I agree with many of your points Mart but disagree with some too. But that's ok. That's the point of this thread. Invalid registry items in themselves pose no issue unless the PC is experiencing a problem. It's not like they take any space on the drive. I have tested cleaners that produced false positives. Most in fact. Had I removed them all valid programs and even Windows itself would have been corrupted at times. No the registry is not to be feared but one should always know what they are doing first and always make a backup of it first just in case. And yes knowledge is power so research first as you said. But to just run a reg cleaner and dump everything it finds is an invitation to trouble as I know you agree. For these reasons we try to find an alternative to editing the registry when offering advice but of course this is not always possible. As for myself I've found editing it manually quite helpful to customize my PC and programs at times. The bottom line is back it up first and never trust a cleaner unless you know what you are doing. Nice post Mart.

A big hello to all in the forum
RandyL replied to Martman46's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Mart; Thankyou for your very kind words. If you have any problems please post. We would appreciate any help you can give too. Good to have you here. -
We're glad you got it fixed cwaddell and thanks for letting us know. The information will be useful. To clarify you said in another thread that you reinstalled first and still had problems until you removed the battery. Given the nature of the different issues the reinstall was still a good idea. A real pain I know. Your data is now backed up and you are upgrading your security. These are both good things to do. If you can create the recovery disks please do so just in case. Once again thanks for taking the time to let us know.

Acer Aspire 5670 series erecovery pdf file direct link. The site is slow or down a lot so the link may not work at times.
-
As usuall I can't access the Acer support site again. This is their site not me. I do have a 5670 pdf file on hand however. It does seem that it's capable to create the restore cd's and you said you did but can't find them. This is usually a one shot deal and you can't create them twice. As you have created them you might be out of luck. I don't know if safe mode can create cd's but I doubt it. On the off chance you can this is taken from the manual. Create factory default image CD When the System CD and Recovery CD are not available, you can create them by using this feature. 1 Boot to Windows XP. 2 Press <Alt> + <F10> to open the Acer eRecovery Management utility. 3 Enter the password to proceed. The default password is six zeros. 4 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select Recovery settings and click Next. 5 In the Recovery settings window, select Burn image to disk and click Next. 6 In the Burn image to disk window, select 1. Factory default image or 2. Application CD and click Next. 7 Follow the instructions on screen to complete the process. Personally though I think your hard drive is going out given the amount of time it took to get into safe mode. Since you have your data backed up you should consider getting a new computer or contacting Acer on replacing the drive.

Defragmenter space requirement
RandyL replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Shrimply it can be forced to run but please don't attempt it. Also don't run a third party utility to do this. Serious damage may result from both options. Consider other options instead like extending your partition sizes. -
No sound in Windows Movie Maker
RandyL replied to jace2920's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Sorry jace but that's analog not digital. A digital recorder will typically record to a card or a mini dvd or an internal hard drive and not a cassette. Any of the VHS formats are analog. As such WMM won't work to import the movies. WMM only supports importing from a device that stores the information in a digital format not an analog format. -
Searches redirected and slow
RandyL replied to mooster1123's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi mooster; Carefully follow all the instructions here. It will take some time but it's well worth it. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup StepsDisable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicroâ„¢ HijackThisâ„¢ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/printer-selection.gif ____________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2)Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 2 Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware. You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected". http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/atf-cleaner02.gif __________________________________________________ STEP 3 Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. __________________________________________________ STEP 4 Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes - (direct download) Accept all defaults for the installer Allow the program to update the definitions Click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 5 Run an online scan with ESET from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you must first start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator" from the popup context menu. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computer __________________________________________________ Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted. If required this is the download link for TrendMicroâ„¢ HijackThisâ„¢ Unless instructed to by the Technician helping you then do not download this tool. Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one. Please follow the instructions here How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows Vista -
I'm not familiar with that one. You may need to find out what Bios you have as this appears to be an off brand computer. Check out some BIOS options and see if they might work. Keep in mind that pressing or tapping the keys can be tricky and the timing at boot up is important. Usually you will see an option at bootup to enter setup. This would be the correct key.
-
Sorry driven but I need the make and model not the Operating System. Is it a Dell, HP etc. Sorry about the confusion.
-
What is the make of your computer? It might take a different key or series of keys to access the BIOS.
-
As usuall the Acer support site is experiencing problems at the moment so I can't check the manuals at the moment. Typical for Acer. It does appear that the the Aspire 5670 series has the eRecovery option which means you need to reinstall using that option not the CD's if you can't find them. Keep in mind that the CD's have to be the ones for reinstalling Windows not ones for installing drivers and such. However I can't supply the steps at this time or verify that as Acer downloads aren't working at the moment. Again. Guides and Manuals should give you some recovery options when they can be accessed. Sorry for the Acer delay.

No sound in Windows Movie Maker
RandyL replied to jace2920's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
The cables you are using to connect your camcorder seems to indicate that it is analog not digital. WMM can't import from an analog device. You would need to use different software such as you did with SonicMyDVD. This often produces the no sound issue. To connect a digital device and import to WMM you need to connect via IEEE 13944 connection or a USB 2.0. -
PC making strange Beeping/Error sounds
RandyL replied to BrekkyDJ's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
It sounds like a cricket chirping. Do you have Weatherbug installed? -
Hi mooster; Welcome. Hopefully you'll find what you need here.
-
I think seths avice should be followed. Backup and reinstall. So many problems that the OS is probably corrupt. Possibly due to a failing drive but it does work in safe mode so hopefully it isn't the drive. Fixing just some of the problems is a complete waste of effort. I doubt that it can even be done but if one was to attempt it it would be all or nothing. No offence but you haven't even followed the advice to remove P2P and remove two of the three Antivirus programs you have. That's a simple thing to do. It would get extremely complicated after that. Please do yourself a favor and cut your losses by following seths advice.

Defragmentation Tools and Methods
RandyL replied to AdvancedSetup's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I fail to see the benefits of a third party defrag program with Vista or XP when the Windows one will work fine and is safe for all users regardless of their skills. Defrag is not as essential these days. In the 98 days it was but like mentioned so was the problems of other defrag programs. Of course disk checking should always be done first. What's the point of writing files to a bad sector? For the average user Windows works rather well in my opinion. Remember this thread on defragmenting? -

This sounds like a "Monday Madness" post. -
That shows your C drive which is what Windows is installed on and your optical drive DVD/CD. If you have a USB device plugged in it's not showing. Disconnect all USb Devices. Right click "My Computer" and select "Properties". Click "Device Manager". Click on the + signs to expand them. Under USB (Universal Serial Bus) right click the "Controllers" and select to remove. Reboot to reinstall the USB controllers.
-
If USB devices are not being detected go to Device Manager and remove the USB controllers and reboot. They should be detected and reinstalled.
