  4. hi [boot Loader] Timeout=5 Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT [Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup" you need to remove this line C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup" you will have to be in safe mode to save the changes....tap f8 at startup and choose safe mode... delete the line above then restart all should now be ok. post back if not.... regards danzil
  5. hi have a look at this You receive a "Stop 0x0000000A" error message in Windows XP look up the part regarding memory mismatches etc. i agree the most likely cause is going to be bad RAM how many sticks do you have installed. if you have more then one, try removing one and retesting, if no good pop it back in and remove the other one. try to determine which stick is bad regards danzil
  6. i have picked each of these options many times and each time the computer will take me back to this black screen. so safe mode is not an options.... do you have an XP cd so we can get into recovery console... regards danzil
  7. hi i think the install has editted your boot.ini file. can you post the contents of the file.so i can be certain what you can remove. the boot.ini is in the root of your system drive..usually your C: drive..you may have to show protected operating system files...this is in tools>folder options. please make sre you do not edit this your self accidently, this may make your PC unbootable. regards danzil
  8. hi at startup means when your pc is at POST, basically when you see your machine counting your ram and system drives etc.....if that is not working then the only other thing to do is: do a normal boot into windows then go to start>run type in (without quotes)"msconfig" now go to the "boot.ini"tab click on "/SAFEBOOT" now click ok.and click on restart. when the pc restarts this should take you into safe mode. rename that file as instructions above, go back into "msconfig" and remove the "SAFEBOOT" option.. restart and that will hopefully be it. post back if not regards danzil
  9. hi set the router backup so the vista machine can connect to it. on the xp machine go into the wlan device properties and remove your old connection from it. it may still be trying to use your old key. now when you browse you should be able to see the connection, and it should prompt for your wireless key. regards danzil

  13. hi you may want to try cleaning the CPU heatsink and fan. this may be clogged with dust etc. you may have to remove the heatsink though, this can be done by removing a few screws, alternativly a can of compressed air may zap it away, but beware you will end up pushing the dust else where. if you remove the heatsink you may want to change the thermal paste to, if it is old an dry. try checking "event viewer" as well to see if anything stands out start>right click "my computer">manage>event viewer>system check for red entries regards danzil
  14. To left4dead. That is good advice, but the best way is to "go into msconfig"...then disable "NON" microsoft service, some service you need for system stability etc. the startup tab you can pretty much disable all....temporary because this may knock of your anti virus also. regards danzil
  15. hi any luck yet mate regards danzil
  16. HI When the computer blue screens, are you recieving any error codes, looks like 0x0000??? can you note the code and post it back. if the screen goes to quick and reboots, tap f8 at startup and choose "disable auto restart on system failure", regards danzil what cd do you have that has anti virus on it

  18. hi have you tried botting into safe mode,,, tapping f8 at startup...then choose top option "safe mode" then log in as administrator. browse to c:\windows locate the folder called "softwaredistribution" right click it then click on rename....add .old to the end of the name. should appear as softwaredistribution.old. restart and log on as normal...see if this removes the need for installing the update. may not work but surely is worth a try, this will not effect any other updates previous or in the future. regards danzil
