  1. Hi Yes that is a possiblity but u would have to scan his old drive first.. tell him to plug it back in, boot to safe mode with networking (you seem knowledgable enough to tell him). then run a eset online virus scan then a kasperky scan. remove anything he finds..... if not boot the same screen by tapping F8, then choose "disable restarst on system failure" then let it blue screen. tell us the error code, usually 000000x? unless a lot more info is provided then i cant help anymore.

  10. Hi have a look at the microsoft link i sent above. the only other ways so far is a PE cd,,,this you can download to....ERD commander (awesome tools, can do system restore on an unbootable drive).or putting your hard drive in an external caddy and testing it on another pc. regards danzil PE cd=http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ ERD commander cd=http://www.geekstogo.com/2009/01/17/erd-commander-free-trial-from-microsoft/ i would try ERD 1st
  11. Hi if you did a disk to disk clone then it would be as it was before, but we more capacity. just like you had a bigger drive in the first place. and your ercovery cd will still work because you would have also cloned the "hidden partition"(the part of the drive that store your recovery data). regards danzil
  12. hi if the drive is powered up and spinning without clicking etc, there is still a good chance of getting your data off the drive. in my honest opnion i would try an external caddy, nad some decent recovery software. like ontrack, or easus. it is wirth a try. well it does all depend on how much your data is worth to you... a caddy will cost around £30-£40 or £15ish online. and there is some GREAT free recovery software out there. let us know how you are going to proceed. regards danzil
  13. hi ok so if you reboot you obtain an IP correct? have you tried setting a manual IP. do this by going into the properties of your Wireless card control panel>network connections> click TCP/IP then properties tick use the following IP use some thing like 192.168.1.2 subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 default gateway = 192.168.1.254 dns same as default gateway. this will work on that router,,,but if you connect to another router or access point you may have to tick obtan automatically hope that makes sense. regards danzil
  14. hi no you would not lose any data. you would just be running an intergrity check on your hard drive..,and at worst a repair install. do you have a CD then? regards danzil :)
  15. Hi I agree the symptons sound like your cmos battery has failed. pop to a computer shop and buy a new one..they only cost roughly £3..and are very simple to fit. look on your motherboard (usally near the front panel wiring) anf you will find the round battery (looks like an oversized watch battery). just remove it, pop your new one in. go into your bios setup your time and your done. or just reboot and set your time in windows regards danzil
  16. hi can you give us a list of the instructions you got sent. as for the ebook pdf should be fine. does your webserver support PHP is it linux based or windows based.. the php file maybe on your server and inaccessible (some hosting companys do this) or the settings.php file maybe in the programme itself. without see-ing the instructions you got sent i can not help any further regards danzil
  17. hi do as suggested by RandyL run all the relevant tools he posted,(updated of course). you may want to check in "msconfig" just in case it is set to run at startup. that will give us more idea what you are infected with. check in the service's tabs (hide MS services first) and in startup.. if there is anything there that you do not know, please post the name here and its location. regards danzil
  18. Do you know for sure that your hard drive is SATA and not IDE. if it is sata what else do yo have connected via sata, same if it is IDE. maybe worth changing the cables... seems strange both primary and secondary are unknown.. regards danzil
  19. hi please try the following download Qfecheck.exe verifies the installation of Windows 2000 and Windows XP hotfixes this will let us know what hotfixes have installed and what has not.that is the start reading through some items on technet, there have been others with this issue. they have fixed this by going into add n remove programmes, and removing "Windows Installer 3.1" then running windows updates again. also some user have fixed this by removing service pack 3 then again running windows updates. obviously re-install sp3 afterwards give them a try and post back. I will sort this damn update...lol regards danzil
  20. hi depending on what laptop you have the password can be removed, if it is a bios password. we need to know if you can get into the bios at all. that way we can tell if it is a hard drive or bios password.. try tapping the "DELETE" key and/or F2 at the post regards danzil
  21. hi do you have your windows xp cd to hand.... can you boro a friend xp cd, can be xp home or pro doesnt matter. need to get into recovery console. post back if you can get a CD regards danzil read this How to create a bootable floppy disk for an NTFS or FAT partition in Windows XP this could help too

  23. Hi i had this issue a couple of weeks ago. it was just a fault in the mouse itself. have you tried another mouse regards danzil
  24. hi have you checked all your bios settings. try loading fail safe defaults, may also be called default bios settings. make sure your SATA controller is on in the bios too, that is if you are using a SATA drive. as for the aux light being on all the time, do you mean the power on light on the case, or an LED on the motherboard itself. if it is the front power light then it maybe a PSU issue, could also be an issue with the front panel wiring and/or a motherboard fault. try the bios settings first, we can then look at the light issue after regards danzil
  25. hi can you tap f8 continously at startup to get to the boot options. then choose "disable restart on system failure" i think thats the correct wording. now reboot. this will stop your machine rebooting..hopefully you will then get an error code, something like 0x0000000??? post that error here we can then determine what the problem is. can you obtain an XP cd from a friend (for recovery console purposes only). regards danzil ps, if you have a floppy drive you maybe able to download a boot disk.that way we can run some tests
