  1. I wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a very Happy New Year http://cdn.hdwallpaperspics.com/uploads/2012/11/Merry_Christmas-animated.gif
  2. Hi Terry and welcome to ExTS. 78 year old ........starbuck [ Admin here ] isn't far behind you :) I assume that your family upgraded that laptop ? With a hard drive that size I suspect it originally had XP on it. No - Win 7 will not take up 28GB on installation - but other things may. Microsoft Updates can take up some space AntiVirus logs - especially Norton or McAfee 1. If you are going to use this for internet use ......you DO have an AntiVirus running ? [ Which one ? ] 2. Let's take a look and see if we can get rid of some unnecessary files etc. Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup Follow the prompts here and let me know how much free space you have after this. 3. Download TFC from here: click here Install and run it. It will help you clear out temp files that aren't needed. 4. Click on the Recycle Bin [ Desktop ] File > Empty Recycle Bin Let us know how much free space there is now. 5. Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features This will tell you what programs are installed. It is possible to remove them to create space - but you MUST know what it is you are removing first. ==================== Just as an add-on ..... it is possible to get an external hard drive that plugs into the USB port of the laptop. If you are storing photos then you really need them backed up in 2 places ......just in case. External drives are quite cheap ..... click here
  3. Hi The log isn't showing anything that makes any sense to me :( It looks as if the problem lies with that particular RAM module ........ or the slot itself. The specs for your m/board are here: http://reviews.cnet.com/motherboards/asus-p5vd2-vm-se/4507-3049_7-32658931.html Take a look at the RAM specs: Bus Clock ...........667 / 533 / 400 MHz Speed ...............PC5300 / 4300 / 3200 Your first post suggests 333MHz for the RAM that you have installed. This is actually 666MHz ( as it is Double Data ) so this seems OK. On the module itself - does it suggest a voltage ? Could be 1.5 / 1.65 / 1.8 You could try running Memtest on your installed RAM click here You will need to leave it running for quite a few hours.
  4. I don't see why not Ray. Starbuck or etavares may be able to provide further info.
  5. It will do no hard to try the RAM one at a time. Yes - it has been known for RAM to be faulty right out of the box. It is more likely to be a RAM problem than SSD Do you have the old RAM ? You could try that if it was OK when you took it out.
  6. I would agree with you - 450 Watts Try running the RAM just one module at a time. ( assuming you have 2 modules ) Swap them over if the system still freezes.
  7. Thanks for the feedback Miles :)
  8. Just to add to what Nev has said .... I have just put together a pc out of old parts for my nephew. I put in 2 hard drives - ( both with an operating system on as a backup ....just in case ) There was no space for the second hard drive so I just taped it up underneath the primary drive. As Nev says - as long as it is out of the way it does not need to be "fixed" to the case.
  9. The minimum suggested Wattage for that Video Card is 400Watts. If this is a factory build ( Dell / Acer / HP etc ) it may well be that you have a PSU around 300 Watt. They certainly would not put over 400 Watts in a standard build. What is the make and model number of your pc ?
  10. Server RAM would be ECC BUT the notch would still be in the same place. If the notch is in a different position the RAM is NOT DDR2. If it says DDR2 on the label then it could be wrongly labeled. If it is wrongly labeled then you need to return it to the supplier. Your specific RAM should be DDR2 non-ECC with an operating voltage of 1.8v
  11. Hi and welcome to ExTS take a look at the pic below: http://forums.techguy.org/attachments/177941d1282928468/ddr-ddr2-ddr3-memory.jpg I am a little suspicious re. the RAM you have bought from eBay. Not all DDR2 RAM are compatible .....BUT the notch should be in the same place. What does it say on the label? Also if you measure accurately ...... is the notch in the right place ? On the RAM you have bought it should be between the 64th and 65th pins. [ this is the location for DDR2 RAM ] ( data sheet click here ) What have you got? I can give you further advice after you rely.
  12. :) Thanks for letting us know - and happy to have been of assistance :)
  13. Hi I think you need to try a USB wireless adapter. ( I doubt if it is virus related ) They are relatively cheap and will confirm if it is your present adapter playing up. There are some for under £10 click here To ease your mind re. the virus question download MBAM from here to a flash drive. ( you want the free version ) click here Transfer from the flash drive to the problem computer. Install and run it. It will produce a log. Copy this - save it to the flash drive - and post it here
  14. Hi, Not looking good. Did Windows actually see the DVD Drive as new hardware ? Try this: click here Delete the Upper and Lower Filters from the registry. I prefer to do this manually -but if you are not comfortable doing that there is a FixIt that should do it for you. Just to be on the safe side create a restore point. Start > type in ....system restore ....Enter Follow the prompts to create a restore point.
  15. Hi and welcome to ExTS Go back to Device Manager > click the + next to DVD CDROM Right click on the device > uninstall. Re-boot the machine. Windows will locate new hardware and install the drivers for it.
  16. One more thing to try: Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc .....Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters Right click on Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter > uninstall Reboot. Windows should locate new hardware and install the drivers again.
  17. Hi, Go back to the elevated command prompt Start > type in ....cmd .....( don't hit Enter ) Right click on the cmd.exe that shows top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type ... netsh int ip reset iplog.txt ......Enter ......[ note the spaces ] This will reset TCP/IP Then type in .... netsh winsock reset catalog .....Enter Try the connection now.
  18. I have a feeling that your Wireless Adapter may well have died. Click on the "Wireless Test" in my signature below. Download this to a flash drive. Transfer the flash drive to the problem pc and run it (double click on it ) from the flash drive. It will produce a log ( takes a few minutes to complete ) Copy this back to the flash drive then transfer it here please.
  19. Did it release / renew the IP and flush the DNS successfully or were there errors ? Yes - try connecting.
  20. I use this too :) Let's try this: Start > type in ....cmd .....( don't hit Enter ) Right click on the cmd.exe that shows top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type ... ipconfig /release ....Enter then ipconfig /renew then ipconfig /flushdns [in all cases there is a space after ipconfig ] Let me know the results Do you know the make and model number of the router ?
  21. Hi, we pride ourselves in replying quickly :) If you right click on the monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) > Connect to a Network Can you see your network? Have you tried connecting ? ( You will need the Network Key ) There is an option here .....Repair Give that a try. Let me know the results.
  22. Hi and welcome to ExTS Not that this will affect your problem - but you DO have an AntiVirus ? You certainly need one. If not we can recommend some good free ones. Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ....Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters. 1. What is listed ? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
  23. Hi John You should get the option to format from the disk. If you have the caddy handy you could put the drive in that and format it from there. Then try installing XP again.
  24. Hi John, Did you format the whole of the drive - or just create a smaller partition to put XP on ? If you still have part of the old partition in tact it could well be a virus .......however... I was going to suggest running chkdsk on the drive - but you get the same result on the second drive. I am coming around to suspecting the XP Pro disk. Is it a legitimate disk from a legitimate retailer ?
  25. I will ask one of our security experts to advise you on the next steps :)
