When you booted from your XP Pro OEM I assume you mean that you installed the Recovery Console and booted to that. Is that correct?
Have you tried the Recovery Console from here?

To be honest it sounds like a Windows update has caused a problem. You might want to try a System Restore using the Recovery Console to before this happened.
From the Todd and Tyler Radio Empires audio vault you can download the South Park Obama Ringtone for your phone or just use it to screw with your friends.

It sounds like your flash player is corrupted. Run the uninstaller.
Reboot.
Then download and save the stand alone installer ,Version 10 is the latest, before running it.
Reboot.
It could also be the Shockwave player but try this first.

How is the support?
Is there any online chat support or email support that's free?
In my opinion if you're going for a name brand computer then free support options should be a must.
FAQ's, Trouble Shooting and Forums are OK but to me that says "Well here is what we have. If you need more contact us for a price".
I know you asked about quality and I can't answer that. But it does seem to me if it is quality any good company would stand behind it.
Like I said I don't know ASUS though.

As Goku said it could be a Windows update that caused it. You might have it set to automatically install updates.
I see a lot of probable other causes from Norton to drivers to memory.
Can you check your memory by swapping it out or removing one stick at a time?

jell as I said before the three most probable causes of a slow booting computer are a failing hard drive, a malware infection or too many startup items.
35 processes is an extremely low amount. A 1 minute boot time is not abnormal even for your system specs depending what is loading at startup.
You should still do as I suggested in post #10 to help rule out a failing hard drive since you said this started happening over the course of a few months.
Under no circumstance should you go about manually deleting files and folders unless you are absolutely certain you know what you are doing. This could cause programs not to work or even cause you not to be able to uninstall programs properly.
Besides there would be no benefit and deleteing hidden files can completely render your computer useless. Microsoft hides many of their files for just that reason.
If your computer boots in 1 minute and it isn't slow doing anything else run the chkdsk. If it passes then you're probably ok.
Kam what do you mean by that? By standard do you mean a full retail XP Pro version that you purchased? Is it SP1, SP2 or SP3? Have you used it on another computer?
Have you inquired with Acer to see if they will supply the proper disks for this laptop? I see it supports both Vista and XP. The disks from Acer would supply the needed software and drivers as well as set up any recovery partitions that you have now probably deleted.
LOL Mara. Spam wasn't looked down at in war torn Europe once upon a time.
LOL bee. A fine plate. My arteries are clogging as I look. But that's what I eat.
Just a thought here. Exactly where was the file located when it was found?
During or after the scan was a file path listed as to where the infection was located?
The reason I ask is that I have seen Trojans being picked up by scanners that were in the System Restore files. If so then turning System Restore off and turning it back on will purge those files. Be informed though that you will lose all your previous restore points.
Not knowing Aviras Antivir antivirus program all that well I also wonder if it's scanning it's own quarantined files and picking it up on the scans from there.
Let us know what directory the infection was found in please.
Hi Cass;
Without knowing what you removed or how you removed the items and knowing more about your system it's hard to offer a definite fix at this time.
Have you tried to do a System Restore to before you had this problem?
If that works we can instruct you on a proper cleanup method.
