  2. Hi Stuart and welcome :)
  3. So ...........you didn't win then ?? :)
  4. Happy to be of help :)
  5. It is extremely unlikely that the other pc would boot up using your hard drive. Windows is "clever" enough to know it is in a different environment ( different motherboard etc ) so refuses to boot. Take a look here - it may help How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP
  6. That's an interesting effect Bob - is it easy to achieve ?
  7. Start your computer in Safe Mode. Constantly tap f8 about once per second after switching on. From the Advanced Startup Options select "Safe Mode" Start > My Computer Right click on the drive that you want to take ownership of > Properties Click on the "Security" tab > Advanced > Owner Under "change owner to": select your username Check the "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" > Apply > Permissions Click the "Add" button Type "everyone" for all users to be able to access the drive. Click OK. Click the "full control"checkbox under "Allow" > OK. Check the "replace permission entries on all child objects..." checkbox > OK I would think that you should be OK - but I cannot guarantee. If you are asking - can you move folders etc to a different external drive and access them from there the answer should be yes. You may find that you still have access problems. The thing to do is to move a small number of files / folders and see if you can access them on the other external drive.
  8. The pop-up is suggesting that there are possible problems - click on the recommended and let Windows "fix". I think that you need to take ownership of your files / folders. See here
  9. Hi, Boot up in Safe Mode. Start > Run ...type in ...devmgmt.msc ....OK Are there any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager ? If so please supply details.
  10. Hi, It does help - well done for sorting out how to post it :) It looks as if your external hard drive is showing up as Disk 1. This is not initialized. Normally new disks need to be initialized. Disks with an Operating System on them should not be a problem. There would seem to be a problem with your hard drive. Try this: Go back to disk management and right click on Disk 1 If "Change Drive letter" is an option click on this and allocate a drive letter that is not being used. (I doubt that this will be an option as there is no letter assigned - but it is worth a try ). Also try leaving the drive plugged into USB port - shut down normally. Unplug from the wall. Press the start button ( leaving the wall plug out ) Replace the wall plug and switch on. Check access to the drive again.
  11. Are you sure that the folks here are ready for yours T ? :)
  12. Take the sound card, ethernet card and any other cards that you have on the motherboard out. Leave the Video Card and the RAM in. Try booting up normally. If it boots up normally put the cards back one at a time until the problem is re-created.
  13. Hii, Take a look here: Computer does not shut down properly if Selective Suspend is enabled If this does not resolve the problem you can go back and reverse the setting.
  14. Has your system been doing this since the installation of the motherboard or was it OK for a while ? Try "Last Known Good Configuration" Constantly tap f8 (about once per second) after switching on. Select Last Known G C from the list. If this fails use f8 again and use "Safe Mode" Run the system in Safe Mode. Let us know if the problem is still there in Safe Mode or if it is OK.
  15. Just a further note: ( stable door syndrome I am afraid :) ) Registry Cleaners / File Cleaners should be selected with care. I don't recommend using Registry Cleaners at all. The registry is far too sensitive. Duplicate files should never be removed. TFC is the file cleaner of choice at the moment with many mods / security experts. TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer -> Anti-malware Tools -> Downloads
  16. Hi, When you put in the new m/b did you do a repair install / re-install of Windows? If not this is your problem. Windows is "clever" enough to recognise a new environment and refuses to boot up. The solution, if you have the XP disk, is to run a repair install. This will correct the problem and allow you to keep all data on your hard drive.
  17. Hi jammy and welcome. You should have started a new thread ( no doubt the mods will move these posts :) ) Basically what you have is an illegal copy of Windows on your system. Nobody here will assist you with that I am afraid. Unless you arranged a dual-boot ( 2 Operating Systems ) then your only option is to format and re-install a legal copy of Windows. If you have an XP disk you can use this - if not you may wish to upgrade to Vista or Win 7.
  18. Does it show the disk as "New Volume" is diskmanagement ? You may find this useful: How to Post a Screen Shot in a Forum | eHow.com Many use imageshack
  19. When you switch on the power to the adapter - does the drive spin ? Start > Run Type in .....diskmgmt.msc ......ENTER Is the drive listed in Diskmanagement ? It will be E:\ or F:\
  20. Hi, What you are refering to looks like an RF Choke. It has a ferrite ( carbon based ) core and copper windings. It is used to filter high frequencies from other electronic devices ( TV for instance ). Not all M/Bs have them. They don't usually fail. What has happened to yours? If it has failed - replacing it may not solve the problem.
  21. Hi, There are usually 4 screws holding the drive in place. 2 on either side. You may need to remove a panel on both sides of the case. This link may help: Replacing a Hard Drive - Illustrated How to Replace a Hard Drive
  22. Take a look here - it may help Explanation of error codes generated by Device Manager in Windows XP Professional
  23. Hi, You are correct re. Windows Easy Transfer Cable- both computers must be working and you need to install software to enable the transfer of data.
  24. Hi, You will need to take the hard drive out of your old computer. If this is a laptop it will be a 2.5 inch drive. If it is a desktop it will be a 3.5 inch drive. There are a few options open to you but the easiest is probably to buy an ide / sata to USB converter. If your hard drive had a wide grey cable connecting it to the motherboard it is ide. If there are just 4 cables it is SATA. The link here shows a converter that will cover both types of hard drive. It is simply a matter of connecting the drive to the adapter and plugging it into the USB port. The drive, if it is able to be read, will show up in My Computer as E:\ ( or other letter ) and can be accessed like any other device.
  25. To add to what Match has said: I have just banned a member on another forum. In doing so another member with the same IP Address was highlighted. The second member was automatically banned - as the IP Address was the same. There is no way of knowing if it is the same person or two people. I not only ban the IP Address but the email address and the login name too. It is unfortunate if you share a router with somebody who does not use forum etiquette.
