I am having the same problem. I have trcked my problem down to being a bios problem although I don't know the fix.

I go to Windows update in control panel and tell it to check for updates and I get: "windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart." I've restarted multiple times and still no luck. I checked for solutions on microsoft forums, one sollution I found was to update defender first, I do this and it tells me defender isnt installed. I cant install it because the installer says it comes with Vista ( updated from vista to 7 ). View this thread

Had to use Recovery Disk and reformat my hard drive ... Now when I try to get updates (For practically everything) I can't. I can't use Windows update, gives Error number: 0x8024400A . Ik blijk niet de enige te zijn die door Microsoft met dit probleem geconfronteerd wordt. Als ik systeemherstel toepas dan komt de printer weer beschikbaar maar na afsluiting van de computer wordt automatisch de update agent weer geinstalleerd waardoor de printer weer niet werkt. I am running Windows XP with Service pack 3. Microsoft Security essentials is the security system. When I try to run Windows Update using Internet Explorer 8, at the point the page is checking whether my system has the correct Updating Software, the page fails, eventually showing the message "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears the website continues to have a problem." This recurs every time I repeat the initial attempt, or click on "Return to microsoft.com" on the error message page. I have run MSE three times. Each time it has found TrojanDropper:Win32/Dunik!rts. When taking the recommended action the progress bar gets 3/4 finished and then reports an error code of 0x800700df. It says the file size exceeds the limit allowed and cannot be saved. MSE then says that my PC is protected although if you run another full scan it continues to find it. How can I remove this from my PC? I think it's responsible for hacking my e-mail account yesterday. View this thread

A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware. Q: Does installing Microsoft Security Essentials disable Windows Defender A: Microsoft Security Essentials should disable Windows Defender on Vista and Windows 7 and uninstall it from XP. In some cases, this does not happen automatically. My question is the following: I forgot the file extentions for CP applets and Windows 7 may have changed this anyway, but how do I remove the Windows Defender option from Control Panel? I have followed all the advice on the link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB976982 relating to windows update error but still will not work and left with two updates that will be permanently there unless someone can help advise? . I have both errors relating to code 80070643 (see link) for 2007 office suite service pack and the Net Frame work. I have followed all advice to know avail. Using Windows Visa home basic. I have a new hard drive and a new installation of Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I get an update advisory for SP1. it is 1.9MB and after installation it says successfully installed yet SP1 is not.
