What do you mean there was "nothing there" in Device Manager? Does Device Manager not show anything? What was the virus you had? What do you mean by a full system restore? Do you mean you reinstalled Windows? Or did you do a System Restore? We are just trying to get some more info driven.

I think Dalo is correct too. It has all the signs of the Drive failing. Although rare I've seen drives give out in less then a year. Seth suggested regular checking of the drive too so he may suspect the same. Either way this is a good time to make sure you have all your data backed up.

Dave makes a valid point that this program should be used with caution just like editing the registry which is also an option should be used with caution. Basically that's what TweakUI does is make registry changes. Using it for removing add/remove program entries is safe enough but stay away from the features you don't understand. For example prior to the XP version TweakUI installed to and had to be run from the Control Panel. Unfortunately for many people TweakUI has the ability to hide the Control Panel. The problem with that was once someone had used TweakUI to hide the Control Panel they couldn't use TweakUI to unhide it as they couldn't run it without access to the Control Panel. The registry had to modified manually to unhide the Control Panel. As always use extreme caution with any program that deals with the registry. And don't use the features you don't have complete understanding of.

You're right there is always a way. Remove the keys under Uninstall in the registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall It's a good idea to backup the registry first especially if you're unfamiliar with it. A safer way is to use TweakUI from Microsoft.

Hi tabby; I think you misunderstood Wolfey. He was refering to the fact that it might be a recovery CD rather then a full version. Windows can be reinstalled with a recovery CD but it lacks certain repair options like the Recovery Console. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

I would rename them rather then delete them but only if you're sure they are related to lexmark. Just add old to the end of the name but before the file type extension.

If your desktop shows but the icons are gone right click the desktop and go to view. Click Show Desktop Icons.

In all probability the hard drive is going out. To be safe you should backup everything now before doing anything else.

I agree with Seth that at least one of these programs will identify the needed information in most cases. It is worth trying in almost all cases. Between the lot of the programs one might identify the needed information. Short of that one might need to pull the case and get into the guts if the manufacturer does not supply the info.

Look in Device Manager to see if it is listed as to the type. If not try a program to see if you can tell us what it is. SIW PC Wizard Belarc Advisor Everest AIDA32 This is most likely a case of just needing the right drivers since you did a fresh install of Windows. Download the programs to another computer and burn to disk. Install them to your computer from the disk. Let us know.
