  1. Jim I'm confused about your post. You said you only installed a few basic programs such as the ones you listed. But then you asked about what services to disable and listed P2P. As you well know from one of your previous threads we will not help you with this problem as long as you continue to install these programs. There is a high probability that this is once again the cause and why you once again needed to reinstall. If you need assistance on removing these programs we would be glad to help. I suggest you backup regularly and keep your Vista disk handy. Your AV is not a good one and your habits continue to be poor.
  2. Yes maynard, navigating the settings in Vista mail is the same as Outlook Express.
  3. Hi russ; Dave is right in that we have covered every possibility. I would suggest that you contact the vendor you bought your computer and Office from. I suspect that the hybrid installation is due to them. OEM suppliers have a disk with multiple versions of Office that they can use to install one version. Then you or the vendor purchase the license for that one version. If they sold you a copy of that disk or did not supply you with the licence then I would suspect foul play or miscommunication with them. As noted trial versions of Office are common but for a limited time. It seems to me that this is something you really need to take up with them. Getting updates for an unlicensed Microsoft product seems to be the issue. For these reasons I'm going to close the thread for now. Feel free to ask about anything else please. This thread has been closed.
  4. Thanks for verifying the installation procedure Seth. Samsung support is really poor. However if zism's RAM specs are correct he definitely needs to upgrade even if the reinstallation helps.
  5. Your best bet is to upgrade your memory and see if that helps. If it does not I suggest to reinstall Vista. Go to the Samsung folder in your All Programs menu and see if you have the option to create a set of DVD's to reinstall Vista. If not try and press F4 at the BIOS screen to launch the recovery solution. If that works choose a complete recovery not basic. IMPORTANT: Backup all your files, bookmarks etc. first as all data will be lost.
  6. Pardon me but I think after 98 posts we need to rehash this again and rethink it. 1. First of all zism you were advised to uninstall your torrent programs and you have not done so. 2. It was suggested by Kelly and me that PCGuard (Radial Point Software) could be the issue and should be temporarily uninstalled and you have not done so. 3. You were asked if your XP disks were OEM or the full version of XP. You did not anser that question. 4. Either way it seems you do not have the key for XP. If it was the retail version it would be with the disks not on your Vista laptop which shipped with Vista. 5. Downgrading to XP on a machine that shipped with Vista is not a good idea anyway. The hardware you have may not have XP drivers. 6. Your system specs especially memory (RAM) is not good for Vista Home Premium. You need more. Upgrade your RAM or have a shop do it for you. It's not expensive. 7. Instead of trying to downgrade Vista to XP I suggest upgrading your RAM to what Vista needs. 8. After upgrading your RAM reinstall Vista if need be. This will cause all programs you installed to be gone. Your machine should then run fine. 9. Reinstall your programs one by one. Then you will find the issue if you have not already figured it out by following the top steps. 10. These steps should make it clear to everyone I hope.
  7. I told my wife that joke. Long story short. I'm sleeping in the garage now.
  8. Hi grey; May I ask how you managed to uninstall WMP11 in Vista? WMP11 is the only version that will work in Vista and is integrated with Vista. I know of no way to uninstall it in Vista. If you have somehow managed to uninstall WMP11 you may need to perform a repair or reinstall of Vista to repair WMP11. I understand that other players don't work right too but this may be a root issue. Or do you mean you removed the files that played in the different players but did not actually remove the other players? If so go to the Control Panel>Programs and Features and uninstall any other media players you may have. Reboot.
  9. Slow down guys. centurion has Outlook Express not Outlook which is part of Office. Reread my posts. Free Hotmail support for Outlook Express has been discontinued. You can no longer use Outlook Express with the Free Hotmail. Very old accounts were grandfathered but even those are now being discontinued. The hotmail accounts can still be used by accessing them on the web or Outlook but not Outlook Express.
  10. Your friend may be using hotmail but he's using the web based mail. Vista does not support Outlook Express. Vista uses Windows Mail as an email client. And hotmail flat out will not work with Windows Mail. As I've said centurion I believe hotmail has discontinued support for your account to be used with the email client Outlook Express. You can still logon to your hotmail account on the web to send and recieve mail. This is the case with every user not just you.
  11. Hi centurion; If I understand right you're using Outlook Express to send and receive mail from your hotmail account. Hotmail free has quit allowing the use of Outlook Express years ago. They did allow some of the older accounts to keep using it but did say that eventually they would not even allow those. I used it with OE up until 18 months ago when I switched to Vista which does not support OE. I doubt that my Hotmail would still work with OE anymore though. Lately they have been cutting off access to even the old accounts. If this is the case I fear your number has come up.
  12. Hi Grey; Make sure you have all your Windows updates and remove all media players. Except WMP of course. There might be a conflict.
  13. Thankyou for your very detailed reply Mara. I'm sure it will benefit others. This thread appears to be solved and is now closed If you are the original poster of this thread and need it re-opened, then please PM (Private Message) an Administrator or Moderator
  14. Sorry Rowal I gave you the wrong link. It should have been this one. Version: 5.10.0.5282 is the original driver and HP does not have an update for it. Please be patient. I'm sure the techs will be back soon.
  15. I don't know about XP Pro but in Vista Home Premium (Standard account) I can't even update flash players. It seems to be extremely restricted. With XP Pro you have more options then XP or Vista Home Premium on setting policies. I'll let the experts elaborate more but again it's not a one click option.
  16. Hi rowal; Out of curiosity did you try to update the drivers from HP?
  17. Hi Mara; For the benefit of other members can you please explain what reinstall method worked for you? I assume the reinstall was from the hard drive and not the disks since you mentioned F10 but I'm not sure. We really would like to know too since we may encounter this problem again. Thanks.
  18. Just another reason to be afraid of how maynard thinks. Good one. :p
  19. Your model can be found by inputting VGC-RB52 Use option 2 in support. Since your system is so corrupted you may need to use the disks to reinstall before you boot into Windows. Open the PDF file. Now save it to disk for safe keeping. Scroll down and look at To perform a complete hard disk drive recovery To recover drive C Print that or or print the entire pdf file so you can follow the instructions. I think the first option will be your best bet.
  20. Mara there is every reason to believe your system is still infected. AVG Free is not good enough for protection and even worse on removal of Trojans. If you want you can follow our complete guide on Malware removal.
  21. The above REGEDIT4 is a file that would disable downloads using IE. It would not disable downloads using a different browser. Furthur after copying to NotePad it would have to be saved with a .reg file extension. The other problem with it is that should you choose to undo it you would need another regedit file. Of course you could also navigate the registry manually to change the value data. Change the dword to 00000003 to disable downloads. Put the 3 back to 0 to enable downloads. Do not edit the registry if you are unfamiliar with it unless you have created a backup.
  22. I think they say nview_info Dave.
  23. I would be happy for a week. :D
  24. If I drank that much wine it would look like me. :p
  25. Hi Mara; If you decide to reinstall XP from the disks you created you should have no problems. The disks are bootable and will run before you boot into Windows as long as the BIOS are set to boot from the disk drive first. This is not the same as Auto Play. Auto Play runs from Windows and depending on what you chose as the defaults for file types it will open accordingly. Auto Play can even be disabled. Of course backup everything before you reinstall. Seth has a point that it might be easier for you to just start over. Of course we won't give up on you should you decide not to.
