WinXP serv pack 3: My Wordpad will directly open a given .rtf file from "File open" in the Wordpad program but after setting the default file options in Control Panel and then double clicking on the same .rtf file, I get "... the xx.rtf file is not a valid Win32 application." my notebook (hand me down) is prone to temper tantrums and I've just recently recovered my OS (windows7 pro 64 bit SP1) OEM Vista - win7 H.P. x64 - Win7 Ultimate x64 - back to HmPrem - and now my current installation. Beware of relatives unintentionally giving you their headaches, ie: computers w/o product keys and scratcthed inst dsks. With this machine's history, it would be prudent to take steps to protect my computer from that dreaded 'startup repair can't automatically fix your computer'. So, I have this sense of urgency to get a viable backup for my computer. So far I've had a notoriously bad experience restoring backups from flash drives and CD-Rs etc. I seriously don't want to purchase an external hard drive and on-line storage just plain scares me. Can someone help an old man get reliable directions to the straightest route to creating a safe environment prior to creating a system image backup? Thanks and Happy Trails. < < < How quaint is that? I have Windows 7 on an HP computer with an ACER monitor. Lately when either myself or the time-out puts the computer in sleep mode, it won't wake up no matter what I do. After I downloaded a Windows Critical Update the icons on my taskbar changed, so I tried doing a System Restore. Now I can't complete System Restore getting message: failed to extract the file (C:$Extend$RmMetadata$Txf) from the Restore point. An unexplained error occurred during System Restores (0x80070005). I am running Windows XP, SP3, with NET Framework 4. I have some old software I need to re-install that requires Framework 3.5, which can be downloaded from MS. But, is it okay to have both 4 and 3.5 installed at the same time? I don't want to delete 4 just for this temporary application unless absolutely necessary. This would be temporary, as the task with the old software can be quickly accomplished and then everything restored. View this thread

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on one of my two laptops...both identical, I might add. On one, the computer shuts down in the midst of whatever I am doing in order to update and usually with no warning. This is always frustrating as I am not able to save what I am doing. AVCHD (.MTS) videos shooted in sony camera do not play sound in windows media player. please help i have converted these videos to .mp4, avi and wmv formats and get sound. but the problem is that when i edit it (trim) in windows movie maker and save it i get no video but sound only. my pc is windows 7 32 bit home basic. can some one really help me thanks Jubin View the thread

I am trying to setup an Appache Web Server to experiment with WordPress development. I installed a program called XAMPP that installs the MYSQL server, the Appache server and the necessary PHP stuff to create a working environment. The book author suggested that I create a separate directory C:WPDev to use for WordPress development. I was able to make the necessary changes to the httpd.conf file to get the Apache server to recognize this location, but now I can't get back to the PHPAdmin panel that I need to manipulate the MySQL database. So, what I thought I would do is to create a symbolic link back to the original webroot folder to be able to access those applications. The command to do this, I have read is: MKLINK [[/D] | [/H] | [/J]] Link Target /D Creates a directory symbolic link. Default is a file symbolic link. /H Creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link. /J Creates a Directory Junction. Link specifies the new symbolic link name. Target specifies the path (relative or absolute) that the new link refers to. My problem now is this. I am logged on as administrator and yet I am getting this error message when I try to use the command: c:WPDev>mklink /D xampp C:xampphtdocsYou do not have sufficient privilege to perform this operation. Why don't I have sufficient privileges to perform this operation as the administrator on this machine? This does not make whole lot of sense to me. My guess is that it has to do with permissions given to this administrator user ID. It looks like the directory WPDev inherits permissions from the parent drive, however unlike Windows XP, I can't just take control of this directory and start altering permissions. When I look at the summary permissions, I think that I should be able to do it. I think that I have full permissions, but there may be something about the mklink command that I am missing. I have been using Windows 7 on this same computer for 2 year. For some reason I couldn't log into various sites I normally used. I attempted to repair using installation disk and was told key was invalid. I wiped out hard disk and attempted a clean install, and again key was invalid. What do I need to do at this point.
