you can continue with us from the comfort of home. Finally I am going to suggest that you make a point of backing up everything on the PC that you consider important. If you look at the underside you will see a Microsoft label that probably starts with the letters OEM which basically means that it was loaded with the operating system by the Original Equipment Manufacturor who then supplied you with their own disk. It also means that even though your Windows operating system is perfectly legal and licensed you will not be able to reinstall it without reformatting your harddrive with that disk and losing everything you have put on since you first opened the box it came in. If you need help doing that again, please ask, that is what we are here for. Finally, we also want to invite you as a new member to look around, say hello and perhaps visit our off topic and fun stuff areas way at the bottom where we would welcome your thoughts about almost anything. Again, welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help!!:) -
Streaming and Player Problem
BeeCeeBee replied to raj_head's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Raj If you have the right codecs and there is no other obvious problem, the most likely reason for the media player not funtioning properly is probably due to a malware infection. It is important that we at very least rule that out. Please follow the instructions below and once you are done let us know if that has solved the problem. If it does not we will expore other possibilities. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup StepsDisable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. Streaming and Player Problem
BeeCeeBee replied to raj_head's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
This is just a quick post script to Dalo's reply. Once you find a site to download a codec. Be sure to google the site itself and make sure that there are no obvious complaints or issued being posted. There are a few sites out there that will download malware or spyware with the codec. It's unfortunate because you do need those codecs. -
Bebo and Social Network Issues!!
BeeCeeBee replied to BeeCeeBee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That makes me almost as angry as your original post. That reply is totally unacceptable. If it were me I would reply in the manner that you did above and that you are going to take it up with your MP. Protection of children is a hot item right now anyway. But that is me and I wouldn't blame you if you want to just put it behind you, As I said once before, your daughter is 19, what if she were 9. -
Well folks at least we can take some reasonable steps to protect our credit and debit cards even if it is only a decision not to use them at certain times. How about this - Over the past year there have been at least four news stories about stolen laptops from banks, insurance companies and even the Health Service Executive. (The Irish version of the NHS) All of them contained private information in data bases and each story was met by the usual BS about how good the encryption is on those files. They all fail to address the real issue. Who decided to allow our data to be stored in laptops that can be stolen while some somene is downing their Big Mac at the local Mcdonalds. Exactly who do they think they are that they can treat our privacy as if it was inventory in a parts department. Privacy is a thing of the past.

Hi Norman and Welcome back to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, Unless I am missing something I do not believe that you have ever been asked to do thorough malware check and removal. Bebo and Social Network Issues!!
BeeCeeBee replied to BeeCeeBee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That is pretty compelling stuff Goku! What happens around here is these sites are used as the primary means of communication among school kids. Often whole classes are on and anyone who is not is an outcast. So even if a child does not share much information his/her peers know who it is. There is little room for the free spirit, the different, the unattractive or anyone who may be subject to bullying. It used to be that the bullied dreaded going to school. That is bad enough but with this kind of thing going on even the safety of home is gone. Now add to that every kid with a mobile phone and a camera and it keeps getting worse. This is one area where govenment has to step in. As an American I have grown up with the concept of freedom of speech as a fundamental right. This type of thing is not speech. It is assault on a person, usually a weaker person or a vulnerable one, and is no more speech then assualt with a bat. -

BEBO HARASSMENT AND INVASION OF PRIVACY
BeeCeeBee replied to caskin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Just a quick note. I just read your latest post and want to quickly correct an impression I may have left by not rereading what I had written. Neither I nor anyone else associated with Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help would ever ask for you to post any settings that would identify your daughter, her PC or compromise her security in any way. She has suffered enough of that. What I had in mind was the general level of settings and choices given out by the site for security and protection. So that others more familiar with this kind of site may offer advice. I can see now that it may have been interpeted differntly and it is a lesson learned!! -
Bebo and Social Network Issues!!
BeeCeeBee replied to BeeCeeBee's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That was a great post Allheart and goes right to the nub of the problem. I don't know how big the specific site (Bebo) is in the states but I do know that it is very big over here (Ireland & the UK) I have listened from time to time to radio shows where parents complain about it being used to bully their kids. We all know that kids can be cruel but this really is a powerful weapon in the hands of a bully. Bebo is bigger then most ISP's so I don't think we can rely on them for help. Some specifics both for older kids and parents with younger ones might be helpful here. If you are using the site or others like it. What precautions should we take on the site itself and what should parents be looking for? To you out there who think this is overly simple stuff, I remind you that nothing is simple to those of us who simply do not know. This is a good time for "members to help other members." If we can save this kind of thing from happening to just one other child... I really don't think I need to finish that sentance. For some of our younger members who may not see a 19 year old young woman as a child. I suggest that it would be just as painful if she were 29, or 39. BUT what if she were just 9. Lets do our bit here however little it may be!!!! -

This morning one of our members posted a very disturbing issue concerning his daughter. We all know about these things but give them little thought unless it hits close to home. Well, if we are a community, then it has hit home. I suggest that the broader issue of the dangers (and the good I suppose ) presented by these sites is worthy of discussion and hope that some good comments and suggestions will be forthcoming. I do want to make 2 things very clear though. 1. This is not an invitation for anyone to post offensive material or discuss it in a manner that would otherwise be unacceptable. 2. This is not the place for jokes or funny annecdotes. That aside this really does present an opportunity for us to discuss ways to protect ourselves and our children. I think this is worthy of real discussion and maybe debate.

Hello again. I have been giving more thought to the serious social issues that you have raised. It really is disturbing. Shortly I will raise the issue in our community forums at the bottom but do not want to move your post as it belongs up here at the top. I also noticed your frustration about being unable to access the information yourself. It may well be that the poster was not only malicious him/herself but that it may also have contained some malware designed to do that very thing. Strictly from that perspective I suggest that when you feel ready you perform the anti malware tasks below. BEBO HARASSMENT AND INVASION OF PRIVACY
BeeCeeBee replied to caskin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hello Caskin My sole only reason for posting here is to let you know that I really feel for you. As a father with a daughter and 4 Granddaughters I know these Bebo type problems are only going to get worse as more people learn how to use it to harm others and that is sad. I wish we could do something to be of real help to ease your daughters pain but our seeing what has upset her so much will not be helpful to her. What I can suggest is that either you or she post information about her Bebo settings etc and maybe some of our members or staff can give you some help in trying to protect her from a repeat. I wish we could do more I really do. -
:) Hi Imran and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.:) I may not be the right person to solve your problem but I do want to make sure we have it right and maybe get a few answers that may help ease the process. If I have it right you cannot access your dektop icons at all and get an error sound when you try? You can access programs on the task bar including your strart button. When you hit the start button can you get to all your programs or only the ones in the Start menu? About the mouse. Can you get into your control panel using the start Menue? If you can, then check to see if there has been any change in the settings under mouse and that they are as you want them to be. I am just not sure of extent of your problem and we do want help you get it sorted. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Fisherman We appreciate the thanks but our real aim is to get you sorted. Your problem seems very close to one I had a month or so ago and was definately caused by a malware infection. What we suggest is that you take the following steps to detect any Malware and get rid of it. Once you are done come back and let us know how you made out and whether there has been an improvement and we will go from there. Your computer probably is infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. Randy our sole and exclusive reason for being down here is to make you happy and give you something to smile about. May I please have a list of other ways we can keep Randy happy and while you are at it since Dalo is an administrator now we should have a list for him too. Of course there is Wolfey but there is no point and making a list for him. He will only eat it!! -
