  1. im gonna fly in the face of common opinion and say ill be sticking with Vista x64 for a while yet anyway. May well dual boot with 7 but I am not as impressed as most with it so far and XP mode is a joke give me VMware anyday :)
  2. That will be the case no matter what if a system file is infected the chances of cleaning it are pretty slim and the end result would be the same. The other option at this point would be to download malwarebytes and superantispyware and burn to a cd and try and install them from a cd. New did you look at the icons by the clock for some sort of rogue app it will be pretending to be a security app hit win key and run and type msconfig click start up tab and list what is there (this could have been disabled by the malware thought)
  3. 70degrees is not hot for a gpu under load @ the OP the 8800GTX isnt that powerfull nowadays and the 768 meg version dates it to the first revision of the 8800 graphics cards ;)
  4. hmmmmmm it should be there somewhere have a good look around it will be under wireless somewhere
  5. Not a chance I am ver patient hold on a sec ill go back to the manual Just click wireless and it appears to say enable or disable wireless functionality set it to disabled then click apply settings
  6. OK looked at the manual (or what should be) Open internet explorer and type 192.168.2.1 into the address bar and go the password will be blank ie nothing typed if you have not set one already so either enter your password or not and press enter Click wireless on the left and disable save settings and exit wireless is now off just do the same and re enable to turn it on again
  7. do you have the manual for the router? all you will need to do is enter the config pages by using the router ip enter user name and password often if left default this will be admin, password or admin admin or user password or similar and just turn off wireless. If you do not have the manual here is a slightly more complex way press win key and r at the same time. in the run box type cmd. type ipconfig /all look for default gateway. type default gateway into browser window ie 192.168.*.* (the stars will be numbers) type in user name and password you may have set this when you first set up router or try combination as I mentioned. Then simply disable wireless which will be easy to find once you open the config
  8. dont you want the laptop to connect anymore? you can turn the wireless off in the router settings but if you turn the router itself off you will need to connect the modem diectly to the pc reboot both the modem and the pc but your laptop wont get the net anymore
  9. If we could assertain what spyware it is we would be able to hold his hand while doing it ;) you are asking the same member to possibly remove a drive add it to a new machine possibly risk infection to the second machine which is also not easy for the none tech ;) op could perhaps try this Free F-Secure Rescue Bootable CD to Clean Virus and Malware
  10. His USB does not work ;) I visited a client the other week and his machine was infested with WinPCDefender 2009 I think it was. Standard warnings buy me and ill get rid kinda things no internet connection etc . All I had to do was stop its runnign process browse using my mobile phone to find reg entries search them out delete the keys or entries a couple of other little files and it was gone. It did not take long really
  11. Ive had problems with loads of them. Current board is Asus in fact my main machine has had Asus boards in for a while now. I like the look of the Gigabyte x58 boards though
  12. chances are they are gonna be linked solve the spyware problem first
  13. If XP is present on a machine prior to installing Vista or Win7 dual boot should work without hassle. If you install XP after Vista then the bootloader will be taken over by the old method and you need to repair start up for vista then edit the bcd either way is not really difficult. Peoples opinion of Win7 I think is misplaced due to the fact the norm is for people to dislike Vista so they are biased in favour of 7 as its not Vista. There have been some real world bench tests that only give Win7 a small performance mark than Vista and my personal experience of a properly configured Vista box and a properly configured Win7 box bares this out. Win7 on the desktop is faster a bit and it is like a tuned up version of Vista but it is not the messiah lol
  14. Right click my comp and select manage then event viewer and have a look for possible hard drive errors I would download memtest86+ Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool burn to cd and boot from the cd and run a pass or 2
  15. Ive cleared systems of these kinda things loads of times its just a matter of finding out which it is all the info is out there to manually delete files and reg entries
  16. I would not expect to get away with it
  17. is this tha same machine as the spyware problem?
  18. This programs only goal is to sell you itself. There should be some identifying name to it. By your clock hover your mouse over each ican and list what they are for us. These apps always run from startup and as a rule do show themselves you could try running malwarebytes free software if the system will allow you
  19. can you open the security report and tell us what the product is its trying to sell you? there are loads of these about all needing different treatments. The latest one ive had to deal with was WIN PC Defender which acts the same as this
  20. No it isnt not on a proper operating system cd when you see your operating system in a list you just ignore it go onto the next stage of the install and it will perform a complete install o your hard drive without messing with the file structure. After windows is installed and virus free you simply remove the old xp from the boot record and its as if you have installed from scratch.
  21. you simply use the options to install windows from scratch you are offered format choices you just leave it intact leaving data on the drive. This is a proper operating system disc I take it?
  22. I recently dropped support for Avast , Which magazine in the uk run tests on free and paid for AVs and Avast was one of the worst performers AVG was the best of the free scans The OP has Bart PE if he tries my way it could save time unless the virus has caused some mbr problem gotta be worth a go first?
  23. boot using bart pe then move all your data into a folder and delete all other directories. Install windows leaving file system intact once installed virus scan the whole thing if its ok you can then install all you need and move your data to whereever
  24. @ the op as long as this is legally yours then you will need to convert the dvd to a format which Youtube can use there are lots of apps out there that can do this I use TMPGenc express but this may well be far to complicated. EDIT if you want a quick and easy fix for this you could play the dvd on your pc and capture the bits you want to use with fraps
  25. No it uses Bart PE as its backbone but heavily modified.
