I see you have Vista Home Basic but even at that I consider 512mb too little. It meets the minimum but I usually figure you need twice the minimum.

Printer headache from Vista or HP?
RandyL replied to anjoed's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Have you checked to see if you have the latest software and drivers? The above is for Vista 32 bit. -
Hi and welcome. Please do share your knowledge here.

I can think of two things to try. 1. Navigate to where the program is installed and right click the application, click properties, and try changing the icon from a list. 2. Try repairing Office by going to add/remove programs. Click uninstall and you should see an option to repair or uninstall. Like chiaz said not all sites with video players or flash players can be trusted like youtube. If you don't know the site don't install the player. If a site uses an ordinary flash player just make sure you are using the latest version of flash. But consider this. Some sites will try to trick you. For instance it might say you need flashplayer or a newer version to view the video. Never ever click on a link or click OK to install it. Always go to the flashplayer site and get it from there. Many times they trick you to install malware by doing this. Even if you have the latest version you will get such a message. Donations are used to defray some of the costs of FPCH as stated in the link provided by chiaz. All staff members are volunteers and receive nothing. We simply offer our time for free in order to provide help.

Hi daranth. Since you think the fault is with something you changed and it's only been "about a week" perhaps doing a System Restore to a time before that might fix it.
-
That's true. I didn't think of that.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here but this may be futile. If I'm not mistaken you got a new 1Gb stick that according to crucial is the right one and fully supported by your mobo. Your old one was not even supposed to be supported by your mobo but it did work by itself. Your new one works by itself. So your old stick which is not fully compatable with your mobo does not work in conjunction with a fully compatable stick. If both work by themselves but not with each other and the original does not appear to be compatable with the mobo then why bother? Stay with the new supported RAM. It's twice your original size. If you need more get the the right one. Although tinkering can work wonders in some cases we have a saying over here. You can't make a silk purse out of a cows ears. My point is as before. Would it not be best to use the supported memory? Just my thoughts.

It's hard to say but I'm inclined to think like Jelly Bean on this one for several reasons. Norton seem to take forever & stops everything else from working. Norton will now not open when double clicked & I have lost the little icon in the Windows tool bar. I tried to do a system restore. I can open the system restore page. click on a date to restore too. But when I click to go ahead & restore, nothing happens, I can go no further. Disc defragmenter won't start either. To me it sounds like malware has infected Explorer processes and your antivirus. Very typical. As Dalo said doing a system restore from safemode to before this problem happened might temporarily solve your issue. It's a good place to start. If you investigate you may find other processes disabled too if it's malware corruption. As to whether it's Norton or malware is hard to say without knowing more. It depends somewhat on what Norton products you have. What Norton do you have? Doing a system restore via other methods than safemode depends on exactly what computer you have or what disks you used to install XP. In this case since you can still boot into Windows I would post in the malware section as Jelly Bean suggested. Post all the relevant information there and link to this thread too. In case you need a direct link to this thread you can copy this. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/windows-2000-and-xp/8760-unable-system-restore.html

Problems with Win Explorer under Vista
RandyL replied to mungolina's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Are you sure Folders are displaying icons and not thumbnails. Thumbnail view will take longer to load if you have a lot in a folder. How much memory do you have? How long does it take to bootup and logon to Windows? -
It kind of sounds like the "Display a notification about every script error" is ticked in the Advanced options of the Internet Properties in IE. That can get quite annoying.

I'd leave those alone. None are toolbars.

Change ISP & Keep email address?
RandyL replied to Quacker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Quacker if you found what you needed then we're glad. If not just let us know. It's a great day when we search and figure it out is it not? Good to see you again. -
I have merged two threads on this matter as they are related. I sincerely hope that this does not cause too much confusion.

Computer acting on it's own accord
RandyL replied to muppet rebecca's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I see what chiaz means. You must have had combofix on external media such as a CD or external drive. Then you opened it and ran it from there. I think he needs you to put it on your C drive, it appears to have been run from your E drive. Post 8. Running from: E:\ComboFix.exe Copy ComboFix.exe to the C drive if that's the drive Windows is on. Then run ComboFix.exe from there. As for the recovery console the guide says that with an active internet connection combofix should download and install it if you don't already have it. bleepingcomputer and the guide they have on combofix is definitive. Just trying to help clarify chiaz. Carry on. -

Unable to encrypt/pwd protect folder/files in XP
RandyL replied to nil_datta75's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
You're welcome nil. Come back anytime. -
I don't see the enkedn entry but it might just be my old tired eyes. I don't read combofix logs so I don't pretend to know the structure but I do see references to Avast And Symantec. They might be leftovers but might I ask what antivirus you currently use? What really bothers me is that I'm concerned that no matter how this cleanup goes I think you run an extremely high risk of becoming reinfected. I see bittorrent, frostwire, limewire and bitcomet. If you still have these I highly suggest that you remove them now. P2P programs have caused more infections than I can count. chiaz and tom if I'm mistaken about these I apologize but I do have to mention it.

Unable to encrypt/pwd protect folder/files in XP
RandyL replied to nil_datta75's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi nil. Take a look at How do I password protect my files and folders in Windows? You'll notice in the "Microsoft Windows XP professional users" section that encryption is a function of XP Pro not XP Home. Your profile says you have XP Home. You can make the folder "Private" as outlined in the "Microsoft Windows XP home users" section or you can "Compress" the folder and "Password Protect" the compressed folder as outlined in the "Other security solutions for protecting your files and folders in Windows" section, subsection "Windows ME and Windows XP users". Third party programs are also available. Should you ever forget your password or in the case of third party programs you should for some reason not be able to access them we would not be able to help as password circumvention help is against our rules. There are other possible issues with encryption or third party programs and such so keeping a copy of the folders on a disk, usb stick or external drive is advised. -
And if you have any trouble with uninstalling and if you have one of the versions listed on this Kaspersky support page the removal tool might help.

ARGHHH! Fix this and I buy you a pint XD
RandyL replied to smirnoff's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Dalo Harkin would know. Please follow his advice. -
I understand what you mean. I wish I could tell you more but perhaps someone else can. All I know is that I only install and mix and match what I know works from what I read is supported. Yes I have installed FASTER memory knowing full well that it's limited to the slower speed of the other stick or the motherboard specs but in your case Crucial says the SLOWER stick is not supported. I can only guess that is the issue. If this is a built computer then the builder may have known the original would work by itself but that does not mean it's gauranteed to be supported with other RAM by the mobo. If this was a brand new name brand computer then I would contact the manufacturer on why they used what they did.

Hi dave. Do you have any HP hardware like a printer/scanner? What is your computer? Make/model/number?
