  1. Hi, Try deleting cookies - one could be corrupt. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete > delete cookies You will need to login again to sites like this where you use a login name and password.
  2. Hi yegum, Your description of how you bridged the burnt track took me back to when my son snapped the main circuit board for his guitar effects pedal. That was a double-sided board. I bridged every soldered joint using a machined down tip and magnifying glass as you did :) This was a number of years ago - it is still working. What concerns me is what caused your track to burn out in the first place ??
  3. Hi, If you are replacing the motherboard and you don't get exactly the same one, there is a distinct possibility that Windows will not boot up. The reason being that Windows is "clever" enough to know that it is in a different environment and assumes a different location. Hence it refuses to boot. The solution is a repair install of the operating system in XP - but with Vista There isn't exactly the same facility. I hope you get this in time before you buy :)
  4. One more thought - did you take the new card out when you tried the onboard video ?
  5. If it will not boot up in Safe Mode and you have tried the new and the old Video Card - and you have reinstalled Vista I am inclined to think that you have a problem with the motherboard. Do you get any POST beeps on startup ? One is normal - anything else you need to report the pattern - e.g. 1 long 2 short. Just out of curiosity - try taking the RAM modules out and try them one at at a time.
  6. Hi T, and a very Happy Christmas to you and you family :)
  7. Hi NoNothing, The specs for your card imply that, at full load, it requires no more than 75W so your 500W PSU should be more than ample. If your old card is still available try putting this back in and see if you still get the same problem. Also - try booting in Safe Mode and see if you can boot up. Constantly tap f8 (about once per second ) after switching on. From the options available select "Safe Mode" I doubt that changing the OS will solve this. If you have reinstalled Vista you have a "clean" OS. It could possibly be related to the Motherboard. If you can boot up in Safe Mode or with the old card this will take this option out of the equation.
  8. Merry Christmas to you too RandyL and Nev. I wish I could say this was my place - but I do live in Irby village :) http://www.allertonoak.com/images/TI09IrbyHall.jpg
  9. Hi Dave, You should be able to run the two programs together. Windows Defender is not an AV ( you wouldn't run two AVs on the same system ). Try disabling it and see if the system speeds up. I have Defender turned off and use MalwareBytes. How much RAM do you have in the problem pc ? EDIT sorry - added to the thread without seeing the other replies :)
  10. Hi, I would suggest that this is a bigger problem than the two operating systems on the one drive. I suggest that your friend does not use her computer for internet banking until she gets a clean bill of health from the security guys here. She must take all bank and finance details off the hard drive. Transfer them to a memory stick if necessary but get them off the hard disk. She should change login details. Change password and change login name. Transfer any cash to a different account - if this account must stay open leave only the basic amount of cash in it. Post this problem in the "Malware Removal" forum and get the system checked over. Your friend can manage for the time being with 2 versions of XP on the system but she must get her system checked over and make sure that her account details are secure. Good luck.
  11. Can't edit my post ..... Take a look here: How to Add Missing Search in Folders Context Menu in Windows Vista with SP1? - Tweaking with Vishal
  12. Hi, Does this help at all? How do I search for files in Windows Vista? :: Free Tech Support :: Ask Dave Taylor!® Also: I recently altered the registry on my own machine so that I could just type in part of a phrase or file extension into the search box. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ shell \ find click on the find folder itself ( not the arrow ) In the right pane there were 3 entries on mine. ( I apologise for the next bit ...) I deleted the one with "legacy" in the title. ( I realise that this is not very specific :) ) I do, however, get a list of files/folders/etc when I search for a specific word / phrase. I will do some digging and try to locate the exact "legacy" phrase as mine has now gone.
  13. The first thing to try is to change the CMOS battery on the motherboard. Did you notice the time and date not correct before your real problem started?
  14. Hi, If your friend's copy of XP had already been installed on his machine it would be illegal to install it on yours too. Do you have your own installation disk? If so I suggest a repair install of windows. If your friend's version of XP is the same as yours then you can use this - but if it is XP Pro and your installation is Home you cannot use it to repair your operating system. Post back and let us know the situation re. your O/S and the installation CD available.
  15. Hi TJ long time no see :)
  16. Regarding your passport details - You may find this link useful
  17. Hi J-B You could try Loot. Loot. I think it is free up to limit on the number of words used.
  18. If the email account is ISP based then I doubt that he will be able to receive mail in your name. The email address is directly linked to your phone number. If it has the ISP in the address xxx@tiscali.co.uk for instance, then that email address is tied to tiscali and cannot be used from any other ISP. I found this: LocatePC, Free Theft Recovery Software for your PC It claims to assist you in locating a stolen PC - for free - by sending you the IP Address and other info. The police could use this to locate the address of the thief. I am assuming that this is not for a trial period - may be worth looking at. There is similar software out there - use google. You could also install LogMeIn on the new laptop. This gives you remote access when the machine is switched on and connected to the net. It would be possible to discover the IP Address of the machine at its new location if it was stolen. From this the police can track down the thief. You could also seriously mess-up the machine if you had a mind to. ( You would need to access the machine when the thief was not present ).
  19. Hi tismehi, I am very sorry to hear that you have lost your laptop to a low-life ! If you used this machine for email - your address book will have details of all of your contacts and a long list of received / sent emails. You may wish to write to the important contacts and inform them if there is anything of a sensitive nature there and to warn them that they may receive unwanted mail. You could also be insured for the loss. Check with your car policy and your contents policy. If the laptop was on show it is unlikely that you will be covered. If you replace the lost machine I would advise using a password to enter Windows. It does not guarantee that another thief would not gain access but is does make it awkward.
  20. Hi J-B Have you thought about e-bay ? Possibly try putting a couple on at first just to test the market reaction. You can put a mimimum price on your sale. A good photograph helps too.
  21. Hi, It sounds as if your emails are being deleted from the server and not even getting to your inbox. Do you have a Spam Filter running? If so check the settings. I use a free utility that deletes directly from the ISP server - but this is not done automatically - you may well have this option. AVG has an email scanner option. If you are using Norton's email scanner does this mean that you have 2 AVs running? If so they will conflict and cause problems. If you DO have 2 AVs I would be tempted to uninstall Norton. It is a resource hog.
  22. Hi, This is a known issue with Firefox ( according to their site ) and they suggest that it is most likely to be your firewall settings. See here for further information: Firewalls - MozillaZine Knowledge Base
  23. As this is a new monitor - it could be that an internal setting is incorrect. Can you borrow a monitor that uses the same connection to see if you get the same condition. If the borrowed monitor is ok - your new one needs to be returned.
  24. Hi and welcome to fpch Switch on and constantly tap f8 ( about once per second ) You will be faced with the Advanced Start-up Options Select "Enable VGA Mode" Windows should boot and hopefully you should be able to read the text. Graphics will look odd - minimal drivers. Right click on the Desktop and select Properties > Settings Slide the Resolution across to the right. Click on Advanced. Select Monitor from the tabs. Set the Refresh Rate to 60Hz Apply and Save. Shut down and boot normally - hopefully you should see the text and graphics clearly.
  25. Switch off at the wall - leave the plug in to maintain the earth connection with your motherboard. If you take the side panel off and look inside the cable connected to your CD Drive - if it is a broad grey cable with 80 wires....it is IDE. If this is on its own cable ( not attached to the hard drive ) is there an empty connection on the motherboard that you can try ?
