I used the windows 8 install wizard and selected the "Just keep personal files" setting. After installing windows 8 I noticed my program files folder is almost completely empty, just some things that come as standard. Everything that I installed before the update had disappeared completely, but they must still be somewhere on the hard drive, because it has exactly as much free space as before. Is this normal? Is there any way I can still access my old installed applications? MSI GX660r Intel Core i5 CPu M 480 @2.67GHz Windows 8 Pro 64 bit ATI HD 5870 View the full article

Hi! I have a default toshiba install of windows 8 on my system. The only uncommon program that I'm running is classic shell but I'm only using the start menu button (no windows explorer integration). Windows explorer crashes almost every day. Any idea of what I can do to fix this? This is a sample of what I have on the reliability monitor: Description Faulting Application Path: C:Windowsexplorer.exe Problem signature Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: explorer.exe Application Version: 6.2.9200.16433 Application Timestamp: 50763312 Fault Module Name: StackHash_3d1c Fault Module Version: 6.2.9200.16420 Fault Module Timestamp: 505ab405 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: PCH_8E_FROM_ntdll+0x0000000000002C2A OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.768.101 Locale ID: 2070 Additional Information 1: 3d1c Additional Information 2: 3d1cf2c2d250fdb71eba88c0b52dee11 Additional Information 3: a4a0 Additional Information 4: a4a01cc309b2ee2bbf8c980bf40ccc29 Extra information about the problem Bucket ID: fd46690ea7665fb2b5befd3c72f60fdd (83249378) Description Faulting Application Path: C:Windowsexplorer.exe Problem signature Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: explorer.exe Application Version: 6.2.9200.16433 Application Timestamp: 50763312 Fault Module Name: StackHash_5c5e Fault Module Version: 6.2.9200.16420 Fault Module Timestamp: 505ab405 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: PCH_EB_FROM_ntdll+0x0000000000002C2A OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.768.101 Locale ID: 2070 Additional Information 1: 5c5e Additional Information 2: 5c5e2075ce895f370eeac17146cffcdd Additional Information 3: 74c6 Additional Information 4: 74c6e6b196743fa40b7c41099f8ce5fa Extra information about the problem Bucket ID: 0d2c9cb1a5b8d3708aeeb1d993358866 (83251278) Description Faulting Application Path: C:Windowsexplorer.exe Problem signature Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Explorer.EXE Application Version: 6.2.9200.16433 Application Timestamp: 50763312 Fault Module Name: StackHash_a4fc Fault Module Version: 6.2.9200.16420 Fault Module Timestamp: 505ab405 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: PCH_EB_FROM_ntdll+0x0000000000002C2A OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.768.101 Locale ID: 2070 Additional Information 1: a4fc Additional Information 2: a4fc3754ac38ca147cb50291d90f9705 Additional Information 3: 3aae Additional Information 4: 3aae6da14894492df7e34f84569490e7 Extra information about the problem Bucket ID: 4d7d84820b28e528ef1508f68d332ad3 (83230981) Description Faulting Application Path: C:Windowsexplorer.exe Problem signature Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: explorer.exe Application Version: 6.2.9200.16433 Application Timestamp: 50763312 Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll Fault Module Version: 6.2.9200.16420 Fault Module Timestamp: 505ab405 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00000000000059cd OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.768.101 Locale ID: 2070 Additional Information 1: 4b9d Additional Information 2: 4b9dd7107c7c5e33259f9e5cbcb4fb6b Additional Information 3: 6afe Additional Information 4: 6afe13371210290525843e13c180a2b5 Extra information about the problem Bucket ID: 2fcff234faaf746feaba3dd63c40a3b4 (83549735) View the full article

i have recently built a computer running win 7 home with an MSI motherboard. the problem i am having is that on startup, the computer gets to the windows splash screen then it restarts and then i get a message saying windows did not shut down properly. I click the "start windows normally" option and then the computer starts fine and works perfectly. If i do a restart I don't have this problem. I have run memory diagnostics . I'm not sure if this is a windows install problem or a hardware problem thanks for your help View the thread

windows 8 Windows 8 Patch Mgt / Service Pack
News Bot posted a topic in Operating Systems Help & Support
Understand from some forums that Windows 8 will not be having the convectional approach of coming out with SP1. How will the patches work for enterprise if there won't be a SP1 release for Windows 8? Can someone from Microsoft verify that this infomation is correct? Does it means, likewise for Windows 7, there will not be a SP2 for Windows 7. It will be taking the same approach as Windows 8? someone from www.pcrecure.com called and advised me that my computer was guaranteed to crash in 3-4 days because they had received so many error messages from my computer. He said someone had hacked my computer and I needed to purchase their protection. Is this a scam? View this thread

Hello: Before I go to bed here after messing with this half the night, I can't install Window 8 Pro over the existing Win 8 non Pro on my new Toshiba Satellite laptop. It's ridiculous. I really don't care what's on this HD from Toshiba. I formatted it anyway so it's gone. This laptop has the ability to work with SLAT or virtualization. I need to enable hyper-v which is on Win 8 Pro. But Win 8 Pro will not overlay the existing O/S even after I booted off of the dvd and went through the install process on a format and install from the upgrade dvd. When looking at the O/S description about Windows 8 after the install, it says it just Windows 8 and not Windows 8 Pro. And in the Install Programs and Features/Windows Components, the Hyper-V is not there to install and enable it in the list. And the product key is not the key for Windows 8 Pro. The key is for the Win 8 that was already installed. I think the main problem is during the install process, it never stops and asks for the Win 8 Pro product-key. Whatever is happening, I need to come around this stupid problem. I am tired of it. For now, I am going to bed. What can I do oh what can I do to get Win 8 pro installed on this stupid machine. I recently upgraded from Windows 7 (64bit) to Windows 8 Pro. At my start screen I can not search my computer by just typing. Nor can I search my computer from the search in the charms menu. When I try to search for files, programs and apps on my computer it automatically says "This app can't be search." I have tried rebooting and it did nothing, please help. -Dave View the full article

I have a 10-year old Toshiba laptop that has always been offline. It has no service packs.I have tried to connect it, but the old IE cuts out before I can do very much.I have a desktop machine that is up to date. Can I download to the desktop and write to a flash drive as a way of getting working software: IE first, then the service packs.(I purchased a Service Pack 3 CD, but it won't install without Service Pack 1). I recently installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on my home server. Install went fine and I can connect to the internet. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on my desktop, and the server does not appear on the network. I can ping it by IP address, but not by name. When I ping it by name, it pings a different IP address. I have my IP address assigned by DHCP. What I'm trying to do is enable remote desktop. View this thread

I update and save quite a few files each day, and I can see in File History that there are many saved versions for these files. This would fill up my backup drive fairly quickly, and therefore, I need to reduce 'Keep saved versions' from the default of 'forever' to about 3 months. But does this mean that all files older than 3 months will be deleted my File History backup? What happens to all my files that have only ever been saved once, but are older than 3 months? Are these retained in File History or deleted? The forums on File History do no make this very clear. View the full article

Hi All,I see this problem has affected many people but what fixed their problem does not work for me.I have Windows 7 Ultimate x86, up to date, installed but can not access the public folder unless I go directly to C:UsersPublic myself. I have everything shown and not hidden, except the system files, and no public folder shows up anywhere. No open/save dialog shows the public folder as an option. I even tried registry fixes and they did not work. What am I missing? Where did MS hide the public folder icon and why does it not show as an option in any open/save dialog? Thanks for any help,Charles View the thread
