How to Manage Large Number of Windows Updates
AWS posted a topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
After a recent problem, I have done a clean install of Windows Vista 32 bit Business from my installation CD, with SP1 included. Once installed, windows update informec me that there were 130+ updates to install and kept crashing the PC whilst trying to download them. After several attempts, I reformatted and re-installed windows, then downloaded SP2 immediately. There are still lots of updates to download, but first the newer version of Windows Update installed itself. The new format userpage only allows updates to be sorted by filesize or by name, so they are not in date order. It seems to me that logically, I ought to install updates in the order that they were released to prevent any conflicts. Does it matter if updates are not installed in release-date order? What order should I install the updates in? (I've found that by only selecting a few at a time from the list, after much hard work I can at least install them without the PC crashing.)Also, my system is still unstable and I intend to re-load everything again to make sure I didn't make any mistakes. Is it possible to download updates to a folder on another drive to prevent the need for downloading them all again if the same problem persists. Many thanks for your assistance, from a frustrated and inexperienced user! I have an Acer Aspire AMD E-350 processor 64 bit Window 7 service pack 1. I only have 29 windows updates and have been informed that I should have more. Is this correct? I have tried requesting updates without any updates available. If I should have more updates how do I get them? Look forward to any advice you may have:) View this thread

Getting this error '8024200D' every single time Win Update runs (20-30 times now). Says that this is an important Security Update 'KB2585542' for my Win 7 Prof x64 with SP1. It creates a system restore point, and starts installing (install bar gets about 60% across each time) and then bombs out with Update failed: unknown error '8024200D'. Multiple times, I've tried the MS Fixit tool, System Update Readiness Tool, Win 7 Clean Boot instructions, Malicious Software Removal Tool, the mysterious MS automatic troubleshooter, have fiddled with Update settings, and tried following the advice that I could understand from the MS website, FAQs, & KnowledgeBase (even running as administrator, I absolutely cannot rename SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old as suggested, and when I run cmd.exe, I get 'system error 5'; 'access denied' when trying to 'net stop wuauserv'). Other Updates have installed fine, but this one won't. Home computer; very unsophisticated user. View this thread

Brand new build, brand new Windows 8 install. NOT AN UPGRADE. Windows 8 Update fails to work. There are several of the problematic Windows 8 upgrades that refuse to install. We have tried all of the solutions we can find here and on other forums. Clean boot, Windows Update Troubleshooter, and NO it is not the NPL service. This is a clean install and there are literally no 3rd party services running on the machine at the moment. Please need to get some help with this before I just format the darn drive and put an o/s on this machine that I know works (e.g. Windows 7) It is really bad to see all of the issues with something that should be a simple, 10 minute job e.g. bring the machine up to the latest version of the OS! I was recently infected with the Trojan:Win32/Urausy.D Trojan Horse on Windows 7. Windows Security Essentials detected and removed it successfully. However, it said I had an "active" infection and had a red, severe alert. I am trying to figure out if some of my data may have been compromised. I think the anti-virus scanner found it in an old update to nero I have not used recently and did not install on this version of Windows, so maybe I am OK? I am hoping this because of the containerfile entry, but am not sure, although the fact that it said "Active" in the alert worries me. Also, the next question is why did this fire on a nero download? I am pretty sure I have never downloaded a nero download except from the actual Nero AG site, but of course this looks like Jan/Feb of 2012 so I cannot be 100% positive, but I am normally very careful. Here is the System Event Log Entry: Microsoft Antimalware has detected malware or other potentially unwanted software. Hi everyone, I bought a laptop Toshiba C855-S5350 17 days ago. First the Windows 8 activated and then few days ago it is not activate any more. It require a new key. I brought back to Staples but I was out of return policy. They ask me contact to Windows Microsoft but they ask me to pay for $299.99 for the key meanwhile my laptop was only $255. What should I do? There is any way to activate the window? Is that every laptop windows 8 requires to buy the key separately to activate the windows? I appriciate your help. View this thread

The subject line says it all. The original update was entitled "Windows Management Framwork Core". The new KB968930 is entitled "Windows Powershell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0 for Windows Vista". How can two different updates be labeled the same? The new one will not install on my Vista system. View this thread
