  1. Thank you too Dean. It means a lot to us to hear those words. I'll have that drink. :)
  2. You are right that at first glance it seems to be a heat issue. There is probably not a sure fire solution to anything but check back to see what others think. We have a hardware expert so be patient please.
  3. That's fantastic sappers. We're really happy for you. Maybe next time you'll be the one helping. Good luck and happy computing.
  4. Please read rules 3 and 4. Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources there is a high probability that you will be infested with malware. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation. References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: Malware: Help prevent the Infection IM And P2P Malware Threats Nearly Triple - Technology News by TechWeb How to Prevent Online Invation of Spyware, Adware and Malware We would recommend that you uninstall these P2P programs, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so in the Control Panel via Add/Remove Programs. If you have Vista it's Programs and Features. However in order for us to provide future assistance on this matter you must remove the P2P first as it would be fruitless unless the possible cause is ruled out first and to prevent future infestations. Nik back up all your data because sooner or later you will need to reinstall if you continue down this road. If you choose to continue fixing this we can assist you in removing all the illegal software and files.
  5. I suspect a Winsock problem caused by the infection. If you can get on the net via safe mode with networking then we can try to eliminate all infections first before doing a repair.
  6. What brand of mouse is this? You say it has software that goes with it. Uninstall the software for the mouse, remove the drivers from device manager and reboot. Windows is obviously picking up the mouse with generic Windows drivers as it works in safe mode.
  7. Hi motown; Have a quick look at Microsofts Help and Support Unmountable Boot Volume.
  8. Hi Kelly; Try it now. It should work.
  9. How do I extract an archive with WinAce?
  10. Obtaining a Recovery CD or DVD set
  11. I think I found it.
  12. I'm a little confused here shrimply. But I'll try to answer your first 2 paragraphs first. If you uninstall the single license Sudent version of Office from your first PC first it should be perfectly legal to install it on a second PC. Also these versions in the US allow it to be installed on more then one computer with the same license since Microsoft knows that students have computers at school, home etc. Ask your school about this. They give you this discounted version while in school hopeing you will keep their product once you graduate. So you may be able to run it on more then one computer. So now you have a different version of office you bought too. Office versions will be incompatable. It's not wise to try to run one program against another. There are bound to be conflicts as the programs are integrated. Only run one version of any Office program at a time. So if you have Office 2000 full don't try to install and run a later version of Publisher along side it. As for your last part I'm confused. Exactly what are you downloading.
  13. OK there are are 76 SR1000 series. Which one is yours?
  14. Yes darrell it should say something after Presario. There are many different model numbers of Presario. 5000US was just an example.
  15. OK it's a Presario. It should also say something like 5000 US although that won't be yours. Also is this a desktop or laptop? The worst case is all your files and programs are gone and since you didn't create the recovery cd's and since the recovery obviously isn't right you might or might not have a hard drive that is also going bad. It might be possible or might not to obtain the cd's and replace the drive if that is the case. Otherwise it's a matter of replacing the drive and buying XP. For now please provide the rest of the Compaq model information.
  16. Hi darrell; This doesn't sound good at all. To begin with the update may have been malware and not a legit Windows update. Thus the beginning of your woes. Secondly it appears you have run the compaq recovery program. With compaq and hp computers the only option is a destructive recovery most of the time. This would cause a loss of all data and all software would need to be reinstalled again. Of course this doesn't explain why you can see the files, access some and why shortcut icons still exist. The hard drive size is not a major problem but everything else is. Like you said it's a real mess. What is the exact make and model of this compaq? Perhaps the manual will give us your options. Be prepared for the worst though.
  17. Either way you look at it if your home page or search engine is changing after you set them correctly you have a Trojan infection. Follow our guide to clean your system then reset your options. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup StepsDisable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one. Please follow the instructions here How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows Vista
  18. Are you saying your home page is reverting to something else or not staying what you set it as?
  19. Either way it's the same thing. You need to correctly set the defaults. In IE Options>Search>Settings-Click on Find more providers and follow the same steps as I said.
  20. It seems you have not set the default search for IE7 correctly. Therefore you are reverting in the next session. Instead of clicking on Find More Providers click on Change Search Defaults. Is Google listed there? If so click Set Default. Click OK. Or follow the next steps if that doesn't work. Click on Find More Providers. Carefully follow all the steps in the yellow box. Don't take any shortcuts. Steps 1-5 are extremely important. They have to be followed exactly. Please read them carefully. Notice step 2 there. You have to type in TEST in Google in another window then copy that url to the field. You can't just type in (www. google.com) Make sure you click Install when done.
  21. Since XP Pro can encrypt files I hope you didn't do that. However if you didn't do that then you probably just need to take ownership of the files and folders so you can access them.
  22. Hi sappers; Good to have you here. Hopefully we can all help each other.
  23. This indicates that something is blocking access. What's different between your two computers. Any security programs, the way you access the intenet etc. You should reinstall IE7 and try the patch but something doesn't match up.
  24. This might be an authentication issue. A lot of people have had this after upgrading to IE7. Try the Microsoft patch.
  25. Hi scotty; Recreating the account usually works so that is strange. The anti-malware programs would not have caused issues. So they found nothing? What effects are you experiencing? It's been a while since I used OE but I was hoping for an error message once it failed to logon. In any case I'll research this some more.
