Freshly cooked computer, anyone?
danzil replied to Kinemortophobia's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
do you have a spare power supply laying around. take the pc apart and put it all together on a flat clean surface,,,,, clean it all before obviously, i use a clean soft painting bush and some compressed air....... then wire up a power button or you could alternativly use a electric screwdriver to breifly touch the power-on conncetions together. you may be in luck and some components may work. i have had numerous dusty blown pc's sent to me and into my workshop and all it has been is the power supply. like the other guys said it may just be bad luck and the lot is gone. if you take my advise please be carefully an earth yourself,,,an antistatic wrist strap would help,, there about £4 hope that helps. regards danzil ps will have to dig some photos out,,,,,got some pics of pc's that are so dusty fans dont turn and you cant even make out the board form factor......nasty...not good when your allergic to dust. -

Best way to copying a hard drive
danzil replied to dan m's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
if the hard drive is either from a pc or a laptop then you can not just swap or even clone the drive, then put it back in and hope it works. the system will be different and it will blue screen and loop.unless same model of pc and hardware etc. then licensing may become an issue your best bet is to slave the orignal drive (usb caddy maybe handy) then just copy the data from, "my docs" "favourites" etc etc.simply drag n drog or move that way your system will be a fresh install and just the data needed will be put back on. cleanest and best bet in my view regards danzil -
hi there have you ran anti virus / malware scans on your machine. have you checked for a self replicating virus / worm. do you know what it i sfilling up with for example...tons of empty text files or jargon filled files....maybe worth monitoring that, that may help pin point the issue..... what i would try is backing the whole drive up to a spare. then scanning and cleaning the drive, then running ccleaner AGAIN, then run defraggler (Defraggler - Defragment your files!) just on that drive. that is my method may work may not.......is there anything at all in event veiwer regarding your drive or controller errors etc. regards danzil
-
hi did your friend use a prog built into xp called"desktop cleanup wizard" if so you can runt that and simply drag the icons back onto the desktop. please post back if not and we will see if we can help more regards danzil

some new viruses are aware of malware bytes, superantispyware and other removal tools.. try renaming the exe (installation programme to mbam.bat. then see if it will install. if it does install you will have to rename the startup of the program too to .bat or .com. see if that helps. also try download smitfraudfix and run that in safe mode. regards danzil

192.168.1.1 as suggested will not work, go to start then run see if you can ping 192.168.2.0 then try 2.1 and even 2.254 what ever one you get a reply from is most likely your router>modem. or try ipconfig /all note down the default gateway and try that in your browser web based configuration maybe turned of and you may have to do it through telnet. what is the make of box you are using is there any model etc on it. can i ask why you need to hard code an ip address into your settings. to clarify the 192.168.2.???? is your ip address the router>modem will give you via dhcp (this wil lbe your private ip address) the other ip you gave which was 24.215.x.x qill be the ip address your router>modem will have once connected to your isp gateway. regards danzil

slipstreaming basically means . you get your xp cd copy the contents to a folder on your pc.....download all your latest windows updates, download all your drivers for your laptop>pc. then load up nlite (the programme i linked) then it will basically ask you where teh xp cd folder is, where your service packs are (will download via windows updatets), where all your critical updates are. then it will go through a process of adding the settings YOU want. you can set it up to be exactly how you need, so once it has installed you will not need to do much at all. it will even out whatever icons you want on your deskstop for you.. to downlaod all the updates to your pc use a small programme called. windows update downloader, get it from Windows Updates Downloader (WUD). then download the update list (ul) fromt here site that matches your xp cd,,, xp, xp with service pack2 etc.......you will then get an option to download what you need, you can tick and untick what updates you need and do not, for instance you can now integrate IE7 and media player 11, if you do not want them untick them......very very simple. regards danzil ps if you need any help making your slipstreamed cd let me know.

have you tried running ie7 with no add ons, start>all progs>accesories>system tools>internet explorer (no addons). give that a try. have you also tried resetting ie back to factory defaults....go to internet options>advanced>reset. what is the error you get with the send error report...it will say fault in ????? can you post the error log. was the fault there before installing firefox, maybe you merge your ie settings into firefox thus giving firefox the same issues. i would first try and uninstall all browser, chrome, firefox etc. then run a system file checker. to do this goto start>run then type in "sfc /scannow" minus the qoutes, you may need your xp cd. this will replace any missing or corrupt systme files. if that does not work then re-install ie6 then see if that works (ie6 is was came standard with windows xp). then i would upgrade to ie7 if ie6 was working. to re-install ie6 you will need your xp cd.or i can upload the needed files and a script to re-install it.(if you do not have the cd) if you have your xp cd pop it in your drive then goto start>run type in (without the qoutes maybe better to copy and paste lol)"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf" then when prompted for the files browse to your cd drive then the i386 directory, this will then find the first file, xp will remember the location and install the rest for you. reboot then retry windows. this way we will no for sure that it is not an installation issue or something similar. try that then post back. regards danzil

does your print server have extendable (spelling i know ) aerials. if so by some bi-directional antenna's. or trey home plugs...you can run ethernet, USB, and other usefull stuff through your wall socket (uk wall soket>plug socket on your wall). maybe worth a quick look regards danzil

download these tools then run them. CCleaner - Home this will remove any temporary directorys and other random crap not needed. run disk cleanup after start>all programmes>Accessories>systemtools>disk clean up. then run defraggler Defraggler - Defragment your files! see if that helps. do so after running all freepchelp scanning software ie malware bytes etc. regards danzil
-
you could use nlite (nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation) slipstream your xp with all the drivers and service packs>updates etc then install that. use your sd to save pictures>documents etc too.... xp WILL run off an sd card>USB pen so you could that that if needs be. regards danzil

PC Guard not loading on Vergin Media
danzil replied to RICK144's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
is there anything obvious in your event viewer. right "my computer" then click on "manage". then click on the plus sign next event viewer. read any red "error"s and post them back....may be worth a look. have you ran an online anti virus check.Free ESET Online Antivirus Scanner try running through all malware scans, spyware scan, adware scans etc. regards danzil -
that power supply will still fit, just make sure you line it up correctly when connecting it. if my memory servers me correctly you will need to plug the connecter into the left hand side, thus leaving four pins on the right..... have you tried reseating your memory, and also clearing your cmos, (remove the lithium battery on the board for ten minutes), regards danzil ps post back if that does/not work.

does your motherboard have intregrated graphics. if so remove the additional graphics card then try using on board to see if that works. if so re-install the additional graphics card. also make sure your GeForce FX5500 does not need additional power, there may be a 4 or a 6 pin connector on the card, and sometimes a standard molex connecter on the card (molex-standard cable). also try resetting the bios, remove the cmos battery for 20 minutes then pop it back in and retry... have you also tried different memory (if integrated graphics work then ignore memory change). is there any chance the motherboard is shorting on the case. regards danzil

XP pro. Problems after installing RAM
danzil replied to silverkaylah's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
hi a little gentle advice to you, when putting your hands inside your computer ALWAYS make sure you either use an anti static wrist strap or at least hold one hand on the power supply unit to earth yourself. you MAY have damaged both ram chips by handling them. the stop message you are recieving could be hard drive issues . try booting into safe mode then go to start>run type in "cmd" without ". n the black dos screen type in "chkdsk /f /r" again without ". the computer will ask you to press "y" do so. now reboot your pc and power it back on as normal. your pc will then scan your hard drive for errors and attempt to fix them. might be worth getting a cold beer or a cup of tea, it could take a while depending on the size of the drive. may also be worth going into your bios, tap f2 and delete one after each other, once in the bios choose "load setup defaults" (may differ but not greatly). restart and try again... do the chkdsk part first. regards danzil -
alternativly you can download unlocker, ,this will allow used progs etc to be removed when they are in use... get it here. UNLOCKER 1.8.7 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB install it then right click the icon, then choose unlocker....and oila regards danzil

this all depends on the size of your usb pen,,,,,,,, yes you can make the usb pen bootable but it needs to pick up on the xp setup.. if you know how to do this then excellent if not try this link Installing Windows XP from a USB pen | Sentire.co.uk have fun i have done this before, just take your time, nothing like wasting 45 minutes to realise you missed a step and the usb pen doesnt boot. ALSO MAKE SURE your first boot device is "removable device" (as you stated) or USB HDD if that is an option. regards danzil

sorry i read that as the "cd was broken" not the drive... yes as wolfey said the best bet would be to replace the drive. or if you have your xp cd, i can guide you through setting up the install via your adapter.(jsut to get an OS on the drive but yes replace the drive otherwise your gonna have issue with installing other software etc... regards danzil
-
In the bios under advanced setup you will have an option to choose 1st 2nd 3rd boot device..change the first device to cd. this may be no use to you though, without your OS CD you can not re-install wndows.... do you have your unique COA license key, if so i am sure it is not illegal to lend a cd from a friend,,, JUST MAKE SURE YOU USE YOUR KEY. otherwise you will be breaking the law and you just might not pass WGA. first thing first though check your first boot device. DO NOT DOWNLOAD any version of XP from torrents or warez, the majority of the time they are loaded with junk and trojans and all other crud like that. alternativly buy a new OS they are know more then £70 now a days. regards danzil let me know if i can help out more.
