  2. I tried to schedule a meeting using the Calendar Tile Windows 8. Help indicates that you can. It says use the "Who" field, which I am not seeing. Im guessing that it may not be showing up because I have no one in any people lest or email. So, if anyone has an answer... better yet a Youtube clip link would be good. Or, not implemented...have to have outlook...whatever. Also, I did not buy the Pro version this time. Thanks View the full article

  4. I just got a new computer with windows 8 and internet explorer 10. My computer locks up and freezes all the time when I go to run a program, internet explorer crashes anytime I try to use it, and when I do get internet explorer 10 open, I cant open more than one tab because it will lock up and not load anything. Pages wont load and will just sit there for hours on end with a blank white screen. Is there any reason why this is happening? I downgraded to windows 7 for a while and all of these problems went away. So I decided to go back to windows 8 and all of these errors came right back. View the full article

  7. Hi, I have a windows 8 workstation setup for testing. I am having an issue with the temporary internet files. When you login with a local user everything works fine, however as soon as I enable domain access and login with the administrator account the temporary internet files folder becomes locked. It becomes set to size 0 and is not usable. If I try to set a size it will only allow up to 10 and then once you close the properties and open it back up its back to 0. I have windows 7 and xp workstations with no issues. I have tried to change permissions but there is no permission tab on the properties of the folder itself. I am trying to determine else to look at to solve the issue. Thanks, EddieA View the full article

  11. A file I encrypted with Truecrypt mysteriously was moved to a different folder on the same drive. The folder is named '755d3851e9b156252c7f93106a7e' and I can not modify the permissions to move the encrypted back. This seems to have happened just prior to a major update from MS. Thanks for assistance. View this thread
  12. Hello, I use a program (Beyond Compare) which has a Folder Compare module, with a function for doing a binary comparison between the files inside two folders. I use it to check the integrity of my backups, by comparing my main hard disk files, with the ones on the backup hard disks. If two files get recognized as being different, then one of them should be corrupt (if they didn't get modified "normally"). My question is: will this method work to detect real file corruptions? Will it detect any kind of corruption, both copy corruptions, and "bit rot" corruptions? Will there be no problem regarding read cache? I mean: if the first file to compare gets read from disk, and is kept in a read cache (by Windows or by the hard disk, or by something else), will the second file get read from the same cache (if Windows or the hard disk think they are identical files)? Do Windows and hard disks have some kind of procedure to detect if a file to read from disk is already available in cache, even if it is in a different folder than the "original" one? Perhaps some kind of file-checksum-system which decides that the files are same? (And this system would not notice if the file to compare is corrupt). If this would be true, then integrity checks by file comparison would not work, because in practice the same file would be read twice (first from disk, and then from cache), instead of reading both the two files to be compared from disk. I have already done tests by manually "corrupting" files (changing slightly the contents, while keeping size and timestamp the same), and it works (the files get recognized as different). But I'm not sure if it will work also with "real" corrupt files. I'm interested mostly about Windows 8 Pro 64bit and NTFS (but would like to know also in general). Thanks. View the full article

  22. Who deleted the thread? Did anything I typed caused offense? What I was trying to say is that touch is not a virtue. It is a necessity to solve a particular evil, ie very small displays that were a compromise to achieve mobility on cellphones. When screens are very small, to see the content you want to see, there has to be continuous zooming in/out and panning. Touch is the best option for this right now. If you have used the joystick on the old Nokia E-71 you will understand me perfectly. Microsoft shouldn't be blindly chasing touch just because Steve jobs looked cool demonstrating it on stage. Touch, as I had illustrated earlier, is a drawback in most other situations, even on the cellphone. PCs (I mean mainly laptops as that appears to be the most popular PC form factor now) do not have the limitation of cellphone screens. Hence touch is very out of place. When Windows 8 is optimized for touch, it causes headaches for PC users. Eg touch requires an icon to be huge enough so that the chubby finger doesn't touch the wrong one, so in addition to size they must be spaced out, but with a mouse (touchpad on a notebook), the hotspot is exactly 1 pixel in size. It is two vastly different worlds. The design for touch does not just increase the size of a button. It affects the whole PC. So instead of a Start menu, you have a Start screen. On a 1920x1080 display, the Start screen is ten times slower than the Start menu simply because it has to render and move ten times as many pixels, most of which are useless to a mouse hotspot of 1x1pixel.
